80

This drill is back. It's a cordless Drill. 24V 1.5Ah Li-Ion battery.

Last year Choice gave this the top score in their test, rating it best performing of them all, beating $250 ones from the likes of Hitachi, Makita & AEG.
Also coming with a 3 year warranty makes this well worth a look unless you're a tradesman needing multiple batteries (and need to keep face on the jobsite).

13mm keyless chuck
2 speed metal gearbox
Powerful LED light
Compact and lightweight
Includes 1 hour fast charger

Also selling drill bit sets for $9.99. and hole saw sets for $19.99

  • I got one from Aldi a while back, but the chuck was wonky so I returned it and got a refund…

    • Are you sure it was this 24V one? They also sold a cheaper 12 drill called Taurus, not titanium

      • No, it was 18V but the same brand.

Nothing worse than a wonky Chuck

24v on paper sounds pretty beasty

i have an 18v B&D and like shooter mcgavin, it eats shit for breakfast

  • I'll assume at this price point it's variable speed?

Sorry if this is an annoying question but how long do the batteries last? I don't mean drill time, I mean the actual battery life span or expectancy. What happens when it gives up the ghost, can you just buy a generic drill battery or are they all proprietary?

I do enough stuff around the house to warrant a cordless drill but I don't want to buy one only to find out in 9 months the battery can't even hold a charge. I hate having to return things, especially "off brand" stuff because in my experience the customer service is crap. Even good brands have let their customer service slip.

    • its aldis

who gives a shit? they take anything back, they wont argue with you

i'd really be surprised if they warrant the battery for 3yrs but hey, its aldis, they surprise regularly

    • At this price you could buy 2 and throw out the drill and keep the spare battery. Batteries in my experience are proprietary and you would have trouble finding a replacement. That said for round the house work I would expect the battery to last at the very least the 3 years of the warranty.

      • yeah pretty sure the pro 18v batteries are more than $89

      http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/is_lithium_ion_th…

Aging is a concern with most lithium-ion batteries and many manufacturers remain silent about this issue. Some capacity deterioration is noticeable after one year, whether the battery is in use or not. The battery frequently fails after two or three years. It should be noted that other chemistries also have age-related degenerative effects. This is especially true for nickel-metal-hydride if exposed to high ambient temperatures. At the same time, lithium-ion packs are known to have served for five years in some applications.

Manufacturers are constantly improving lithium-ion. New and enhanced chemical combinations are introduced every six months or so. With such rapid progress, it is difficult to assess how well the revised battery will age.

thats a great response. Anyone that says a battery will last 3 years is not being realistic - it might last 3 years, but don't be surprised if it doesn't last 12 months.
As as rule, if I don't need battery operated tools, I don't buy them.
Also, warranties almost always caveat batteries with a much shorter timeframe - and there's good reason for that. Batteries are notoriously unreliable.

        • Why I bought 12v omits for 30 bucks that plugs in, does the job as it's for around the house. Will hopefully work when I am in the grave

  • What I want to know is how do they get 24V using liion cells. How many actual nominal 3.6v cells is that?

    • Maybe they're cheating and calling them 4v each, seeing as they charge to 4.2

      • Yeah quite possibly; even some reputable brand name mfrs do that.

      • ping-pong ping-pong, you are correct! 6 18650 cells in series. 24v open circuit, that drops to 22.8v drilling pine

  • Are these special deals in store only or can they ship? No Aldi in Perth and my cordless drill (old Ryobi) is terrible.

    • No shipping unfortunately. They do these deals as incentives to get people into the store and buy their groceries at the same time

      • Thanks for replying. That's a shame!

  • Anyone know if the hole saw set has a 60mm?

  • How would this compare with the 909 from Masters? Both are 24v, Li-Ion battery, 13mm chuck, and are $89 … Except the 909 comes with 2 batteries and has a hammer function.

Also hoping I might be able to find a discount voucher for Masters too.

I'm in the market for a new drill and just looking for the best buy.

    • Buy a Makita instead. I got a NiCad Makita with 2 batteries last year, from a deal posted on here, and it cost me $50. Down from $200.

      • NiCad is in no way comparable with LiIon.

        • They are both batteries. My Makita NiCad is directly comparable to a Lion drill. Infact Makita makes both. My Makita Nicad drill is significantly better than my Ozito and Performer Lion drills in every way. Just because NiCad is older tech, doesn't mean it is useless. In certain situations, Nicad batteries are superior to Lion batteries.
