can’t say they are the world’s greatest maps, but they do pretty well, and they are free for the next day or so. If you travel anywhere that would require data roaming fees to access the online map functions of your iPhone, it might be worth checking out.

That allows you to save map of an area of a named place, but what about a route, say from home to that place?
It is really limited, not really useful as normal off-line maps.
Wrong. Gmaps is very useful and something I have switched to after being very frustrated with maps 2 go. This app is only good for street names, half of which don't actually appear, only major roads. It lists a few locations but only big hotels and restaurants, not a whole lot of them.
When I was recently in Sri Lanka I got frustrated with how horrible Maps2Go were because they never could find the street my guest house was on let alone the actual guest house itself.
I started downloading Gmaps to use offline which is something you can do daily as you move around a country because wifi is everywhere now. If you save them at maximum zoom you can zoom into them in offline mode and you get names of every street and a lot more information regarding businesses in the area.
I used both gmaps and maps2go in parallel as I didn't want to get stranded by gmaps but after a couple weeks I have total faith in gmaps and removed this app from my phone.
There is no comparison for me, gmaps offline trumps this app.
i didnt mean maps2go was good, i meant google maps offline is not great, like you say you need to download parts of maps. Nokia Here has countries of maps offline, no wifi needed at all.

I used Here Maps (from Nokia) in South America and found it to be excellent. You can download an entire continents (or countries) at a time.
It's free.
Looks good. Just a shame I can't find any listing of what cities are available using this app before installing. Even though I found a review somewhere that claimed 7000+ cities in the database.
so far so good in most countries i've visited in south east asia.
even the free version is pretty good. What about Nokia's here maps. They are free. Available for android, I assume it's too.
Does this do gps routes offline? I am looking for gps capabilities without roaming data fees.
The Nokia one (see the posts above) does.
A sidenote, Google Maps actually has a function to store offline maps now: https://support.google.com/gmm/answer/3273567?hl=en
