  • would I be able to jam one of these into my old Aspire One netbook?

  • if it uses a sata hdd yes

Good find and first post OP. Considering the state of the AUD a bargain like this is a sight for sore eyes.

  • Not a bad deal for a 500 GB SSD let alone a 850 evo. Just bought one thanks OP.

  • Veeeery tempting for my laptop.

I need a 1TB, but I'm thinking of two of these instead. Would it affect my battery much having 2x SSD's (instead of 1)?

    • If you have space for two I wouldn't worry. Screens are what kills battery life IMO.

      • I have two SSD slots.

This statement seems like an exaggeration- "Improves battery life by up to 50 minutes vs. hard disk drives".

        • Make sure those SSD slots are not mSATA or M.2 sockets, as these won't work with the one listed on this deal.

That statement seems fairly accurate, they use a fraction of the power of traditional HDDs.

        • I have two SSD slots.

Do you mean you actually have two, 2.5" disk bays or one, 2.5" disk bay and an mSATA or M.2 socket on the motherboard?

There aren't that many laptops with dual 2.5" disk bays around.

@Amar89: I took my dvd drive out and put in a drive caddy. Works a treat.

        • @Amar89: I'm 90% sure it's 2x 2.5" drives (fits 2x 7mm 2.5" Drives). Model is Clevo P650SE

    I hate you OzB
    Just bought one!

  • Anyone know why do I get charged for foreign fee from my bank??
Is this normal if purchase from Amazon.com?

    • +2

      You're paying in US dollars.

      • I have chosen AUD

      • Probably the recipient is overseas.

    • -1

      You can't be that ignorant.

  • Awesome! Just what I was looking for to upgrade my MacBook. Tx

  • Any suggestion for a 256gb~ SSD?

    • Yep; Buy this 500gb one. Even if you're just running this as a boot drive you can always use the space.
Any particular reason why would want a smaller one? Or do you want a upper-spec 256gb 850 Pro?

      • +1

My guess is price? I would love a deal on the 256GB and would jump on that instantly.

        • Yeah price. This is too expensive for me

        • +2

@michaellee117: as long as you are aware the general rule is that you should keep 20-25% free space on your SSD for best performance. Make sure that's taken into consideration when choosing size.

        • @michaellee117: ahh cool cool - well, In my personal experience I did what you are thinking: bought the 256gb because of price. Ended up upgrading to a 500gb within 12 months as I got sick of using up all the space! They're so fast that you it affords you the luxury of not having to delete crap out of necessity.

  • Nice first post OP. Bought.

  • would this fit in my macbook pro late 2013?

    • Pretty sure they use a different type of SSD. I have the same machine.

  • I wonder when USD:AUD is ~1:1 again.

Long term forecasts peg it at around US0.80 to the dollar. Strong AUD would hurt the economy.

  • Thanks for posting AUD price and not misleading USD in the price.
    + for that :)

  • bought one, thanks op

  • Is this compatible with 7 year old laptops?

    • +1

If the laptop uses SATA and 2.5" drive size then yes.

You can also get the Crucial MX100 SSD 512GB for A$239 delivered from Amazon Italy: http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00KFAGCUM/ref=ox_sc_act_tit…

    • Is this any better/faster? Remember the 850 has a 5 yr warranty

      • "Crucial, along with parent-company Micron, is another big name is SSDs and its MX100 range is its price/performance hero right now - especially in the 512GB capacity. It's a tough battle with the 500GB Samsung 850 EVO, with both posting very similar synthetic benchmark numbers."

        Source: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/storag…

        • Ahh but note this is a 9.5mm. The 850 is a 7mm drive. In my laptop, it only fits 7mm drives.

        • @ycon:

"The MX100 looks as plain as it gets – it's a simple aluminium case with a Crucial sticker on it. The drive is 7mm high, which ensures it will fit into just about any laptop."

          Source: http://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/sto…

The 7/9.5 on Amazon Italy probably means it is compatible with both dimensions.

        • @Zirkaloy: Okay thanks for clarification

    • Looks like the cheapest on there is 181,48 EUR which Google converts to $254.30 and that's before postage so how did you get $239?

  • Any recommendations for an enclosure? Pref thunderbolt?

  • +1

Bought one. Is warranty available in Australia? Or does it have to go back to Amazon/

    • Most likely have to go back to Amazon for warranty.

  • Been waiting for a deal like this, thanks op! Just ordered one!

  • Cheers OP ordered one. This is a great SSD for the money. Prefer Samsung to Crucial, but above link was tempting too.

  • Got one. Great price. Thanks OP.

  • Any reason why this couldn't go into a desktop?

    • Would like to know too. Could this go on a desktop setup?

      • +4

As long as you have a way to physically mount it then yes it would be fine in a desktop. SATA data and power connectors are the same for 3.5" and 2.5" drives.

    • Yes it can be used on a desktop PC via a 2.5" to 3.5" bay SSD bracket. Only about a little $5 investment plus the usual other expenses like a SATA data cable and power cable if you don't already have one for it.

      Example here: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

  • Was waiting for the Crucial MX100 512GB to drop in price again; didn't think the Samsung 850 EVO would drop instead! Similar performance but 850 EVO has 5 year warranty compared to Crucial MX100 3 year.

This will replace my current desktop SSD~! Thanks op!

  • Bought… first ever SSD by itself.

Now to figure out how to put it in my desktop from way back 2008.

    • Lol why the neg?

  • Aaaaaaaaaarrrrghhhhhhhh !

  • Good thing I happen to still have 200 USD lying around, time to convert it back to AUD and feel better after another successful impulse buy.

  • Tempting! My 64gb ssd is getting full!

  • This, along with the $US20 wedding registry credit, will make an awesome PS4 upgrade.

  • Back to 200 usd

  • Price is now USD199.

Ebay has a group deal for WD 2TB My Passport Ultra Portable Hard Drive @ $133 if any of you are interested. Only 66 left as of posting.

    http://groupbuy.ebay.com.au/deal?itemId=361213356935

    • +1

How is this relevant to an SSD deal?

      • It's not. Just want to share what I saw this morning. I can't submit a deal due to some error.

        Enjoy!

  • Is the warranty on these international warranty?

    • +1

Looks like there is no international warranty but since it's bought from the USA it will fall under the Samsung SSD USA warranty policy. There is a repair centre in the USA listed on the bottom of the USA policy guide. So since it's being bought from Amazon it's USA stock so would either have to ship it back to Amazon or through Samsung USA. Better hope it doesn't break down any time within the 5 years USA warranty or will be shipping it off to the USA and as we all know how expensive Australia Post international is and take weeks to get back from the USA. Was that worth the $60 difference over PC Case Gear price for this?.

      http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisit…

      • Thank you, in that case, it is better to pay a bit more for the local stock or wait for a price reduction.

  • Is it compatible with MacBook pro?

    • +1

      Maybe. Do some research.

      • Looks like it is compatible. Also interested if someone here upgraded their macbook pro

  • +1

Hoping that this is an indication that there's going to be a lot more deals like this- lower prices on SSD's

  • Thanks OP, got one before it expired. Had been waiting quite a while for 500 or 512 GB SSD in the $225-$250 range, with decent reviews.

I'd decided not to touch the crucial MX100 due to boot issues: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/MX100-will-not-boot… , nor the Samsung 840 due to the ongoing problem with slowdown on old data, and that Samsung's workaround requires an app which isn't available for my platform (Linux) : http://techreport.com/review/27727/some-840-evos-still-vulne…

And for SSD reliability, Intel or Crucial or Samsung seem to be the best brands. So that left the crucial M550 or the Samsung Pro 850 as the best looking models (reliable, right size, suitable brand), but it's been ages since I've seen a sale on either.

At a quick search I can't see any known issues on the 850 (non-pro), although it's a relatively new product, and the 5-year warranty seems like a vote of confidence in the product, so I'll get this instead. Thanks once again!

  • +1

I know the Samsung EVO 500GB is good and all but you could have got a Crucial M550 512GB SSD from ShoppingExpress for $245 delivered and Australian warranty.

  • Anyone know if I can cancel an order? Really would prefer Aussie warranty.. Didnt think about it at the time!

  • Could i install this into a Dell Latitude E7440?

    -n00b

    • +1

If you get a 2.5" to 3.5" SSD bracket and if the Dell computer has a spare 3.5" drive bay as well as a spare SATA data connector on the motherboard and a SATA power cable then yes.
