Mattress Buying Advice - Sealy vs OzMattress vs Sleeping Duck

Hello All,

We wake up everyday morning with body pain and decided it is time to get a new mattress. After a lot of research, we finally shortlisted the following three mattresses:

Sealy Crown Jewel Camelot
Pros:
Tried it in Myer and feels good
Well known brand
Cons:
Very expensive
Not so great reviews

OzMattress Grandmaster
Pros:
Great reviews
Cons:
There is no way to try it and no refund if I am not happy with the product

Sleepingduck Titan
Pros:
Full refund if you are not happy with the product
Cheapest Option

Cons:
Some bad reviews compared to OzMattress

My preference is Sealy Crown Jewel. However, there are mixed reviews about Sealy in the review forums and it is really difficult to understand whether they are talking about the same product or not. Also, a friend told us not to get plush model because it will get saggy in no time. Anyone advice or recommendation would be highly appreciated

Sealy are great and Myer are very good with sales, delivery, and returns. Wait until there's a sale! Mattresses are nearly as difficult as jeans to decide upon :) The full refund option of Sleepingduck is tempting, but see if Sealy will provide similar. They used to do a deal where you could swap to a different mattress up to 3 times if unhappy with your first one after a month.

Yes, plush do get saggy - but it's a good workout to flip a mattress regularly ;)

In another life, I worked in the furniture department at Myer, and it was one of the best jobs I've had. I have no hesitation in recommending Sealy - it was always a pleasure dealing with their reps and there were never any hassles with delivery, or customer complaints, etc.

    • Thank you for the suggestion. The guy in Myer was really nice and he offered around 45% discount. He said that is close to boxing day prices and Queen mattresses usually don't go to 50% off. I am not sure whether he was telling the truth or not; but the price he gave me was a little less than $3300. It is way too much money for us to spend, but better than waking up sore everyday morning

    • We live in almost a glass box and it gets really hot in summer. So latex is not our first choice

      • pin-cored 100% pure latex is not necessarily any hotter than springs - have you tried lying on one?

  • Zaanta is having an EOFYS sale on current stock mattresses:

  • Dunlopillo Latex vote here as well. Get them on special and still around the price of the expensive one but so so worth it. My missus complains when it is over 25 degrees that it is too hot but has no complaints sleeping on this.

  • Curious as to the bad reviews you found for the Sleeping Duck?
I've been mattress shopping the last few weeks and I can't find any real negative reviews on the SD Titan.

Otherwise I found the Madison Grosvenor at Snooze to be very comfortable, and had all the right features.

    • Can't remember where. But the reviews were mostly favouring the ozmattress over sleepingduck. People were saying that a good mattress cannot be compressed like the way they do with sleepingduck. It is possible that there are more reviews for ozmattress because sleepingduck is a relatively new company

Personally, I will never buy from Snooze and their home brand mattresses (not sure about the brand that you are referring to). Bought my last mattress from there; it wasn't cheap and after a year and half, it felt like I was sleeping in a hammock. I had to call them several times to get some customer service and finally they took the mattress and did something. But from my point of view, nothing changed and I still feel miserable everyday morning after sleeping in this.

      • Yeah I read that Whirlpool post, but I don't put much faith in people slagging a product without actually trying it. Amazon have a few mattresses that come in a similar vacuum packed bag like the SD but haven't seen an issue yet due to the vacuum process.

The short time they have been around is a bit of a concern, a 10 year warranty isn't much good if a company only lasts for another year.

        • For me the issue with mattress in box (Sleeping Duck, Koala etc) is they can't have proper edge support, edging wire i heavy gauge and cannot be folded or bent to fit in a box.

        • @jg86tsv: IDK, I ended up buying the SD and its edge support is far far better than my old mattress (though that one had terrible edge support so it's hard to gauge)

  • i think waht suits you best is the best for you. opinoins from people to people, you need tp try it yourself. hope it helps.

  • Hi, did you end up buying any of the mattress you've listed? i would be keen to get feedback as i am also looking to purchase one.
Was looking at the sleeping duck titan and Ozmattress Grandmaster.

Went to Snooze and was looking at the Slumberland Devon mattress which seems comparable to the Sleeping Duck one. The Snooze salesperson was keen for me to upgrade to the Madison range which apparently is the "best selling" range (and of course the more expensive).

The thing that concerns me buying online is the 10 year warranty issue as noted in previous post. no use having 10 year warranty if the company doesn't exist in a few years.

  • I would recommend SleepMaker mattresses. Had one in a rented studio, slept well then bought a Queen sized when we moved to our own apartment.

  • Also in the market for a mattress.
Considering the 100% in 100 days return policy of SD, might give it a go before the others.

  • What was the outcome of all your research and trials crappyme?
I'm weighting up almost the exact same options but tending towards sleeping duck.
I need a king size so it's a big$ purchase and want to get it right.

  • Bump… anyone tried the SD Titan that they can report on?

    • I ended up buying the SD Titan. Went with the Firm, and opted to swap for a medium after a month. Overall very happy with both the mattress and the service from SD.
They now have a demo room in Melbourne where you can try before you buy, but with the 100 day return I wasn't too concerned.
