  • "Looks to be install only." In store? :-)

    • Haha, yea oops. I fixed it now :P

    • +2

Install only as well right? :)

  • Might be a silly question, but what do most of you use these cards for?

I only purchased a 3DS XL a while ago, and so far have only played a couple of hours of Pokemon, so still pretty new to the Nintendo world of gaming.

    • +3

Digital copies of games and DLC. Some people like the convenience of not having to swap out discs or carts also. Especially good for handheld systems.
The eShop may also sometimes run digital-only deals and some games are only available via digital eg, virtual console.

      • +1

I am just curious, is it just me or the downloading speed is slow on digital copies of the games?

        • +3

Not just you. There isn't really a way to tell how fast things are downloading because the progress bar is pretty useless. That, and the sizes are listed in "blocks".

        • +1

          @rith:
          1 block = 128kb
          8 blocks = 1mb

These cards are only to buy stuff from estore for 3DS stuff or Wii U stuff. I usually buy themes, DLC and games on sale with it. You can grab the Guild 01 and Guild 02 games from the eStore. Great games. Not to mention Shantae is on sale now, might be in time to grab the eshop credit to buy shantae real cheap!

    • Do yourself a favour and get a copy of fire emblem : awakening.

Best handheld game I have ever played.

    • On the 3DS, I used mine to purchase Picross 5, plus waiting for the Mario vs Donkey Kong game being released next week which is eshop only. All my other games are cartridges. I used the rest of my balance on Wii U games- lots of awesome games on the eshop, plus DLCs.

    • I'm going to buy the old gameboy colour mario golf and tennis games. They are awesome.

    • Ive been slowly buying classics when they go on special, got all the mega man from nes and all of zelda so far. Ill prob stock up on 100 and just sit on it til things go on special really. Heaps of good games on both consoles eshops

  • How much is the Mario Kart 8 FULL DLC Pack?

    • +2

$16 for both DLC packs (or $10 individually).

    • $12 apparently…
      http://kotaku.com/mario-kart-8s-dlc-is-great-but-it-still-ne…

All of this is available for $7.99, or $11.99 if you purchase it along with the second DLC pack, which is coming in May 2015 and adds an equal amount of new stuff to the game.

      • +2

        That's the US price

      • Ill wait till may

  • +3

Not as good as 20%, like last time, but still pretty good. Especially if you're running low.

  • Off topic: I bought the Mario Kart Wii-U Basic bundle a few months ago, which came with a free download (chose Super Mario Bros U). I can only install about 4 games (with updates) on it.

The 8GB Basic Set has approximately 3GB available for data storage and downloads.

What's the best work around? 32GB USB flash drive or external hard drive?

Edit: ha.. again, should research before posting.

Can I use a Flash/Thumb drive as an external storage device?
Because these devices have a limited number of rewrites and are not suited to long-term storage of important game data, we do not recommend the use of Flash/thumb drives as an external storage device solution. For best results, we recommend using a hard drive with its own power supply that connects to the Wii U via the USB port on the console.
Commercial Flash memory has a limit on the number of times you can write over it and we don't recommend flash memory devices for long-term storage of important save data.

    • +1

You can get around needing a power supply by getting a y cable usb connector so it uses two of the USB ports for more power.

Best (easiest) solution though is to get a portable hard drive like a Seagate Expansion (non Desktop) or WD Elements and buy a Y cable (as s4sep says above).
Here is the one I bought (for a USB3.0 drive): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-3-0-Y-Cable-Y-Cable-Micro-Typ…

Plug it into one two of the many USB ports on the Wii U and it works a treat. Note that you won't be able to use it for anything other than the Wii U.

  • Awesome. I've been holding out for something like this. Now I can get the three in one phoenix wright game. Pity all their online games cost as much as if not more than they do in store. I like having them handy and am always losing cartridges.

    • +3

There's an eshop sale for the Phoenix Wright games now which ends on the 27th so perfect timing. 25% off the trilogy ($33.45) and 44% off Dual Destinies ($22.20).

      • Fantastic. Thanks for the heads-up! :)

      • Thanks. So excited. Now I just need the patience to wait another week or so.

      • I've played them all but out of curiosity, does the Ace Attorney games include Apollo Justice?

        • I believe the trilogy only contain the original, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations. None of the spin-offs.

        • @pakon29: Cool. Don't think it's a spinoff though since it links the original trilogy to DD.

        • @leonheart1: It's not included. That's still only available on the DS. Maybe one day they'll port that and the two Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth games to something else?

        • @whgb: The second Edgeworth game will take a while if not forever since not even the official English version is out and I had to play a fan-translated version, not that there was anything wrong with the translation. In addition to the great plot, it was interesting to see the characters as 2D sprites in both prosecutor games.

        • @leonheart1: Yeah, I'm in the second case of the fan translation now. It's mostly a great effort, with some irksome turns of phrase, e.g. "family contact" instead of "familial contact". But that's just nitpicking. Enjoying it a lot, even if my old DS's hinge and L button are broken.

  • Can you buy these with a EB gift card?

    • Ebgames gift card is as good as cash in store right so I don't think why not.

  • Remind me please. I was going to purchase the Pokemon Bank sometime soon. Looks like this is a great opportunity :)

  • +1

I'd just like to add that there is a foreign transaction fee on the Nintendo eShop, so buying these cards (even when not on sale) is the cheapest way to buy games, but at the same time they only come in certain denominations.

    • This is not true. I've bought credit with my card and there were no additional charges. You're dealing with Nintendo Australia and paying in Australian dollars so there shouldn't be any foreign transaction fee. Maybe you were connected to the eShop for another country.

      • +1

This is also not entirely true.
The Australia eShop is hosted in Europe, there can be a foreign transaction fee but I've found it to be dependent on the bank the card is with. I've had no fees from NAB but have had fees from ING and UBank. The fees may go unnoticed because they're charged a couple of days later.

        • Thanks for the info. It's unfortunate if you're with a bank that charges the fee.

Use the Groupon Woolworth gift cards to buy the EB gift cards to buy the Nintendo gift cards and it's pretty much free :P

    • 19.5% discount on Woolworths cards?
      15% on these Nintendo cards…0.805 * 0.85 = 0.68…
So you received a discount of over 30% :) Nice!

    • Does EB really accept Woolies gift cards?

      • +1

No. You just need to go to Woolies to use Woolies gift cards to buy EB gift cards and bring the EB gift cards to EB stores and use the EB gift cards in EB stores.

    • Can you link me to this offer? I had a quick look but couldn't find anything. Cheers!

Are Nintendo download games still tied to machine, not account? That is, if you DS borks, you are out of luck installing them on a new DS?

Just picked up a 3DS XL (thanks OzBargain!) and like others, am new to the Big N eco-system.

    • Not too sure. You log in to the eShop with your Nintendo ID, so purchases would be made under that so you'd assume they won't be locked to a DS. Having said that, I think you can only use it on one at a time? Might be something worth contacting Nintendo about.

    • +2

Downloaded games are tied to your Nintendo Network ID and console. A system transfer can be done when you have two working consoles. If one is broken, you need to contact Nintendo support.

  • how long are they valid for?

    • +1

No expiry date. It says on the back of the gift card if that what your question is about. The deal runs to 7 April.

  • Does it work on 3ds xl?

    • +1

      Yea. Works fine.

      • Cheers. Was gonna get it then someone I messaged last night just replied me and agreed to sell me his new 3ds xl for $210 hehe

      • +2

        • Haha thanks, yeh got the new 3ds xl
