Does anyone have experience with these?

  • Resolution?

    Motorised?

    • +1

yes they are motorised (Pan: 355°& Tilt: 90°) and resolution is not fantasic - as with all cameras, the more you pay the higher the resolution.

Configuration is via a web interface - but can be a little challenging to set up the ip address.

For the money this is a good introduction to using an ip camera.

      • +9

Fair enough. So should expect Minecraft style video

      • Did you use the CD? How did you config it. Cheers

    • Yes, motorised.

in fact, even before one like it got config'd, it seemed to do a test pan & check of tilt. got stuck near end of pan, but easily worked-around with a gentle nudge.

  • Same junk as on fleabay. Night vision is hopeless.

    • +8

But probably the cheapest I've ever seen them at

      • +1

        Indeed

      • +13

And cheap isn't necessarily a bargain, IMHO

        • -2

Yet people here will neg you for saying that. It's still a "bargain"

        • +1

          I see only +'s.

  • +1

Outdoor ones on offer at $39 too.

    • The security range at kmart is on clearance

    • HD 720p. $39

  • +11

And unless you want to end up on some website aggregator of open access security cams, make sure the security is setup correctly e.g. change the default password.

    • But then pranks like this or this wouldn't be possible.

      • +1

And that's a bad thing ? That was not at all funny.

        • -2

          And that's a bad thing ?

It is because then perpetually-outraged cranks like yourself wouldn't have gotten offended over it and people like me couldn't point how misdirected your outrage was, given that criminals, stalkers or other malicious miscreants could easily use information gleaned from unsecured IP cam feeds to commit actually offensive activities. Nevermind the bumbling idiots who actually put these cameras up in the first place and just hoped for the best, disregarding any modicum of technological common sense.

        • +1

          @Amar89:

Chill dude. He just said it wasn't funny. And he's right. I couldn't sit through it. It was boring. I skipped through a few bits and OMGHAX gave me a small smirk but that was it. And for all that you could possibly be done for computer crimes. Just a waste. Some people just have too much time on their hands.

        • I concur and want my 5 minutes back. He cut an hour out of that?

      • -1

This isn't funny at all, you have terrible sense of humor Amar89

  • can you access the camera from your mobile phone?

    • +9

      Putin can :)

    • +3

      yes you can :)

    • yes.

      • see my post below.

To access remotely the cameras need to be on all the time and you need to set up your router to redirect the port. (yes a little bit of geek magic is required)

        • +4

Much better off using a VPN instead into your network, that way you're not leaving ports open just inviting people to have a go at gaining access..

  • +6

I saw a few yesterday at new town kmart (tas). Also came across Just dance 2014 ps4 for $7.00.

    • +26

Combine both to keep us all entertained

  • Wi-Fi not included in specs, or pan/tilt, but going by the pictures it really looks like it has both?

Are there any on eBay for a few dollars more than can stream 720p?

    • +8

I have a couple of similar ip cameras - eBay cheap ones and Foscam ones.

eBay ones can be hit and miss especially the non brand ones, hence why now I stick to brand name ones. (Even then you need to be careful of copies). In Australia Foscamaustralia.com.au are one of the dealers - they provide good support and look after warranty. If you compare the eBay price with a "buy in Australia price", there is difference, which more than makes up for the warranty if you needed to send it back to Hong Kong/China.

I bought a cheap camera to learn how to use it and then upgraded to Foscam ip camera to get the better infra red and higher recording resolution.

On some cameras you can buy wide angle lenses on eBay - be careful as they dont fit all ip cameras.

There are major differences as you can expect.

They all work in a similar way but the differences are in
      a) ability to upgrade firmware - Foscam and other brand name cameras have dedicated web sites
      b) all can be configured for wireless or wired. The more expensive ones have higher recording resolution, SD card slots built in so you can save footage to the memory card. If you have a multi storey house, connectivity is limited by wifi distance. (also I found wifi can be slow so I installed network cables).
      c) Microphone - I havent had any great luck with 2 way conversation but some mics are ok for listening
      d) for security in addition to changing default passwords on each camera, I modify the port number so that if you want to access the camera within the home network or externally then you need to type in the ip address followed by the port number eg 192.168.1.2:8034
      e) I use Android/iOS and PC software. One of the better PC/Android/iOS apps is called Blueirissoftware.com, comes in a LE version US $29.95 (single camera) and paid version US $59.95 (multi camera). It has multiple password access for different users (and configurable permissions/actions), automatic email/sms notification of triggers (it can automatically email you when the camera records), aggregates the cameras and manages recordings with customisations for profiles, sensitivity when it records, turning Infra red on/off, streams H264, remote control, remote recording, and then makes all the images available via its Android/iOS app. BUT to do this the pc needs to be on all the time.
      f) alternatively there are lots of free apps which you can use to access individual cameras, but these dont have the same management / recording functions as Blueiris.
      g) extension leads for these types of cameras and replacement power supplies are readily available on eBay.

      • +3

Thanks for the detailed reply, bit of food for thought there.

I did end up purchasing the $29 dollar one from Kmart just before I saw your post though. Also got the $9 dollar video peep hole + monitor, and the $29 electronic safe. Then I ended up buying about $60 worth of cheap jeans and shirts.

So yeah, $150 down the hole for just wanting a $29 camera that probably won't be as good as I hoped and going to have to upgrade to a better one soon lol.

      • I second blueiris.

      • Just wondering will BlueIris software recognise and control this camera ?

      • LE version US $29.95

        Jeepers!
TinyCam Monitor PRO (<$5 - and regularly goes on Sale) seems to do everything that you've listed for WAAAY less (with multicamera) all without a PC running 24/7!
        https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alexvas.dv…
The Free Version does everything as above except Audio.

There's an iOS app made by the same guys, but in my limited experience it's nowhere near as good as the Android.

    • I bought a wanscam one on ebay a few years ago. Looks identical to this. It has pan and tilt. Night vision is pretty good as well.

I just have mine inside the house so I can spy on my dog every now and then. 720p would be overkill for this purpose IMO, even at 640x480 I usually set mine to the one below that resolution otherwise it uses to much data when viewing on my phone. On my phone I use TinyCam monitor (android) which I find really good.

I'm actually after a wired IP cam now that can be powered by Ethernet cable. Its easier to get longer Ethernet cable runs than power cable runs. Can anyone recommend any POE IP cams?

      • I'm a huge fan of DLinks IP cameras. Some support PoE but not sure which models as it was never a necessity for me. I just like the MyDLink service being easily accessible on my iPhone.

  • I was just about to post the clearance. I just bought the outdoor one.

    • Any link to the outdoor model?

    • How good are they?

      • +4

You know the scene in the movies, where the detectives can never make out the perp. on CCTV?

        These are worse :)

        Resolution: VGA (640480), QVGA (320240)
Frame Rate: 15fps VGA, 25fps QVGA

  • do they work on battery or what?

    • power cord. no batteries

  • +3

    Awesome for baby monitors…

    • +2

Also for setting up and leaving running whilst you are off on holiday.

Helps to reassure the 'did I leave the gas on' types that the house is still there and whole.

      • +4

Also for setting up and leaving running whilst you are off on holiday.

But who will feed the baby?

        • +5

There will be an app for that.

      • -1

It's a pretty good ip cam that can detect whether you left the gas on

  • +2

I just bought the last one from Kmart Morley

    • +1

I tried looking for one at the Bullcreek (WA) store but the entertainment dept staff said they have not stock security cameras for a while now. Same goes for the cannington store. Anybody else have any luck in WA stores besides morley?

      • Bunbury, but I doubt that helps you.

        • Yup, thats a bit far down south for me. thx for responding anyways.

      • Just been to Kardinya. They have about 8 left. Also about 10 of the outdoor ones. I got 2 of each. Booragoon has none left.

  • +1

Heaps of stock left at Kmart Southland (Mentone - Vic).

Also had a lot of stock of the outdoor version (that does 720p, but a whirlpool post that I looked at on my phone was saying it felt like VGA that was upscaled to 720p), video peep hole conversions + monitor for $9 and digital safes for $29.

  • +1

I got the Video Door viewer for $9. Hope its worth it

  • Don't need one. But will get one for fun and test it out at work

  • Thanks OP. I picked up one of these and a dome camera which was out of stock last time I looked. Dome camera is for fake front of house security, IP camera is for DogCam.

  • How does this compare to the foscam FI8918w?

    • It's a clone..
If it's anything like the close I have, (I also have a real FI8918) then the image quality will be noticeably worse (even on the 4" screen of my Phone) and Audio quality will be very poor.

  • +1

I have one of these and for $30 you can't go wrong . They are crap compared to the $110 3mp Hikvisions from Aliexpress but then again they are nearly 1/4 the price with local warranty . The biggest pain with these besides the resolution is the fact that you need to have them plugged into a 240V socket where as the more expensive cams have POE which makes installation heaps easier .

    • +2

Any chance you can post a image of it in action both normal and with Night Vision on

Also do they come with a wall mount?

      • They do come with a wall mount.

They're low quality, but dirt cheap. I probably should have gotten an outdoor model, but I like the remote pan and tilt. Anyway, I think I'll probably stick it outside under an upside down fishbowl-style glass vase and use the old-school FTP option to set up a webcam at Weather Underground.

      • My choice of K-Mart store had a similar model that did have a wall-mount (I got the last one for $29 ).

I hope the mounting hole & threads are compatible w/ camera tripod, so it can be set up for sports or chess matches even, eg, using a power bank if 240 v ac isn't available.

        • Sports?

      • I have one of these hikivision 2332 or something along the lines of that. Image quality and colour reproduction is really good. Nightvision is awesome and motion detection is extremely sensitive. I have to turn my sensitivity down to 20 to stop recording flying bugs lol.

  • -1

    Likely: ~VGA.

Hey, at this price, it's an good toy for tech-interested kids, ie, as long as they don't breech others' privacy with it.

I wonder if there's a joystick that would let them aim it, eg, to allow following animals in the back garden, etc.

  • Still like to see some images or even video of it in action

  • Both the $29 indoor and $39 outdoor cameras support iOS and Android. However, they are separate apps, hence I stuck to one type. There is no more $29 indoor cameras at KMart Burwood, but plenty of the outdoor ones.

The outdoor one is supposedly 720p, the indoor one is 640x480.

I bought the indoor ones, they work better than I expected (relatively clear day and night vision)! However, I would not buy them unless you are cluey enough to close ports on your router. I was surprised to find I could access my cameras from my phone, even once i've left my WiFi! It is easy enough to change the username/password from the default "admin".

Please comment if anyone found alternative software compatible with this $29 indoor camera.

  • Thanks OP

Walked in to get a camera and walked out with an electronic safe too. I need to stay away from kmart.

Has anyone actually got this to work properly using existing software? p2pipc appears to be no good if you've got a dynamic ip address as I have? I used no-ip.com which has Dynamic DNS Update Client (DUC) for Windows software that will check whether your ip has changed every 5 mins. You have to use one of the provided hosts. All free and works fine.

All works fine via the browser. Port forwarding works fine. Can view the cam via browser using the DDNS host as the address and pointing to correct port. However in provided software DDNs Sevice Settings the DDNS Status shows "No Action". And I can't get email to work for Mail Service Settings for 3 different email servers.

Tried downloading IPCameraTool version 1.0.0.1 for foscam FI8918w. Didn't recognise camera.

On IOS I can view camera via browser. Camera operation buttons don't work tho. Tried iCamViewer (using Foscam FI8918w). Gets a snapshot image then need to refresh but no live image. Tried free Foscam Viewer v1.1.5. Fails to login. Used correct http port but not sure what media port to use so used same.

Would really like to get email to work. The DDNS works but software doesn't recognise it. Suppose I'll try babycam from TinyCam for IOS next.

    Any clues? Cheers

    • What browser URL do you use? Thanks!

      • In my case I'm using one of the hosts on no-ip.com followed by port number. But it would be whatever the IP address that the camera has been assigned followed by the port number you port forwarded thru router eg 10.1.1.9:900 or ur ip address followed by port number eg 52.23.34.765:888.

        Hope that helps :)

  • Someone tell Channel 7 so they can buy some new cameras to film their AFL games. (You'll only understand if you know their refusal to broadcast in HD)

  • Picked one up today. Pretty straightforward unit. Nothing amazing but is as advertised.

Does anyone know anything about the various firmware projects for these things? Has anyone managed to get terminal access? It runs uCLinux and has a 4mb ROM and at least 16mb RAM so there is some good modding potential.

  • I picked up one of these cameras today also. I have been playing with it tonight. I have been able to get all the functions that I have tried to work, including DDNS.

Resolution is certainly VGA quality. I have only tried it indoor in normal room lighting. Image quality is acceptable. I have not tried outdoor in full sunlight yet. The GUI looks as detailed as a FOSCAM camera, basically same options available.

I can view it on my PC ok and sort of mostly works with P2PIC. I don't think this IOS app is very refined, so I have been trying other IOS apps. My 'standard' IOS apps are FoscamPro and Baby Monitor. However, I have not been able to get it to work with either yet. I think the problem is that I cannot find a camera make and model in these apps which work. I have tried on LAN and WAN after opening the camera port (8500) on my router.

Does anybody know of an IOS app that works (other than P2PIC of course. If I cannot find one, this camera will not be very useful to me. It does work with safari however using the DDNS (WAN) address.

    • Did you get it to work with Foscam Pro IOS yet?

If not did you try Foscam FI8918W

Also have you tried IP Camera Tool for setting up on Windows / Mac?

      • Tried it with FOSCAM Pro IOS. IN the setup screen after tapping 'test' it does say connected (to my DDNS address). However, back on viewing screen it says sending login request, but never comes back with image. Simultaneously, I can see it at the same DDNS address in Firefox on my PC. So no luck yet.

In baby cam, I tried foscam and F18918W and it briefly showed an image in 'tap to test', but then it disappeared and would not show on the main viewing screen. Most disappointing.

Have not tried IP camera tool yet.

  • I got Baby Monitor IOS to work using no-ip.com for DDNS and using one of the hostnames provided. Software says not working. But does. Vendor set to Foscam, Model Fi8918/Fi8918W. Can take photos of image. Looks OK.

But I want email and alarm to work. Looking at the thread on the outdoor 720P outdoor cam sold by KMart (Also supported by Tempo) the alarm system doesn't work. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/187326 & http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2362073. After spending over a day playing with it possibly same here. Dunno how purchasers get these on shelves without testing first. But if u happy just to use cam to view it's OK. I want to be notified for intruder alert.
    Be happy to be corrected.

Also tried software for Foscam Fi8918W but didn;t recognise cam. U have to input media port. No idea here. Looked at NAT table and tried those values to no effect. Also tried trial version of Blue Iris and it couldn't detect camera although was happy to go thru DDNS. Think I tried all the generic values at top and the Foscam one.

    EDIT:
Using Blue Iris all the generic cam types at top with Port 8999 open I get :

    Opening port "port number"…
    HTTP request…
    Redirected to "my ip.address"
    OK
    GetCapabilities…
    No response
    Opening port 8999…
    GetCapabilities…
    No response
    Checking for common cameras…
    Foscam FI86xx/98xx compatible?
    Foscam FI89xx compatible?
    Foscam FI9821 V2 compatible?
    Foscam FI9821 media port compatible?
    RTSP port open?
    No automatic configuration made
    Done

  • Anyone get these cameras to work with Foscam Pro app for IOS?

Also will it work with the windows / Mac program -

    IP Camera Tool

  • picked one up as a test mule for better cams later. Will try to set up with provided software or blue iris to see how it goes.

  • I have no experience with these cameras.
    I have a couple questions,
Is the green light meant to stay flashing?
& I can get the app working on the iPad but nothing shows up when I try to view it on my iPhone 4 does anyone know how I can fix this?

    • +2

I just installed mine and yes the green light stay flashing.
i had to connect the camera to my modem/router via the network cable as the app cant find the camera wirelessly.
Once the app can see the camera, just tap on the setting on the right side then choose wifi settings > available wifi > select your wifi and enter the password.

After the wifi has been setup you can disconnect the network cable and the camera should work wirelessly.
