  • i called up few days ago to put me on the 90, it didn't state a galaxy tab.

    Should i call back and ask for it?

    • +3

      There are different bundles. The one you probably went for is the $90 entertainment pack has fetch TV with a number of channels, this one doesn't come with all the extra channels. No international calls, no calls to mobile and no speed pack. If you don't need those things call them up and switch to this bundle

    • +1

      This one comes with fetch TV but you only get 30 PRESELECTED movies a month, no channels but you get a galaxy tab.

      The one you might have signed up for came with fetch TV but with channels and no galaxy tab.

      the other one is no fetch, no tab but free international calls and calls to mobile

    • +10

      There are three different bundles at $90.

      A) Internet + phone with unlimited fixed number calls + Fetch TV (just the box, no channels) + Samsung Galaxy Tab
      B) Internet + phone with unlimited Australian calls inc. mobiles + unlimited calls to landlines in 25 countries and mobiles in 7 countries
      C) Internet + phone with unlimited fixed number calls + Fetch TV with over 30 channels

      Just checked which one you signed for ;)

      • Thanks for clearing it up

      • +3

        Plus the $90 cable one (if on cable area), with the fetch entertainment plus international calls:
        http://www.optus.com.au/shop/promotions/superfast-cable-bund…

        • +1

          So this one is like B and C above combined?

        • +2

          @padfoot07:
          Yep, $90 for internet + phone with unlimited Australian calls inc. mobiles + unlimited calls to landlines in 25 countries and mobiles in 7 countries + Fetch TV with 30 channels.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/173745

          I switched to this one a couple of months ago.

        • @Mobe1969:
          Can you elaborate on this one a bit?
          The link shows the deal as expired and although I'm just a minion in this giant Optus machine, I can't seem to find it anywhere? Maybe something you could get by talking to a rep?

        • @unco: Sounds like the best deal of the lot to be honest. I signed up yesterday to that one but I was still a bit confused if the international calls were included or not!!

          The rep I spoke to said he could also change the speed from up to 30mbps to 100mbps so I signed up for it. I'm not sure if that is included in the deal or just something added on by the rep to get me to sign.

        • @Nachotroncoso:

          That link unco pasted is expired, but this one I posted is the same and still active
          http://www.optus.com.au/shop/promotions/superfast-cable-bund…

          When you go to the main $90 page, and you put in a cable ready address, it will show that above link.
          and if you read all the info on the page I linked it says "Offer ends 30 April"

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:
          Completely right, clicked on the wrong link.

          Awesome deal! Thanks for clearing that up :)

        • +1

          @padfoot07: if the speed increase from 30mbps to 100mbps is included would be great. otherwise I think its an extra $20/m.

        • Yeah the link I posted is marked as expired because it had a different ending date originally. It's now been extended until April 30.

          There's plenty of discussion on that bundle in that link which can be helpful.

          I managed to get the 100mbps speed pack included for no charge too but it really is only useful for sites hosted in Australia and I can't notice a difference anyway.
          It's just nice to see the little needle on the speedtest site hit the magical three figures haha.

        • +3

          @venomx2:

          Depending on who you ask there's mass confusion over this part.
          From all the threads on here and Whirlpool and from what I've been told by Optus reps:
          NEW customers get the 100Mbps for free
          Existing customers already getting the 100Mbs will get it for free
          Existing customers wanting to upgrade from standard run at about 60% success getting it for free.

          A lot of it seems to be how well you convince the rep you are positive it comes free or you've been told by an in store rep it was free.

        • @unco: How did you manage to get 100/40 upgrade for free? Are you an existing customer or new sign up? Chat/Phone?Store visit?

        • @phluffed: Tried calling them and tried them on chat, said am a new customer, and asked for the free upgrade to the 100/40 NBN speed, was told I need to pay $20 extra. No free upgrades. :|

        • @shadowarrior:
          I'm not on the NBN connection, I'm on cable connection and got the 100mbps speed pack.
          I was an existing customer that was out of contract and when they said they couldn't give me the speed pack, I said I would explore my options. They then put me through to retention who agreed to the upgrade for free.

          I did it over the phone, others managed to get it done over live chat.

          You can see the comments of this thread here about people's success rate of getting the freebies.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/173745

        • @unco:Ah, yeah I also heard people are having a higher success rate on scoring the 100Mbps connection with cable sign up. Will give that thread a read now. Thanks.

      • I'm currently paying $115 for option B, can I call up and ask them to pay $90 or will they put up a hassle and say it's for new customers only or something?

        • +1

          Yes you can call up and ask to switch to the $90 option, however they will ask you to recontract.
          For me it was a no brainer to save $25 a month since I have been with Optus Cable for 10+ years and don't see myself switching in the next 24 months since speeds are great in my area.

  • +1
  • Similar to the other $90 bundle
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/182260

    But you trade free mobile calls for a tablet?
    And possibly you only get basic FetchTV?

  • +1
    • ever so slightly different

  • +1

    It might be dupe. There are three bundles at $90. You pick the one you like. Maybe it would be good to consolidate everything into one deal?

  • You mean $25 cheaper

    Just saw a flyer in the newspaper, this is now $15 cheaper than the previous deal

  • am currently with Telstra bcoz no else seems to be able to provide internet at my place. wondering if I could get Telstra to price match it to the following bundle.

    "B) Internet + phone with unlimited Australian calls inc. mobiles + unlimited calls to landlines in 25 countries and mobiles in 7 countries"

    Any advice would be much appreciated

    • +2

      Same here, can only get Telstra.

      Doubt they will price-match if you can't get any other ISP connection in your area, worth a try though.

      • was paying $115 for homephone/internet(200GB) + ultimate international calling pack - call to Telstra brought it down to $80. :0)

        • telstra cable or adsl2?

        • any other sweeteners? Im with telstra cable @ $80 p.m and like the look of fetch tv entertainment pack, gonna see if telstra can give us a t-hub with sport channels for a decent price.

        • @rakerr: Neither - Just ADSL. was getting NBN in 6 months before the change in government stuffed us up. Only suburb in Gunghalin, ACT without NBN :0(

        • @thedude23: Didn't ask for anything more as the new deal is close to $35 off what I am currently paying. was not interested in fetch TV type options…

    • Tried price matching this with Tel$tra… I got a call back from a 'specialist' (aussie salesman) who quoted a more expensive price than their basic plans on their website. But as always with large telco's depends who you speak to at the time…

      • +1

        @BigBuddha, Try and get to their disconnection option - 132200 and using the options, get to disconnection specialist, they should offer better plans.

  • Damm, how to check which one did I get?
    The one I need is with unlimited international call.
    But I only ask for $90 bundle.
    So they sign me up and send me a fetch tv box.

    • Sign up for MyOptus and you will be able to check which bundle you have. Faster than this, give them a call 133937 and they might sort out a change of plan for you :)

  • remember - this deal does not include calls to mobiles.

    I don't know about you but I spend about 2 hours a day on mobiles = $$$$

    • You can pay $10 mth extra for unlimited mobile calls

      • How much is a galaxy tab?

        • You can't get one under $400 AFAIK, even grey importers. So if you can use it, or sell it, it offsets the cost a bit.

  • DO these deals require a "Speed pack" to be any good? Currently on a similar deal but stuck @ $115p/m Unlim/Fetch + channels + 30movies + unlim landline/mob calls

    • I'd ask to move to this $90 one then (if the one you are on is cable). Same but $90.

      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/promotions/superfast-cable-bund…

      Without the premium speed pack it is 30Mbps, which is faster than most adsl2 I think.

      • Unfortunately no cable available at the house I've just built. Thanks for the info though, I will call and see if I can change my adsl

        • So you are on ADSL or NBN fibre? If adsl, speed pack isn't available as far as I know.

          At any rate the one you are on I think isn't available then in the $90 deals for non cable. The closest would be the "Entertainment Bundle" for $90. But as someone pointed out, you can add on unlimited mobile for $10 (see Bazenal's post above). So $100 is still cheaper than $115

  • Can somebody explain to me what this means? I found it in the Critical Information Summary for the plan

    "The $19.00 per month tablet repayment fee is waived for the duration of your 24 month plan. If you move to a different rate plan the monthly credits will cease"

    • +3

      Means if you opt to move to another plan in the next 24 months, you have to start paying an extra $19 a month for the tablet for the remainder of the initial contract

  • +1

    Nice plan, can't say I want to get off TPG @ $60 for unlimited though.

    • +1

      How much do you have to pay for line rental and phone though? Whenever I consider moving from cable to adsl I quit as I figure I have to pay for at least line rental, even if I didn't want a a landline. I may be wrong though.

      • I pay the minimum of $25. I have unlimited calls etc on my Mobile so I don't use the landline at all. This is a tempting plan though. But I'm worried my speeds may change a lot. Who knows!

        • Hmm so you are paying $85 per month.

          Can you get cable or NBN fibre? If you can get fibre it'd be a no brainer I'd have thought. If you were adsl, maybe not. Cable, probably.

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:
          Nah I can only get ADSL 1/2 unfortunately. I'll consider this deal if I can get ADSL2 but if I can't then I'm just going to stay with TPG.

        • +1

          @kaneissik:

          If you are on ADSL1, but your address shows up as ADSL2 capable, you may be better off.

          If you go here and plug in your address or phone number it does a rough calculation for you:
          http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/

          So for me it shows 275m from the exchange, 450m cable run, and estimated max speed of 25Mbps. So slower than I get on cable.

        • @Mobe1969:
          I'm currently on ADSL2, I just meant I'm only able to get those two in my area, depending on ISP. Thanks for the website, interesting stuff.

        • +1

          @kaneissik:
          Yeah unless you are "wanting" fetch tv, and MAY use the landline, or are wanting a samsung glaaxy not worth paying an extra $5 a month I guess.

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:
          Yeah, not going to do it. Don't see much value in it. I stream all my TV, already have a tablet and I don't use my landline. Don't want to go through the hassle of disconnecting / connecting up a new service where something may go wrong. Thanks for the comment.

        • +1

          @kaneissik:

          LOL, not to mention if they decide they need a tech on site, so you have to take half a day off work waiting around for them. Damn that is annoying…

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:
          There's just so much crap involved that regardless of the deal is not worth your time, haha.

        • @kaneissik:

          To be honest, if you're on or looking at ADSL2+ then I wouldn't suggest Optus or any ISP using Optus DSLAM ports. There are just too many people suffering the same problem, almost crippling speed drops from 4pm-midnight. If you're really wanting FETCH on ADSL then look at iinet or Dodo (specify use Telstra Port).

        • @phluffed:
          Yeah, I don't think I'll be changing ISPs or plans anytime soon. The $60 TPG unlimited has been fine for me for the past 2 odd years. I've read about the speed drops as well with Optus that made me a little uneasy. I'm not all too concerned about Fetch, I watch everything online anyway. Thanks for the comment.

        • I'm in the same boat as you. I'm on the $60 unlimited ADSL Off-net plan with TPG (can't get ADSL2), get 8mb download speed (1MB), and spend ~$30 on home phone.

          This deal looks fantastic, but I'm worried about signing up and then getting slower speeds at peak times than I get now. If they could guarantee I get 8mb down at all times I'd do it in a heartbeat.

        • @MrFunSocks:
          Yep, absolutely the same mindset as you. It's too risky in my opinion, the connection itself could be delayed by weeks and I might get significantly lower speeds. Totally not worth the risk. Only benefit to the deal is the Tablet, haha.

        • @kaneissik: I'm considering signing up to a month-by-month plan to test it out, only problem is for the first month it costs $155 because of setup fees!

        • @MrFunSocks:
          Setup fees are ridiculous… It's what prevented me signing up to Foxtel, I already have a dish as well!

      • THat $60 included line rental

    • +3

      I was paying $50 for TPG until around mid December when I switched over to optus (had optus installed as soon as my area was rolled so cable under the house had been sitting unused for the better part of a decade and a bit).

      Anyhows, as I was saying, was paying $50 for TPG (old plan) for 500gb spread over peak/non peak. On top of this the $38 or so telstra seems to charge for just line rental, + $18.88 for pennytel unlimited local/interstate and mobile calls (its unlimited until you hit 150 calls or 500 minutes or whatever comes first I believe so not really unlimited)

      This means I was paying $106.88.. I now pay $90 per month and get :

      100mbit download instead of adsl's ~6mbit (and the dropouts when it rains)
      ~1.7mbit upload, instead of whatever adsl feels like at that time of the day (500~800kb)
      Unlimited calls locally, nationally, mobiles and to 25 selected overseas destinations (unlike pennytel)
      Better phone quality as the phone line isn't running back to the exchange
      FetchTV with about 35 or so additional channels of mindless entertainment (just kidding) - Syfy channel is great! —- Does anyone even use TPG Iptv?
      A single bill to pay instead of 3

      So I have to say for me, the move was a no brainer… Optus is not perfect, they throttle torrents during the evening, block port 80 inbound, but all things considered I'm using the internet in new ways I couldn't before and no longer get frustrated with drop outs 3-4 times a day…

      • Wow, you lucked out. I thought the unlimited mobile calls weren't in this package? Unless I read wrong.
        I didn't even know TPG had IPTV, haha!

        Glad you found a great deal, if the NBN was rolled out here I would have picked it up immediately!

    • yeah man those dial up speeds at peaktime so good

      • With TPG? I've not ever had issues of any fluctuating speeds and I've been with them for about 5-6 years. Maybe I'm lucky!

  • I just moved from a Telstra monopolized area. Still on contract with about a year left but don't want to pay out the remaining as it'd be a waste (might as well keep it if I have to pay of the remainder…). Was wondering if anyone has done this before but: Get Optus to pay off the remainder of my contract, and then sign with them for the duration of this contract (preferably, this deal) plus the year they paid off on my Telstra contract for a total of 2 + 1 years. Ideas/thoughts/suggestions?

    I hope they can do something otherwise stuck with Telstra for another year before I can make the switch :(

  • GRRR

    I just signed up for iiNet NBN a few days ago! Hasn't been installed yet - let's see if they'll let me off without a fee

  • WE DO NOT CURRENTLY OFFER OPTUS BROADBAND AT YOUR ADDRESS YET…
    Oh well, if you don't want to …

  • telstra and tpg say NBN isnt available in my area while optus says: Great! You can get connected to Optus Cable

    so what is what?

    i get that response from doing a test at this link, an NBN link, as ive selected that not cable/adsl2+ test link.

    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/nbn/plans-fibre/home-…

    now im getting confused, am i able to get NBN or i cant and its pushing me into Cable???

    kind of deceiving, it should say, oh sorry NBN isnt available blah blah, but you can get etc…

    UPDATE: written in small letters, its says under Great! You can get connected to Optus Cable: Connect to our great Optus Cable plans now and we'll be in touch to upgrade you to NBN once it reaches you…..LOL, geee thanks optus, ill wait at my current ISP.

    • +1

      Optus Cable has been around before there was NBN. It's the optic fibre line that delivers Foxtel (Optus Vision back in the day).

      You'll arguably get better speeds (if not the same) than Liberal's NBN anyway.
      Optus is offering 30mbps (some are getting the free "Premium Speed Pack" upgrade to 100mbps).
      This is available today vs Liberal's NBN promise of 25-100mbps sometime in the future.

      • Thats great, now if someone could just answer me what would my download on cable 100mps be approx.im now with tpg on ADSL2+ and the max speed when im download a file for example is s h showing around 380~420kbps. What speeds could i expect with optus cable at 100mps?

        Thank you.

        • On a speedest you will get 100mbs dl speed. Realistically, depending on source, you could dl a file 500kbs-1.5mbs. Higher if you've got a dedicated source

        • -1

          There's minor difference between Mb/s and MB/s
          b = bits
          B = bytes

          8 bits == 1 byte

          Optus promises up to 100Mb/s which is 100/8 = 12.5 MB/s Obviously real world results will be less.

          Your current TPG is 420KB/s (= 3.36Mb/s) (ADSL2 is up to 24Mb/s)

          Theoretically Optus is capable of 29x your current speed. Not really comparing Apples to Apples here as one is theoretical speed and the other is real world performance.

        • My findings is if you connect to the cable modem using 10/100 connection due to overheads etc you'll hit around ~85mbit download speeds on a speedtest.. Use gigabit connection and it will peak (least in my area) to around 102mbit per sec.

          When you select a victorian server or nsw for steam you get around an average (during the evening) of 6-7megs per second, peaking to around 10-11megs a second off peak..

          Optus's mirror of linux images allows you to download at more or less your full speed unless its a new iso release in which case speed seems slow because their mirror server does not have enough bandwidth to handle the surge.

          Torrents run around 150kb to 200kb in the evenings (legal ones - and their system does not differentiate between legal or illegal torrents - some users use VPN to address that factor and also increase their anonymity) but I've had one torrent from humblebundle peak around 5megs per second.

          Websites generally load faster, youtube hardly buffers, and ping latency on optus for local sites is around 9ms (vs 40's for TPG as TPG routes traffic I believe through their NSW data center).

          If you're really wanting to know how fast your downloads would go I can setup a VM for you to remotely connect to in the evening and see what a 100mbit optus connection (least in my area) is like… Different areas have different levels of congestion so your milage may vary.

        • @tchi6: On steam and downloading from my server o/s I get 10-12.5mb/s. Which is basically the full speed. If you are downloading from a shitty server you will get shitty speeds. YouTube is much better now too.

      • +1

        Well, the hope is that when NBN gets control,m we'll finally have half decent upload limits available. Cable is capable of 30Mbps uploads using current tech. We are deliberately limited to 2Mbps, even on premium. NBN plans do dictate the upload speeds too.

        • Yes that's true

      • Optus' cable internet is not solely delivered using optical fibres, it's rather HFC with RF through coax for last mile coverage.

  • +1

    Currently paying $100 a month for 100/40 1 TB NBN with iinet. Will be $100 to cancel the contract by the looks of it. In return it'd cost $110 a month with Optus NBN for unlimited, I'd get $10 off my optus mobile and a free samsung tablet. Hmm wonder if I can be bothered changing now

    • always a tough call going from iinet to Optus.

      I know i changed the other way years ago and never looked back.

      You pay extra for the pleasure though.

    • +2

      100 down 40 up? and 1TB data? I'd be hard pressed justifying moving from that. You'd only get 25/5 on the optus plan without paying the extra $20 for the supersonic 100/40 pack. And then you need to think if you'd need more than 1TB data. If you could use the tablet and a PVR, it might be worth it.

  • I just change to $90 plan few days ago. but just contact optus today if I can change to this plan as I'm not use the home phone and tv. Samsung tablet is better but they said if I change, they will not give me the premium speed pack. I have to pay $20.

    • I got told by the online chat they would give it to me for free and they honored it when i phoned

  • +1

    If they guys could get SPORT (AFL) they'd have a new customer, but for obvious reasons they can't. The TV channel selection is pretty piss poor. Internet, phone and free tab all unlimited is otherwise brilliant.

    • What online options are there for sports fans in general for non-cable tv are there? You'd have thought now that there would be better options than foxtel

      • Well, in the 30 channels you get with the Entertainment package, you get ESPN. UEFA Champions League FTW!!!!

        • Yeah but at NTSC or sub-ntsc resolution, which is an utter insult in the 21st century. In this day and age I can't understand why there aren't real options. I mean for TV shows and movies there are things like netflix, stan, and all these others if you go overseas. But for sports, I can't really see anything.

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:
          Might be. But according to comments from this thread, ESPN is one of the channels that looks best. I'll have a more informed opinion once my Fetch TV box arrives.

          Anyway. I'm in the same place as you. I was super excited when I heard the news that BeIn Sports was coming to Australia, now super dissapointed that it is just Setanta re-branded.

        • Soccer? No thanks, that would bore me to death. Theres GOALS in the AFL…much more than 2!

  • I'm currently paying $60 a month for Exetel for unlimited ADSL2+ w/ line rental since I can't get cable or NBN. Is it still worth changing to Optus ADSL2+ or would my internet speed still be the same?

  • +1

    For anyone who signed up to this plan, did you receive the Samsung tablet and Fetch TV at the same time or were they in separate packages?

  • I signed up to this, they told me i would get 30 new release movies to watch a month from what Optus pick… i get 30 movies from the 80 that i have never heard of before.

    Few other issues I've had with them, it's just been a bit of a hassle dealing with uninformative reps.

  • This is an incredible deal, and to think i didnt sign for $110 because of house renovations last month

  • Thanks OP, recontracted my account on this offer and got them to throw in a set of powerline adapters free also

  • Has anyone received the fetch tv box and samsung tablet yet?
