    • HAHAHAHAHA.

Sorry, that was rude. I 'won' a Jetta with 40k on the clock for just $4k less than VW's then promo price. My bid was refused. Auction prices are often way too high for what is essential worse than a private sale (no warranty, no test drive, often no rego).

I've been lucky at a smaller auction house, but I would highly recommend checking some of the winning bids against the prices on carsales at an auction to see if you are getting a good deal.

A few mechanics over the years have told us the same, the 2 top cars are Mazda and Toyota.
We bought a Mazda 3 and love it, been driving it since 2011 and it's never given us a problem.
Now our daughter wants a car and we are looking at Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, she doesn't want the same car as us so no Mazda.
She has driven an old daewoo lanos car since she got her license a few years back so time for something nice.
It leaks oil and the air con doesn't work, but bless, it has never let her down. (2000 model).
She only has about $12 000 saved so it won't be new, it will probably be 2 or 3 years old.
Does anyone have any suggestions???…..she has decided on an auto….oh and she wants a decent sized boot.

    • I have had a number of mechanics say the same about Mazda and Hyandai they're some of the best car on the market atm.
What are your daughter's needs in a car other than a reasonable boot? Small, big, city, freeway driving etc?
12 thousand is always an interesting price point in the market. You can either buy newer cars with more kms or older cars with low kms.
      Pros and cons for both.
I have have bought in this price point a couple times before so it's worth holding out and considering all of your options.
My advise would be to try and look at your needs and then decided on brand. Not the other way around othwrwise it will really limit your options.

      • Talking with a mecanic recently & he said what most are saying here… his top pick was Kia straight away, their current range is very good. He also said that most Kia parts are Hyundai as they own Kia now. Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Mazda… He was adamant that anything european should be avoided.

        • +1

Kia`s certainly look good, when I had an accident sheen panel service gave me a courtesy car a kia cerato. The car looks nice lots of extras but the engine sounded like it was dying or close to death especially when you start it in the morning and there was only 9k on the clock.

        • With Kia I personally recommend you don't get a manual.

      • Thank you.
Doesn't have to drive far to work so usually short trips.
Doesn't want anything bigger than a Mazda 3 size
        She likes a sporty look.
        Thoughts ?

        • For under 12 thousand 2011-12 models.
Generally less than 70 thousand km. Auto
Toyota yarris, Kia cerato, Hyandai i20, Mitsubishi colt, Suzuki Swift

Others such as Holden Barina or Ford Fiesta

Basically Yarris is very reliable but not sporty.
Cerato is more Toyota Corolla size so it has bigger boot and a bigger 2.0 litre engine.
I own an i30, it's great, I don't know about the i20 though. Mitsubishi colt big boot for a car of that size. Suzuki Swift great little car (smaller boot)
Fiesta is European like the focus, reasonable cars but parts and services generally expensive.
          Barina I haven't owned one so I wouldn't know.
Lastly although she doesn't want a Mazda, is Mazda 2.

    • honda civic. should be able to get a 2008 or newer.
It has a huge boot for the car size.
We had one, no problems at all except it started to be a bit small with our teen son being in the back and 6foot tall.

      • +1

She doesn't have a height problem, neither does her boyfriend lol.
Yes the civics have always had a good name.
        Thank you.

  • Roll a die , 1-2 =Holden, 3-4 = Hyundai, 5-6= Honda.

Some of the comments above, if not most, are obviously from people that are still riding bmx's??

Have you looked into owning a Honda Accord Euro? I've got an 06 luxury model (I'm 21) and it drives/looks like an absolute dream! I highly recommend Honda as a brand but just see if the Accord Euro is up your alley, the newer models (CU2 is the newer design) looks great and would pass as a business car or also a family car. Relatively cheap too if you buy second hand!

    • We will look at this one too. Thanks.

      • Keep us updated on what you choose to pick!

  • Yaris base model at 23500? You must be looking at a corolla auto

    • +1

Even Autos doesn`t cost that much maybe Corollas.

    Decided to go with ELANTRA.

I was in the States a few years ago, looking to rent a car. The only feasible option was an Elantra. As a (closet-bogan) Falcon driver, I was a bit concerned about having to drive this ugly (the atrocious looking early 2000s models burned into my brain) 4-cylinder (shock-horror!) up in the mountains of California in the winter. When they pulled the car around, it was the brand spanking new (at the time) 2011 model and I was shocked at how nice it looked. Nicer looking than a Hyundai has any right to be! I drove the car up to Big Bear, feeling like I had plenty of power getting down the the road. Then it started to snow - and it handled magnificently. Dodging sliding 4x4s left and right, the Elantra made it safely to a servo where we bought some chains. Seriously impressed. Definitely would buy one. I think you'll be very happy!

    • well done, saw one yesterday and they look pretty good.

just looked, base model $18990 drive away.

    • /thread :)

Enjoy! As I said earlier, only you know what you feel comfortable in and what you like to drive.

Those people that decide purely on a warranty length, or finance rate, or some other petty thing, just don't understand. It's those people that regret their decision 6 months later.

I would go for the i30 SE you can get it for $2100 in auto, (18700 manual) 5 year warranty increased to 7 if you use the capped price servicing. Also has free breakdown if you take it for the capped price servicing.

The Mazda 3 is better however lots more, I have an I30 and really like it, this comes from someone who used drive German cars for years

Go with Mazda 3 or Toyota Corolla, I recently got an Hyundai i20 for my partner and fuel consumption is awful 10.2lt per 100 k.m. my 2012 Corolla Ascent with bigger engine only use 7.2lt in comparison.

    • How? we have an automatic and the worst I have got is 8l/100km doing all short hilly runs with a cold engine, open road 4.7 flatish to 5.5 with a lot of hills.

    • my toyota aurion 2011 is 13.5 l/100km :'( .

      • i know how u feel especially advertised as 8.9l/100km

  • What, a base model Yaris is $23000 now! wow.

    • I probably got thet figure wrong.

  • +2

    Honda

  • -1

Hyundai every time. The quality of a Japanese car with a lower price. People who still think of Hyundais as being rubbish cars are thinking of Hyundai products of over a decade ago. Hyundai has moved on since then.

  • Which Yaris costs 23500? That's squarely in Corolla pricing range…

  • -4

Watch out, another bad Hyundai driver is on the road

  • -2

Try a VW polo! Great gearbox, solid construction, nice torque in lower gears, light and zippy with great handling. Fuel is dead cheap. Servicing is a bit pricier but it's once a year so it ends up pretty much the same but with better oil

  • -1

The order would be Hyundai, Honda, Holden

  • +1

I see you've chosen but I'll write this anyway in case it's of interest to anyone. I have heard a lot of bad things about the Holden Cruze, but I have driven one and it was so pleasant to drive! Really smooth. Enjoyed it more than others - i30, Polo, Corolla, Fiesta, Civic, Jazz, Yaris & Octavia.

I also liked the i30, Corolla and Fiesta.

  • +1

there's a lot of misiformation in this thread.
As someone who's worked in the auto industry both selling cars, selling car finance and insurances for over 10 years, I would recommend the Kia or Hyundai (almost identical except for warranties) and then the Honda.

Stay away from the Cruze, to be blunt it's a shitbox.

I'd look at the Kia Rio and Cerato, and the Hyundai i30 and Elantra.
Find the cheapest one you can get with service history and you can't go wrong.
If you can find a really cheap demo Kia then the 7 year warranty should have at least 6.5 years left on it.

My daughter will be getting a Kia Rio for her 18th birthday, or a Cerato if she wants to put a bit of extra $$$ in. Simply fantastic value cars that are incredibly cheap to run and very solid mechanically.

Anyone who begs to differ can try and argue with me, but I work with EVERY brand of vehicle and get monthly reports on insurance claims and which cars cost our company the most in repairs/mechanical failures.

    • Hi, given your experience it would be great to ask. I am also about to buy a new car (my first) and am eyeing the Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport Hatch as it is on sale to 23990. What are your thoughts?

      • +2

the Corolla's are pretty good. Toyota's aren't as reliable or as cheap to run as they used to be but I would definitely drive one.
The good thing with Corolla's (much like Mazda) is that they have a reputation from 10 years ago and thus have great resale value.
You really can't go wrong with a Toyota, Hyundai, Kia or Mazda.
You should also be able to get the price down from $23990 to about $22,000 drive away without too much hard bargaining (or close to it). That's just an informed guess and the discount may be less than that but it's worth a crack.

The way 'sales' work in the auto industry, and in the case of Toyota too, is that the manufacturer will give dealers a rebate for every Ascent Sport Hatch they sell.
So if the price is normally $25,990 and it's been reduced to $23,990 then they'll split the $2000 difference with the dealership (in most cases), so the dealership should have between an extra $500 to $1500 to play with.

I'd also wait till the last few days of the month.
If you're financing, make sure you haggle hard and find out what fees are involved.
The finance guy's job is to make you comfortable with a weekly payment which can sometimes trap people into paying more than they should, but they often won't give you concrete figures for fear of being shopped around and losing your business. Only when you commit to buy at a certain rate/deal will they divulge the final amount.

Also check out the Kia Cerato Si and SLi if you like the Corolla. The i30 is a brilliant car like the Cerato too. But yeah the Corolla is a great car and if you like the styling/drive comfort then you can't go wrong, it will probably have a slightly higher re-sale value after 5 years as well, simply because it's a Toyota. (Maybe an extra 3-5% more than other makes.)

The Mazda 3 surprises me because they are a great looking car, but the ride and handling (in my opinion), just isn't that great compared to other makes. Mazda have got a brilliant marketing campaign and focus on quality finishes in the interior that the general public just seem to love- their cars are very good for capturing customers during a test drive.

I know the owner family of one of the biggest Mazda dealerships in Melbourne and it is literally a licence to print money haha.

Any more questions feel free to ask.

        • Thank you. I have decided to go with the toyota (http://www.toyota.com.au/corolla/offers/2015-APR-03/4002)
However, i am gonna take your advice and try to haggle, even if i cant bring the price down, maybe i can get xtras for free.

Also, as to the finance, i am considering a secured car loan with either st george or ANZ as they have the best interedt rates and fees that i can find. Once again, im gonna listen amd wait until the very end of june to go, as they may be more willing.

          Thanks so much

          @blakeclayton12:

no worries, make sure you get at the very least included : Tint, floor mats and about $1000 off whatever the sticker price is. Just offer them a deal and remember whatever deal you ask for, they will try and bargain with you to get the price up a bit more, so be firm. Just tell them you like the sales person and don't want to go somewhere else (another Toyota dealer) to shop around, just doing your diligence. As soon as they hear you 'threaten' to shop around they'll be all yours.. With the finance, just make sure you talk to People's choice credit union as well or a local finance company because it could save you $100's over the term. Good luck and have fun!

    • So could you please answer the following for me….
If we manage to buy a car with some warranty left, is it compulsory to have it serviced with the dealer?
Been there done that, way over the top expensive and so we now take ours to a great local mechanic.

So once our daughter decides on a car, can she service at our mechanics?

And for around $12 000 cash she could get a what year model Kia, Hyundai or Honda auto do you think ??
      Many thanks.

      • +1

Why dont you make a new thread, instead of hijacking this one?

      • Hi, I'll reply properly later, in short you don't need to take it to the dealer unless it's a dealer warranty (dealer warranties are trash). For 12k you could get a nice 2 year old auto Rio With around 3 years warranty Left on it. If you can get an extended warranty from Swann insurance or Allianz, those are the best extended warranties that money can buy, and the dealers usually makkeep about 30 to 40% profit on them at full price….

  • Echoing a few other people in this thread, Kia is my personal choice.

  • I got the Elantra Trophy for $21k.
    Great interior and leather seats.

But not as powerful uphill as my old Honda Civic $25k.

    • When was this ?

      • December. It was 2015 model.
I called Liverpool up and said I got a price from another dealer for $21500. Can you beat it?
They had stock so they could beat it.

        • But isn't the Trophy now the SE model?
As far as I can tell from the Hyundai website, the 'Trophy' name is no longer used.
I think their current Elantra lineup is: Active < SE < Elite < Premium

        • @muncan: Trophy is once limited edition.
          Not available anymore.

        • @congngo: That's what I thought, so not the 2015 model?

        • @muncan: Sorry, I think it is 2014 model.

I would never recommend anyone buy a new car, if you've ever had one, you'll also know that they also develop problems, sometimes several visits to the manufacturer for warranty repairs, its such a pain in the ass. I would rather suggest you to buy a used car that is in a new-ish condition and save yourself atleast 5k off the price.

  • All my cars (8) and bikes (3) have been 2nd hand. Had mixed luck, but only 2 lemons. Bought my first new car two weeks ago. Kia Cerato sedan. Auto with metallic 19,990. Attracted to 7 year warranty. Car drives well and is very roomy for its size. Good size boot as well. If I wish to sell after 5 years, the car will still have 2 years warranty.

  • +1

Honda. Without hesitation or doubt. Nissan would have been my second choice. Not sure why you canned it.
