Will Getting a New Modem boost ADSL2+ speed?

I'm not the best in IT/Internet stuff so I would really value any inputs. Thank you! :)

Currently using:

Download Speed: 14.59Mb/s. Upload: 0.76Mb/s
Line of Sight Distance: 211m. Possible Cable Distance: 466m
No NBN for my area for at least the next 2-3 years

Budget for new modem: <$130. Would appreciate recommendations.
Considering TP Link Archer D7 after seeing recent MSY deal, billion or any next generation modems but need your opinion if this modem will increase my current speed significantly (download speed of 20Mb/s). According to the TPG map, other people in my area can get 20Mb/s. Thanks!

UPDATE: Got the Archer D7, see below comment.

Are you using a wireless connection, or a wired connection?

    • Connected my computer to modem wirelessly. Download speed obtained was connected wirelessly as well.

Okay, you might want to look into getting and using 802.11ac.

        • How would that help his ADSL2+ speeds?

Some modems can give better sync speeds than others, but for most cases the differences would be negligible. Also I've had cheap modems get better sync speeds than expensive ones on some phone lines, but if I test those two same modems on another line the results are reversed.

Probably no need to waste your money, I doubt there's gonna be any speed difference if you are already getting 14.59Mb/s down.
ADSL is slow, nothing can save you from slow speeds unless you get fibre or cable.

    • That's a good point. I'm debating whether an extra 5Mb/s speed boost is worth the extra money. Telstra is the only provider that can give me cable (no fibre options at my area). But at $113 for 500GB per month, that's too steep. Thanks!

      • Yeah personally I wouldn't bother buying a new one 15.6 is pretty good! What are you needing the extra speed for?

        • Haha. My mother loves watching her soaps online and sometimes when I watch my shows online. it lags a little! Thought a little bit of extra speed would be good :)

Have you checked out TPG fibre (not nbn)? http://www.tpg.com.au/fttb
You might have some luck getting it if you live in an apartment building.

        I'm on it and I get 93 down/38 up.

        • Gosh, those are great speeds. Wished I was in your shoes. Unfortunately i live in an old area and that isn't an option! Just checked my address. If only we could all get fibre like you! Only pricey Telstra cable is available for my area!

Telstra is actually having $20/Month off for new customers at the moment

Still not cheap though comparing to what you can get from ADSL.

        • Thanks for the link scotty :) Looked at it but 100GB isn't enough for my family though. We munch through the internet with our videos.

On a side note, $400m NBN deal has been signed last week. So hopefully fibre/cable speeds at more affordable prices for all of us in the coming years!

  • My Archer D7 took my download speed from 1600kbps to 4000kbps on wired system. I am 3200m from exchange. Needless to say I was duly impressed.

Just an update, I got the D7. The signal is VERY strong, penetrable through thick walls. I went from a 14.59Mb/s down to 16.98Mb/s. The speed increase is negligible as predicted by clse945111, Chef-Johnson, but overall I'm still very happy.

  • A new modem is unlikely to make a difference. it's more likely your line quality and distance from the exchange. it might even just be the wiring in your house. you might just try a different phone jack. a long shot but still a possibility maybe if a newer jack was put in some time later.

you're already pushing some of the better DSL speeds ive seen in Australia. The best I think was around 17mbps.

But you could try checking all the technical settings. I signed up with ClubTelco and used the modem they sent me. In the middle of the city I was getting about 8-9mbps out of the box. Unhappy with this i optimised my settings and it jumped to 15-16mbps after a reboot.
