wife thinks she needs a fitbit. i googled and read positive reviews on vivofit.

I would highly recommend you to research different brands to make sure it suits you.
Research differences between Jawbone, Fitbit, Garmin, Shine, Withings, Sony.
All of them have their pitfalls in one area or another.
If she thinks she needs a fitbit, then it is probably wise to get her a fitbit. She knows BEST as to what she wants, if you get her something else even if it is the same, they always think it is inferior and will not be happy with it.
Its similar to your wife tells you she wants a Chanel or LV bag and you go to Oroton and buy a bag for her saying "It does EXACTLY the same thing!"
BTW, If you are thinking of Fitbit Flex, check out JB Hifi, they sometimes have damaged packaging ones which is half price, thats where I got my wife one before. It works perfectly and still covered under warranty if anything goes wrong. Got one for $50
