Closer to Nature Formula Preparation Machine @ Target (Was $229 Now $79.20 in Store Only)

140

Having had twins recently, we were looking for something that would make our life slightly easier given the number of bottles we have to prepare everyday.

We came across this machine after someone recommended and reading good reviews.

It's apparently being discontinued hence the huge price drop.

It's not available online but I checked with Target and they told me there was still in stock at Hornsby, Carlingford and Castle Hill stores. It's worth pinging them in Facebook via private Message to confirm if it's available in other stores.

Breast is always best, but unfortunately wife is about to start chemo and not weaning is not a choice.

Thanks for the post, these things are great, our baby girl is allergic to dairy and egg along with other things. We had to use Soy ones and these machines made it a lot easier

Well formula isn't crap and it isn't just chemicals. If you say formula is chemicals, then "Technically" breast milk is also chemicals, as it contains similar ingredients to formula.

Obviously though, it is a imitation product which tries to mimic the original. Similar to a Grand Piano and a Digital Piano, it can become close but will never become the original thing.

Sadly quite a few mothers don't have the luxury to fully breastfeed for various reasons. Which means they often mix in some formula or use formula completely. I do frown at parents who say "breastfeeding is the best" and then they only do that EVEN if they don't have enough milk they don't realize that they are potentially starving and stunting the baby's brain growth.

By spreading comments like "its chemicals and crap", that is simply untrue and advocate those parents who rather starve their children because they don't have enough breast milk.

    Great find OP, thanks.

I know people who aren't able to breast feed… And self righteous preachers make them feel guilty and worthless.

    Touchy topic, so tread lightly.

    • +3

Yup, people to their own opinions. However it is very ironic when i see a mother saying "i won't feed my children formula because it is crap" then you see them munching on a bag of chips. LOL!

    • +4

Agreed, beware the midwife militia. Formula is not 'chemicals and crap'. it's actually soy/cow milk, fortified with additional nutrients. So many reasons why formula might be required.
      1. Production hasn't kicked in yet, and colostrum don't cut it.
      2. Production isn't enough, so they are complementary
      3. Production has stopped, and cow's milk don't cut it (not fortified)
      4. Mum isn't around.
      etc etc.

  • Great find! This would have saved me so much time with baby #1!

Urrh… This is just a measured hot water dispenser! Where is the machine that measures and dispenses the formula?!
That part is harder than boiling and pouring water.

And where's the machine that takes the bottles apart and cleans them properly?

Unless someone has actually used one of these, I call gimmick.

  • +7

I didn't mean to offend anyone, I just meant that if you can breastfeed enough on it's own do that, if you can't for whatever reason, then for sure you use the next best thing - formula. :) Sorry if I caused people offense.

  • Aren't you supposed to boil the water for a couple of minutes? If so, how does this machine boil and cool down the liquid so quickly?

Also, wouldn't the 'hot shot', be bad for some nutrients and proteins in the formula?

I'm just wondering if what I know is old wives tales…

    • Their FAQ says the filter does the job http://www.closertonaturebaby.com.au/product/perfect-prep-ma…

And the "hot shot" is just into the empty bottle.

      • +2

        Wrong about the hot shot.

        Copied from the website:
"An initial hot shot big enough to dilute the formula"

Also the description implies the same:
Initial 'hot shot' of water kills bacteria that may be present in formula

I don't think there is any definitive answer on if the hot water kills the nutrients. There has been proof that some nutrients can be killed by hot water, but no proof in regards to the nutrients in baby formula.

Seems like even the Australian Government confirms the "hot shot" technique:
        http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pag…

Just need to think of it this way:
        1. Alittle less nutrients
        2. Potentially deadly bateria

Which one would you opt for?

Having had kids, I don't really see how this will save much effort. Not worth adding to the already-excessive kitchen clutter which only gets worse when you have a baby.

As damion said, its just a hot water dispenser. Got any nappy-changing machines?

A good husband with a stop watch.

      • Ooh - a challenge. Give us your best time!

  • My wife had a thermos flask with boiled hot water ready for making formula when needed. It cut down the time to make a bottle of formula greatly. Keep room temperature boiled water handy to temper if the thermos water is still too hot. Yard bottles into the dish washer and sterilize in a microwave sterilizer.

To the OP, congratulations on your new arrivals and best wishes to mum for her chemo.

    • We just use room temperature boiled water to make the formula when our little one needs a top-up.

    • You don't need to sterilise bottles (unless on specific medical advice) - thats old-school.
Just clean the bottles and sterilise the water (boil it) in the early months. (What do they advise now? 6 months? )

  • Does this fit different sized bottles? I have not read about what this product does but does it just boil water or does it have formula and makes complete bottles for bubs.

    • It has an adjustable holder that allows you to fit the height of the bottle. Regarding to the size of the bottleneck, there is no restriction.
