New BYO Mobile Plan Keep Existing Number

Hi All,

Further to my post here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/183625 I've decided to get her a new plan at the same time. Currently she is on a Virgin $29 cap plan with $250 calls and 250MB data.

I was looking at the Vaya PowerPlan 18 for $18 with $650 calls and 1.5GB data, but not sure if we can port the number? Also, as far as the network goes how does it compare to Virgin for coverage?

Any other suggestions I may have missed?

Thanks!

  • Vaya uses Optus network, so you'll get good coverage. Yes, you can port in the number to vaya.

Optus has absolutely terrible coverage, especially in doors.

      • I find that it is dependent on the area… I for one have experienced terrible reception with Virgin (optus network) at home and work but fine else where

STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT consider Vaya.
They were OK 2 years ago and many people joined, including many Ozbargainers.

They have a shocking reputation for misbilling, charging for missed payments when it is their fault, and most recently charged an additional $20 "security deposit" with barely a weeks notice.

When you contact them (which is very hard), they are also incapable of fixing payment issues, over billing etc.
Basically if anything goes wrong (usually on their end) you are stuffed.

At $18 per month, it's not cheap compared to Optus which is offering $30 per month, or $20 if you have Optus broadband.
Or look at Telechoice $20 per month on Telstra 3G network,
or other small MVNOs like Jeenee or Spintel.

Optus network is fine for me - if you want try Optus $30 prepaid for a month - you get 1.5 gig of data per month on that

I've been with Vaya - now trying to port out

      Totally agree
      look at the thread here
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/181683

      Or check out Whirlpool

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2369279 (which btw has reached 88 pages in just 2 weeks)

Then if you decide to go ahead with Vaya at least you won't be surprised if you have issues.

BTW they also charge Data in minimum of 1mb per connection which uses up you data faster, so depending on how you use data (small short bursts vs longer) then you may find you only have the same as 1GB offered by other providers who don't charge that way.

      • You can now pay to "upgrade" your service to get kb billing

        • agree but thats now not the $18 plan the OP is discussing. $18 plus the fee. Plus the $20 security deposit

+1 for the Telechoice $20 plan on the Telstra network.

    • One problem with that suggestion is that her phone may not be Telstra Compatible.
OP needs to check that it has 850MHz WCDMA

Scratch that, the Y550 does have 850MHz 3G support.
