You do need a special connection. It's called an iRig, which you can buy cheap off ebay I think.

If you have a USB camera adapter/30pin or USB lightning camera adapter you could buy a cheap audio interface and connect it up or if you have a compatible USB mixer you could go that way.
Cheapest option would be the iRig available for ~$12 on ebay which is passive and connects to the headphone jack
To get the best quality you need something that utilises the dock/lightning port like the Apogee Jam which is $144 on ebay

My major gripe with this app is that it continuosly reminds you that you dont have all the effects and amps and asks if youvwant to buy them. Even when you buy the packages and they say full package you will still get a message because you are missing an effect e.g some kind of reverb. I still use it but it is anoying and a bit decitful. I did complain to apple about that issue of non- disclosure and i was given a full refund.
Its a very greedy app that gives close to nothing if you do not purchase amps and effects. I like JamUp Pro much better. Sounds better to my liking. IRig works on it as well
No need to buy original iRig. The copy one works just fine.
