Great price & good spotting as always

  • Melbourne only?

For those playing along at home: Once you add all the extras in, the prices are no cheaper compared to the Qantas Sale to Singapore. For a wider drinks menu, better food, Qantas Points and free-flowing alcohol I'd choose Qantas.

      I was wondering this.

      • +2

Yep. Here is the breakdown for Jetstar (MEL-SIN):

        • 30kg Baggage: $60.00
        • Meals: $24.00
        • Comfort Pack: $10.00
        • Entertainment: $9.00

Grand total means Jetstar is only $8 cheaper. But you don't get any Qantas Ponts with Jetstar unless you add a plus bundle for $55 more. So really, flying Jetstar means you'll be much worse off if you use all those add-ons.

        • +2

To be honest I wouldn't get the meal, comfort pack and Entertainment add ons.
If you got the plus bundle, I believe you get a meal? Plus with the bundle you get more SC's and QFF points then with a discount economy flight with Qantas.

To each his own but getting cheap flights to Bali, Singapore and Bangkok opens up cheap flights to other destinations.

I just compared these two (Jetstar and Qantas). Went with Jetstar. My reasoning:

          • I believe Qantas' credit card fee is $30. Jetstar is $12.50.
          • Qantas charges $25 to select a regular seat in advance (I believe). Jetstar charges $5 I think? Jetstar is $45 for exit row. Not sure what Qantas charges for exit row.
          • Would never use the comfort pack.
          • Booked one 25kg bag ($40) for two of us. Plenty.
          • have an iPad / laptop / book for entertainment.
          • debated the meals — just going to get subway at the airport.

          Qantas: $299 fare + $30 CC + $25 seat = $354, or $708 for two people.
          Jetstar: $188 fare + $12.50 CC + $45 exit row seat + $20 (1/2 bag fee) = $265.50, or $531 for two people.

So, for my purposes, I'm $177 ahead (for two people). And sitting in the exit row with lots of legroom. Yes, Qantas includes food. But does not include the exit row at that price.

@dmz: I've booked a few flights on Qantas and there was never a credit card fee, so not sure where the $30 fee comes from?

Emirates is also having this $299 Singapore offer, so you could book through them to save the $25 for seat selection if you need this. They are codeshare with Qantas and booking via Qantas doesn't charge for this seat selection either.

You didn't include the Subway, which is a component of your flight. You get fed very well in Qantas/Emirates and I doubt that Subway would get you through the entire 7.75 hour flight. So, you'll likely be buying more food than you otherwise would on Jetstar anyway.

From my return flight to Bangkok last year, Qantas gave me enough points for a domestic short-haul trip. That's a heavily discounted trip (I still have to pay taxes). You'd have a similar bounty from this trip, which allows a cheaper following booking. No doubt you'd make use of it as well if you're Australian.

You'd have more seat room on Qantas/Emirates anyway, which means exit row isn't really a benefit of that Jetstar price.

So what I'm seeing is $299 for Qantas/Emirates vs $265.50 for Jetstar for your personal needs. That is with: less baggage, no food, Jetstar (enough said?), no QFF points.
There are definitely people who would prefer to pay the extra $24.50. Or $69.50 (when you exclude exit row). Or, in the case of food and QFF points, will end up spending some of it anyway.

          @xsacha:

          Qantas credit card fees: http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/schedule-of-fees/au…
It also states this right on the fare selection page when making a booking.

          According to seatguru.com:
          Qantas A330-300: Seat pitch 31", width 17"
          Jetstar A330-200: Seat pitch 31", width 17.5"

          Qantas seat selection fees: http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/seat-selection/glob…
Economy: $25 for regular seat. $90 for exit row.

Emirates says you can't book exit row in advance.

If I redo my calculation, including the exit row fee, and food costs:

          Qantas: $299 fare + $30 CC + $90 exit row = $419, or $838 for two people.
          Jetstar: $188 fare + $12.50 CC + $45 exit row + $20 (1/2 bag fee) + $24 food = $289.50, or $579 for two people.

Savings of $259 with Jetstar. I should also note, then when I made the booking, the sale fare wasn't available with Qantas on the day I wanted to fly. So going with Qantas would have required an additional night stay in a hotel (and associated costs), and an additional vacation day.

But it's just 58% of the fare

        $348 vs $599

If $599 to Hong Kong instead of Singapore, than that's good

        • Wrong. Jetstar comes to $616.79 for a comparative fare. It is more expensive than Qantas.

          @Bargain4U:

Hi Bargain4U. Not sure why you're comparing this Jetstar deal (with all the add-ons), to your Qantas deal (which you've kindly re-advertised). Most travellers are quite aware what you don't get with Jetstar, which is the very reason Jetstar exists to begin with. Even though your Qantas deal is great in terms of quality, I'm sure there's plenty of people that would choose to save $251 and spend it on something else. I for one would. Just saying.

    • it's a dumb comparison.

like optioning-up a corolla and comparing it to a mercedes that comes standard with those options.

some people want to piss their money away on "luxury" (that's ok) and some people just want to get where they're going for as cheaply as possible (that's ok too).

("free-flowing alcohol" - probably a reason to steer away from qantas .. rows and rows of chubby middle-aged, corporate bogans in pinstriped suits, packed into economy like sardines, sinking free booze like it's still the 1980s .. leering at the flight attendants and turning their noses up at "the dirty hippies who fly LCCs" )

  • Thanks TA. Awesome post. JEtstar was always gonna cut their price if QANTAS go on sale

what the? Travel Period = 26 Mar - 29 Jun 2015 and the fine print "Not available between 26Mar to 04Apr and 20Jun to 29Jun."

might as well says Travel Period = 05Apr - 20Jun. so misleading.

  • Around queen bday long weekend
Leave Thur and return Tue morning

  • Banner still on Jetstar homepage but when clicked shows no sale fares available.
