If i get a good modem will it make my ADSL 2+ download speed better?

My internet download speed is really terrible and i was wondering if i buy a good MODEM/ will it improve my download speed. I can't even watch youtube/stream without it buffering every 10 second. It'd be nice also if you guys could link me to some reliable/good modem. Also if i were to get a good modem, what speed do you think i will get? Maybe 5-10mb? Thanks in return!

Internet: Optus ADSL2+ Unlimited.

Modem: The one optus provided us in the package.

Speed: 200kb - 1.2mb.

Distance: Not really sure.

Honestly the best and most informative help you will get is here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/15

  • It's depend on how far your address from the adsl exchange. If you are that far changing the modem will not make that much of different.
Also need more information about your current modem, what is the model and how old it's?

  • call Optus and report a fault saying it drops out and is too slow to use.

  • In general, an the modems an ISP supplies have a chipset that they know works well with their ADSL hardware at the phone exchange. What sync speed does your modem report you as getting?
Put your address in at http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au and it will give you an estimated distance from the phone exchange and an estimate of your expected sync speed. You'll need to click the blue dot on your address on the map to get this info.

    • Those estimations are way off mine is estimated speed of 6000 im getting 1200.

      • It estimates based on the cable length from the exchange and also what users have advised they're getting in the area. If you can't get sync at 1500 or above then you should lodge a fault. OF course it'll help if you run an isolation test first (modem straight in to a phone socket, no filters or other phones plugged in, and even trying other sockets in the house)

I think OP is getting confused between kb/s (the lower case b indicating bits) and kB/s (the Capital B indicating bytes - which are 8 bits).
Your modem will tell you the sync speed in kilobits.. I reckon it'll be around 9000kbps - which roughly equates to a maximum speed of 1200kB/sec.

A different modem may be able to squeeze a few extra hundred kilobits out of the line, but could reduce your line speed by a similar amount. Not worth the investment unless the existing modem is playing up.

Didn't someone ask the same thing yesterday? YMMV. The speed difference between modems is likely negligible.

    • They do mention video streaming, but I doubt that Mr/Ms Yogapants personally, really, needed faster internet - what with the less than demanding 'bounce' between OzBargain and their no doubt saucy Instagram feed

CAUTION: Word to the wise - assuming that you don't wish to be distracted, never type ANY WORDS into the Instagram search engine!

  • You can always try changing your line profile as well.

  • My optus cable internet is pissing me off!, had the modem changed, still can't watch youtube videos smoothly on 360p… Same on my PC, mac, xbox and phones.

  • Generally if I replace my customer's modems with a Fritz!Box, I tend to get a 1-2Mbps increase, and there's no more drop-outs or reboots necessary. Not at all the sort of increase you're looking for so the answer to your question I think is YES, getting a good modem WILL inc increase your speed but not in the order of magnitude you're looking for. I think you need to hassle your ISP on this one.

  • i'm currently not at home so i'm not too sure what modem i have, but i guarantee that they gave me a poop box one. Thanks for the replies guys, appreciated!

  • I used the adsl 2+ exchange website and entered my address. I got

    Light of sight: 8838 m

    Estimated maximum speed : 123
