Grey importing is just importing items directly from somewhere other than the official local distributor. Just like everything else, GST must be paid on these items.
GST must be paid on these items.
Tell that to Kogan
If a company is avoiding GST like you seem to be saying, they wouldn't last long before being caught.
I find it hard to believe that a highly visible company like Kogan could be failing to pay GST on their imported goods. Why do you think they are? You must also think that their customs agents are party to the crime.
@pjetson:
um. yes and no, if its a overseas company selling grey imports , have fun making them pay gst, if its a aus branch selling grey imports then u are right.but nonetheless grey imports are not generally price matched as they dont come with local warranty.
if its a overseas company selling grey imports
If it's an overseas company selling to an Australian, then the overseas company obviously does not need to pay GST.
And since the buyer is the importer, the overseas company is obviously not selling grey imports.
I'm afraid that I don't understand your point.
Tell that to Kogan
I think I see what you're alluding to now - that Kogan are apparently shipping some items directly from Hong Kong and stipulating that the buyer, not Kogan Australia, is the importer.
It appears that this arrangement allows the sale to be GST free, but I don't know why the ATO and government would allow such a scheme to continue.
jb? hopeless.. they will say "below our cost" yeah right….
You'd have to be lucky for any store to price-match grey import products, moreso JB Hifi, which doesn't even have a price-matching policy.
JB won't price match online only retailers. They only match with large bricks and mortar store.
Officeworks has it for $277 no, official sony store had a 30% off one night only sale of the full price of it as well
First of all, I don't think has a price match policy like officework. I think the salesmen do it because they want the sales, but JB don't advertise nor has a policy on price matching as far as I know. So as far as I know, they are doing something that they don't need to do when they price match.
Secondly, even with OfficeWork who have a price beat policy, they usually refuse price matching a grey import (and I think that's in the policy), since grey imports don't face GST etc etc.
