  • I've been looking for media players for a while. But want to spend less than $60. This would be ideal if shipping was free. As anybody got this player or any other recommendation?

    • I have not compared the two units however look at this one

The power pack is fine for australia, it just needs a $1 pin convener.

With the [paypal cashback](http://www.paypal-offers.com.au/shopoverseas/ "paypal cashback") you will only be paying abour $50

the format support isn't as great, this even does mkv

the one thing both are missing is a optical connector

        • It should.

MKV is simply a container format, it just happens that MKV is commonly used for h264 encoded files.
h264 is an mpeg4 codec which is stated as supported.

You can have an avi file with the mkv extension and the codec for the video does not change.

@anthony: You can't assume it supports mkv or h.264, if it did the specs would stipulate so, this is actually a selling point nowadays, so it would be far safer in the absence of evidence to assume it does not! Support for the container and it's commonly used codecs (whilst you are technically correct in that the container may hold other codecs, there is a fair expectation now that mkv will be encoded in h.264) is specific to the chipset of the player, find out what that chipset is and it will probably confirm these formats are not supported!

Seriously Anthony, I dunno if it's just me, but it's really irritating to see when a deal is posted, someone jumps in with an unrealistic comparison to some junk on DX; you guys really need to learn to compare apples to apples mate! ;)

I am pretty sure i have never compared to a DX product before however goblin5566 wanted a cheaper alternative and mkv might not have been important to him (Though as i said, i had not compared the units)
The DX product was not supposed to be an alternative to what was posted rather something for goblin5566 to look at.

@anthony: Fair enough, my bad! You are absolutely correct! Sorry to be a boor, I really misinterpreted the situation!

I'll go to bed now, I'll blame it on the hour but I'm man enough to concede when I've been a dill! ;)

  • Wow this looks nice, even supports more formats than the PS3, it's a shame it doesn't support 1080p but for this price, who cares.

If you have a 1080p MKV, will this play it fine?

    • If you have a 1080p MKV, will this play it fine?

It should play it (who knows how well) however it will not output at 1080P, the max it can send to your tv is 1080i
