Engine Oil All The Same?

I'm about to head down to coles and buy some engine oil they only have 2 type of engine oil, coles brand and that armour brand. Is Coles brand any good for my Honda 2000 accord? Never had a break down.

As long as it's 10W-40 you should be fine. Remember to check your oil level and don't overfill it.

  • Engine breakdown caused by bad/wrong oil normally happens only once in a car lifetime.

p.s. I really don't have knowledge what is in the Coles brand oil inside. It can easily be OK. Given no cold, no really heavy traffic in Au and simple engine - why not.

  • Is 15w-40 fine they only have valvoline?

    • Using a thicker oil will put more strain on your oil pump.

What's the recommended temp range for the car - 10w-30? Ideally use that but 10-40 or 15-40 should make little difference as long as it's an API spec (which even most of the cheapie no-name oils are these days) and you don't live in a very cold climate.

It's much more important to change your oil frequently accordingly to manufacturer standards than the 'quality' of the oil for the majority of the cars.

    • Castrol Magnatec 10-40 would be fine for a car of that age.
What Minty says… change it frequently, yearly at least.
The oil filter must be replaced as well.

Engine oils are not the same. You have mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic. On top of this, each oil have different additives to clean your engine and better lubricate it. The basic oils only last for about 5,000kms and lose their properties very quickly.
