Crucial M550 - Kernel Data Inpage Error

Hi guys, I bought the Crucial M550 128GB SSD from Shopping Express in one of the deals here (maybe a month or 2 ago)..and it is now giving the Kernel Data Inpage Error everytime I started the PC. I googled and it appears that this error can be related to either the SSD or the RAM. I swapped RAM, issues persist. Clone the SSD to a Sandisk and boot using that and the problems go away. Seems to me the issue is related to the Crucial.

Just wondering if any of you guys experienced similar?

Am thinking to RMA this from Crucial and have initiated a support ticket but they are a tad slow in their response…

Thanks

You can first attempt to flash the firmware.

    Release Date: 01/8/2015

Firmware for the M550 (all form factors) is being updated from version MU01 to MU02. The M550 is updateable to this new firmware starting from previous versions using tools provided by Micron.

This update will be mandatory cut-in for new product built in Micron factories, and is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field. For end users, it is recommended if the user is experiencing or wishes to prevent an issue related to the following items.

Version MU02 includes the following changes:

Improved stability, Efficiency, and Performance during power state transitions
Improved handling of environments with unstable power supplies
Improved handling of environments with SATA interface signal integrity issues
Improved response time for SMART read commands
Corrected error handling NCQ Trim Commands
Corrected reporting of SMART Attribute 5

Additional details can be found in the firmware guide.

There are also other things you need to check. If you haven't already done so it's a good idea to see if BIOS updates are available and upgrade it. Patch your Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver to the latest version as well.

The solution to this was gleamed from a similar thread in Crucial support forum

If you cannot flash the firmware then you should wait for an RMA approval from Crucial.

  • I flashed the firmware on mine after getting lots of weird issues (including memtest throwing errors on some new RAM) and haven't had any significant errors since (I also ran some NTFS fix stuff inside Linux on the Windows partition).

  • Thanks scrimshaw.

@Salem: when u say weird issues…I take it u don't have that Kernel data inpage error like I have?

Complete OS lock up. No blue screen or anything, just a static picture of my desktop with nothing moving and not responding to keyboards or mouse. Both windows and Ubuntu (dual booting off the same crucial ssd). Random points of operation. Thought it was GPU driver issues in Ubuntu at first until I booted into windows and it was doing it there too. Can't remember what issues windows event logs were reporting, specifically, but it was something to do with NTFS.

      • Thanks Salem. Seems to be an issue just as difficult to deal with as the Kernel error I am seeing. I am glad you got yours fixed.

      • My experience as well prior to the firmware update.

  • duplicated

  • Ok. I have updated the firmware to M02 and also updated intel RST to the latest version. When I shutdown the PC and then rebooted, the same error shows up again…. :(

  • I updated my M550's firmware a couple of days ago. My computer has since been much more stable.

  • Crucial now gotten back to me and they are happy to do the RMA for me BUT I am required to send the SSD all the way back to USA!!! The postage cost cannot be cheap and kinda defeat the purpose of the RMA.

Where do you guys send your Crucial SSD back to if you need to make a RMA return?

Under Australian law it's the retailler you bought it from that is obliged to accept the return. They will then offer a refund, replacement or repair. If you have evidence from crucial saying they'll accept it as RMA, then just take that evidence to the retailler and they should swap it for a replacement at the very least.

The last time I had to return something to Shopping Express they paid the return postage (but that might have been because they recommended me an incorrect item). Contact the rep here and see what they say (shopping express's regular support can be a bit hit or miss, but the ozb rep is usually pretty good).

  • Thanks Salem. Crucial said in their email that they don't have an Australian Branch. I think this is a let down in a way for me.

At your suggestion, I will talk to Shopping Express for a refund and/or replacement. I will report here how this goes.

    • Shopping Express is the retailer, they are required to refund/replace/repair.

  • Thanks guys. I have submitted a ticket to Shopping Express. Hopefully they won't ignore my ticket.

  • SE's turnaround for SSD RMA was just under 2 months for me.
