Who is better 1Cover or TID?
TID all the way.
On my basis of my recent experience where I claimed via TID and my friend claimed via 1cover for cancelled flights due to bad weather and having to rebook on new flights at a much higher cost, TID were a lot easier to deal with. They paid out my claim really quickly, whereas she had to go through a much longer process with 1cover - first they insisted that she call them before submitting a written claim and she said she was on hold for a while. Then they asked her for more information (I submitted the same stuff and TID didn't require anything). Then they took several weeks to pay out her claim.
I haven't had to claim through either company for medical expenses and I haven't compared the PDS for each company in detail though.

Pretty much similar.
Any thoughts on which provider is less hassle free when a claim is required to be lodged?
Compare the PDS's if you want a meaningful comparison. Terms could be materially different.
I recently claimed with 1Cover no problem.
How does 1cover actually perform when a claim is required? Do they pony up, or do they pretend you never bought insurance in the first place?
They ponied up for me. I bought travel insurance from 1Cover for my Thailand three weeks ago and made a claim for a damaged camera no problem. I purchased a month's insurance for travel in North America last year. Pricing is quite competitive for a mid 20 year old and their comprehensive policy is just that; comprehenshve. Fortunately I didn't have to make a claim.
