same old warning, 1G ram version Windows 8 tablet can only manage Windows Store (Metro/Modern) apps, it will struggle with desktop SOFTWARE that requires a lot more memory.

    • and desktop office apps of course!

+1 In addition, 2GB is also not enough. From experience, I have a Windows 8 Dell tablet & 2GB RAM is SLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW. Need at least 4GB or higher RAM to run.

      • I frankly see these more as a netbook. They wouldn't have enough processing power, since well, RAM, CPU and the storage (eMMc not SSD, since Atom CPU don't support SSD).

It all depends on what you want to use it for.

If you are in a market for a light tablet, and want to have something that can run office, Windows tablet can be an answer (though lack of apps do make Windows tablet less appealing to Android or iOS alternatives). Android doesn't offer that full office experience that Windows offer, I've tried so much.

I for example, would like to get the new Surface 3 when it comes down to a reasonable price, since I do need a netbook type of laptop and Surface 3 do look promising in that regards (except the price, damn currency rate and MS pricing on recently released goods).

        • What would someone use this for apart from Office?

        • @tomkun01: You can open up and use office on it, though I'd not do a serious work on it (i.e. I would probably use my desktop for it). I've seen people using words and excel and editing on these tablets.

When I said enough processing power, what I really meant was, enough to do some serious work. Like editing while running multiple programs and stuff.

        • @AznMitch: Sorry. I meant to ask, what could this be good for, apart from office? I'd imagine that it'd be ok for retro gaming. Maybe good enough for YouTube or ebooks if the screen isn't too terrible?

        • +1

@tomkun01: Probably, though the app selection on Windows is awful at best. I think the easiest way to look at these is a netbook in smaller form factor and work from there. Don't know what would people want to do with this, but it's a full Windows environment in a tablet form (no matter how crippled it is due to the spec). There will be some use for it for some.

      • I recently bought a T100 Chi, it only has 2gb ram and I'm finding it rather useful anyway. Sure it does get a little slow but it is not 10 O's worth of slow. Maybe 3 O's but that's only when it gets slow. The thing is, you should not be expecting desktop performance.

It even works great with photoshop albeit CS2.

As for the Surface 3, i figured the 4gb ram version plus the stylus and the keyboard will cost quite a fair bit. Hence I got the T100 Chi. Working great so far, it even runs Guild Wars 2 and Dota at a playable rate.

        • I'd probably go with rumoured 32GB version with 2GB ram if it becomes available for students. I'd probably use it for nothing more than note taking and PDF reading. Surface 3 right now is too expensive for what it is, I'd wait around few months until MS starts taking the price down.

Also, kudos to you for counting the o's. I was like, what does he mean by the o's for sec.

        • @AznMitch:
Yeah Surface 3 isn't a deal. It's just a cheaper option which is cheaper simply because you're getting less. When it was first leaked I was so impressed but then came the price announcement and it was just a nope. Yeah 2gb ram really is the minimum if you're expecting to use full fledged windows software.

Apparently the RRP for the 2gb version is $699 but let's face it, if you have the choice you'll go for the 4gb version which will run for $899. This is excluding the keyboard and stylus.

        • @lamerthanlam: MS always have gone with high pricing that gradually declines to a reasonable level during the transition from one generation to another. Not to mention, some of the high price is due to the currency rate (which we'd have to get used to ). I've grabbed SP1 when it became $700, which I would say was an amazing deal back then.

I'd personally wait til MS reduces the price down. Til then it's stuck between SP3 and Baytrail Tablets.

Also, as much as I see, 2GB is more of the minimum then 4GB, if you are looking for light usage. As long as you don't try to use it as your main PC/laptop, this is. Though this is simply my opinion. I think Windows 8.1 did optimise fairly well for the low end tablets, as long as you limit the multitasking to a reasonable level, I don't see 2GB being too much of a problem. Obviously I'd go for 4GB over 2GB if I were given a choice, but if I have limited budget, 2GB wouldn't be off my list at least.

Though, I wouldn't recommend 2GB to people who tend to forget the fact that RAM can be an issue and open gazillion tabs with multiple start up programs.

        • @AznMitch: Oh yes. Surfaces generally tend to get a drop in price but only when the next generation is imminent. This means a wait of another year, so it depends on your need.

Yeah 2gb of ram works fine. Its not that big of a limiting factor. With power point and word open at the same time along with 8 tabs in firefox, I have no issues. Most people just open heaps of tabs (and they have heaps of browser addons) and complain about the 2gb ram issue.

        • @lamerthanlam: True, but I think the device itself is alright. If I were to choose a second laptop/tablet without worrying about price, I think Surface 3 would be the winner.

I frankly don't think the price don't look too bad when you compare it to iPads and Note tablets by Samsung. It's just that those devices are fairly expensive to begin with and with decline in price for Surface Pro 3, I think it's just too close to current SP3 price .

  • Can it run Linux? Eg xubuntu works ok in 1gb.

  • Any HDMI out?

    • Nope, updated the deal to reflect that as well (I thought I had everything on the list, sorry).

    • i think the brand with HDMI is Toshiba
but its wifi chipset has serious issues and they never fix it since launch, render the device almost useless

mine is now a windows 10 test system
