Quoted $500 to beat out a 25cm round dent on my Honda Jazz. Is that good?

Hi,

I have a 25cm dent on my boot of my car. (The wall came out from no where). Lol.

It shattered the glass, which now been replaced. I took it to a panel beater and they quoted me $500 to get it done. Apparently it cost so much because where the dent is, they will need to take the glass out which cost around $100. 😕, and they will respray the back. It sounds a little steep! Does it sound right to you guys? One other panel beater told me it will cost ~$1000!!!!!!

It needs to be done so I just have to take it on the chin. It's a reputable company and they verbally quoted me $500. Do I need a written quote? I mean the guy did stare at it for few minutes before he just come up with a number.

Cheers

$500 doesn't seem too steep.. panel work is always costly. Ask if he can do a cash price, if that isn't already one.

There really will be a wide variability in quotes becuase there is a wide variability in the scope of the work that a panel beater will do. IMHO, your $500 quote for a 25cm dent is on the low side. A really good panel beater will remove everything that needs removing and then fix the panel and then - this is where the costs spiral - will respray and refinish a LARGE portion of your boot. Depending on where the damage is, they might have to redo the entire boot and then some. The reason being is that they will have to blend the paint with your existing paint. Otherwise, if they don't that, it'll look fixed but a good eye will instantly be able to tell where the new paint job starts and ends. Now if that sort of thing doesn't bother you, you can definitely go for the cheaper quote.

Just to share, I've got a dent that looks like it came from a shopping trolley. It's smaller than a $.50c piece on the rear passenger door panel. Unfortunately, to do it right in the sense that it will be virtually undetectable, it'll cost a little less than $1100. :(

Also, metallic paints and dark colours (like black! grrrr) will be harder to blend, necessitating painting all the way to the edges of natural breaks in the car (panels, pillars, etc.) Flat, light colours will be far easier to get away with just a minimum of blending.

    Good luck!

    • You got ripped off badly if it cost you $1100 to remove a 50c dent.
Usually if its that size of a dent , a good PDR place will charge $120 MAX.
Unless you needed to have that panel resprayed/bogged, then going down the PDR route is more cost effective, and it is undetectable when selling the car. When you start bogging, repainting stuff, it is ALWAYS detectable when selling - with a paint depth meter.
How do I know this? I am a panel beater by trade.

      • I haven't gotten it done because I didn't have that much coin to spare. Lol. The PDR guy gave up on it. I am however going to ask some other PDRs. I'm not fussed too much about the light scratch, to be honest. It's the dent that's getting my goat.

        • if the paint is missing, then PDR cannot fix that.
but if it is just a dent, no paint damage, then going PDR is the way to go

        • Yeah, jaykay. The first fellow did say that the paint was intact. He just didn't want to risk pulling it up with something that might have been called a sliding sledgehammer. (I'm a bit hazy on that one)

Nice bloke. He didn't even charge me even though he made the dent very slightly less noticeable.

        • @tebbybabes:

If you want to save money I would recommend you pdr it and then touch up any paint chips left over using a paint pen or brush.
If the paint damage is big then you can't do this method

        • @jaykay:

Thanks for the advice. I am sorta looking into taking this route. I'll ask around for some other PDR fellahs.

          Cheers

      • That's a 25cm dent not 25mm. Bit bigger than a 50c piece.

      • @jay kay

Just wondering how much does a "Paint depth meter" cost? and where can you buy one from?

If the dent is not kinked/creased and the paint is in good condition, try a paintless dent removal company e.g. SDR Paintless Dent Removal

I have used a paintless dent removal company in Sydney (obviously a different company to the one above) and was impressed with the result. From memory the cost was about $325; I do not think it is not based on size of the dent, but time and effort to fix it.

save the $500 bucks and think of it as character…

  • where are you located? I can recommend you a TOP NOTCH, QUALITY PLACE for PDR , and good price too.

    • i would love to know if you have a recommendation for PDR. I'm sydney based

  • I'm in Ocean grove Vic. I went to Sheen today. The paint work is not too bad but a tiny bit has chipped off.

I left it as a character for 2 years today. Came up on my Facebook to remind me..lol..

Need to fix it and then trade in for an upgrade.

Once fixed shall I tell the dealer when I trade it in? Will it devalues that much if I told them I had a dent fixed?

  • PDR then stickerbomb or matt black vinyl
Isn't that what you crazy kids do nowadays?
