Help with Mattress Purchase

Hello OzBargainers,

We are currently in the need of buying a new queen size mattress and have visited few stores over last couple of weeks. Have read few posts here and like lot of other people we are bit confused too.

We visited Snooze and tried their BedMatch system and according to our body weights (80kg for me and 60kg for wife) and sleeping patterns, their report suggested we should go for Medium feel mattress. According to little research I've done, we also think that we should buy a pocket spring mattress with at least 5 zones. Our budget is around $1000-$1300. Below are the 2 we have shortlisted so far from the few shops we have visited –

1 Snooze
Slumberland Devon – http://www.snooze.com.au/Mattresses-Bases/92078/Slumberland-…
Medium feel with memory foam pillowtop
RRP $1699 – Currently on sale for $1189 (30% discount)

2 Bedshed
Insignia Luxuria Ultimate – http://www.bedshed.com.au/mattresses-and-ensembles/insignia/…
Plush feel with gel infused memory foam + latex pillowtop
RRP $2499 – Currently on sale for $1249 (50% discount)
Even though this one is Plush on paper, it feels more like medium and even the salesperson mentioned that this one is more towards medium feel.

Being an ozbargainer, I have a tendency to look at the higher discount and thus have been inclined towards the mattress from bedshed thinking if it retails for $2499 against Slumberland $1699, it has to be better of those two. But I could be wrong.

Anyone has any experience/feedback regarding above 2 mattresses? Please also let me know if anyone has any long term experience using pocket spring mattresses.

Also any other suggestions on looking at somewhere else for better option?

Sorry for the long post guys.

Thank you

  • Have a look at this thread from last week. There are a few recommendations there.

  • ozmattress.com.au is my tip
Latex may be 'best' for some but when I tried it it resulted in being much too hot.. Generally latex mattresses are 'hotter' sleeping that regular mattresses

    • 'hot' latex mattresses are those that aren't pin-cored 100% pure latex - any synthetics such as foam retain heat :(

So glad I saw this- for you.

Be very sure to read/get the terms on if you are not satisfied with your mattress.

I bought a single for my son from Betta Beds in Mandurah. It was for his b'day. Within a few months, it had a huge cave-in. In this time, my son was overseas for about 90% of that time. However, I had put black sheets on the mattress.

When I stopped in to ask about the cave-in, the rep in-store gave me a form to fill out.

Essentially- you have about a 1% chance of restitution. Their form even states: most people apply for things we don't cover!!!!!!!

    1) if the crew they send to look thinks the mattress has "stains"- they charge you. With the black sheets, the surface went dark within the few weeks he slept on it.

    2) the form said, "if the mattress has dips- that's expected"(sic).

I'll never deal with Betta Beds again nor will I deal with Slumbercare for writing a BS, "we cover nothing" policy.

Hi, definitely go for a AH Beard, Sealy or sleepmaker. We have purchased an AH Beard domino imperial plush mattress for $1300 and couldn't be happier. It has pocket springs which are great to reduce disturbance when moving. We bought a mattress from the sleep doctor about 2 years ago and hated it, they sell their own brand and are made in China. AH Beard are made here but not sure about the others, would definitely recommend them and they have a few brands like domino etc. We are 90 & 70kg and went for a plush, it has plenty of support and a great soft pillow top, it's like sleeping on a cloud.

    Good luck,
    David.

  • We recently purchased a bed and did quite a bit of research. After much testing I had determined that a multi-zone pocket spring bed with a latex cover offered the best performance in terms of comfort, price and minimal partner disturbance.

I agree with noddypiper that AH Beard's Domino range seem to have a great mix of price and features. I found the Sleepmaker mattresses to be comfortable but poor in terms of partner disturbance.

We like a firm mattress and almost purchased the Domino Privilege Firm from The Sleeping Giant but in the end went for the ComfortSleep Posture Indulgence Firm from BedWorks. Both of these mattresses are available in medium or soft and should fit your budget.

If you do go for a mattress from Snooze you receive a 15% discount on full-priced items if you show your NRMA membership card (probably same with other auto associations in other states), or 5% discount on sale items.

  • I chose the second hardest mattress I could find (a concrete slab just isn't comfortable;) based on my sister claiming that hotel chains only use firm mattresses because they last longer - and I've always found I like sleeping on hotel beds.

  • We walked into a local place and said "Show us the hardest mattresses you've got". He showed us two, the second of which he called "The Brick".
    And we love our Brick.

My advice is, disregard the higher percentage discount and go with what you're both most comfortable with. In a few years time, the price will be forgotten anyway.

  • Thank you all for your suggestions and valuable inputs… Much appreciated…

  • From Choice magazine.

    "Changed your mind?

Despite your best efforts testing a mattress in the shop, it may not be until you’ve slept on it overnight — or even for several weeks — that you discover whether or not you’re really satisfied with it.

We recommend you choose a retailer who gives you the option of returning or exchanging a mattress you’re not happy with. Conditions vary from store to store, so check before you buy. You might be charged for re-covering the mattress (for hygiene reasons - which could be considered a plus if you don't like the idea of buying a 'second hand' mattress yourself!) and return delivery costs. Check whether you can get a refund, or are only entitled to exchange the mattress for one of equal or greater value.

Returns can cost retailers — they may have to sell the mattress at a discounted price even if it’s been cleaned and/or re-covered — so a good retailer knows it’s in their interests to help you get it right first time around."

  • Don't buy Slumberland. I have got one less than three years ago and for the past year and half we are living with body pain every morning.
