  • good price for an average phone (i have one)

the 4G/LTE doesnt work. I have to turn it off and use 3G…. also battery life is not the best. not bad but not great

    • I just bought one of these. While the 4g works ok, the whole phone will lose network connection 2/3 times a day and will only work again if i restart. Proving EXTREMELY annoying when you dont realise its happened and you end up with 10 voicemails from Clients.

      Anyone got any ideas?

Sell the phone and buy another. I'm serious.

Poor network reception is a known issue that is currently plaguing the Alpha series. It's probably due to an antenna design.

        • I've only had it 2 days! I did some google searches but didnt find much on the issue. Could be an antenna hardware issue similar to what happened with the Iphone?

          @cureforanitch:

Yeah, a lot of complaints surfaced on XDA.

The workaround is to switch to GSM only mode but you will obviously be turning off the 4G — so no fast broadband, but at least you will not drop out of the network.

The issue is with Samsung's new metallic design, because the problem also appears on their new midrange Galaxy A series
          http://pocketnow.com/2014/11/11/samsung-signal-strength

          Quote:

a smartphone manufacturer comes out with a new metal-rimmed handset, only for users to quickly start complaining about poor signal strength and dropped calls. Samsung’s new Galaxy A-series was already sure drawing a few iPhone comparisons, and now it looks like the family may have found an antennagate of its own, as tests show lower-than-expected reception quality on both the Galaxy A3 and A5.

Edit: return the phone and exchange it for another model while it's still new.

          @cureforanitch:

If you bought it locally (and can), then return it. Not fit for purpose.

        • Just been brushing up on the DSE returns policy. It looks like its going to be tricky asking for a refund as it seems I will need to prove that the item is faulty.

They dont accept returns if you "change your mind"

          @cureforanitch:

You havent changed your mind. From your own post, your phone loses network connection 2 - 3 times a day, needing a restart.

Yeh i got an idea… Sell it and get an Iphone 6!

        • +3

He wants to fix their "one" problems not create many more.

        • +1

they didnt say it was that bad they wanted to downgrade!

          :)

Wow a lot of android fan boys in the house

        • +1

@Gavman: as I've always said I buy what's best and ever since Galaxy s1 that hasn't been iPhone.

        • insert care factor here —->>> [ ]

    • cant you return it then, that means its faulty or not fit for purpose/not whats advertised?

  • +6

the name says it all, Alpha, Beta, etc like trial products ~_~

    • Doesn't Alpha imply that if you complain about it, Samsung will give you a wedgy, and shove your head in a toilet?

      • would cost them to do that, first with tools shipment fee, then with labour cost for doing that 'give you a wedge, and shove your head in a toilet?' etc - Samsung losing market share last quarter, don't think they can afford ;)

  • +2

was thinking of buying one tomorrow but you guys completely changed my mind. Well.. I've to keep using Lumia 530 on Telstra.
Any one know how to unlock Lumia 530 the cheap way?

    • +2

Always research online for any device your thinking about getting. it will save you lots of trouble otherwise.

      • I agree with that statement, but it's not always that easy in regards to Aus model vs other versons in other countries and even with our mobile providers.
Also most issues with a product doesn't show up straight away or reported quick enough before people buy them.

I have been stung like this with 2 motorbikes, a 99 Yammy R6 which had a bad issue with its 2-3 gear changes, that wasn't a cheap fix either and last is a issue I'm having right now with my KTM 690 Duke R (2010) with its stalling issue.

Key info on faults can be easy to miss sometimes or come too late.

  • HTC m8 could be the alternative to this one.

    • +2

trust me who owned one before, the HTC One M8 blows this 'trial' away, I mean, far far away :)

      • HTC M8 was my phone before this. I downgraded coz I liked the smaller size of the Alpha. But the M8 definitely better phone in all other aspects.

  • I've had this phone for a few months now, apart from 4G issue which requires you to use GSM. I think its a pretty good phone. But I use my pocket wifi so its not an problem for me.

  • z3 compact is so much better. the battery life on that one is literally double this phone….

    • That's the phone I wanted, but it's lame 16gb capacity thru me off big time.

      • i think it has SD card support. I personally rarely never use more than 8GB on a phone.

Has anyone successfully returned their Alphas? Mine is currently "being repaired" by Samsung and the last time I was in their repair shop, their solution was to take the phone to Telstra (who don't sell the phone) and ask them to fix the reception problem.

I took my phone back to JB Hifi and they said take it to Samsung for repair.

*** Please for anyone thinking about buying this POS, please don't!!!!!

    • Have you had any luck with the Samsung repair?

      • Samsung rang me back and offered to change the motherboard and I said it had already been replaced so whats the point. They sent out a different phone and it does the same thing.

I have emailed ACCC last week but never heard anything back.

Looks like I will be selling it on ebay. Least I can say its brand new rather than used.

    Poo 😦

  • $499 for the 16GB LG G3 @ Mobileciti - For another $60ish more, much better phone and choice.

  • I have this phone that I got from TGG promo with the free watch, which has been delayed til the end of Feb instead of early Feb.

I have noticed a slight weakness on its strength of reception, but I also didn't have that strong of reception with my previous phone (a small Sony X10 pro) with Optus.

I don't use my mobile much but will keep a eye on this issue.
This is a shame, might have to fog mine off on ebay, but then what do I buy instead?

    • +1

Moto G gen2 is a good value device. The 3rd gen is coming out soon though with a bigger battery.

    • I have barely done much with it so far, still haven't set up email or any other accounts or services on it yet.
If I do sell it soon, the new mobile must have 32Gb at least and a micro SD slot and a compact size.

So not sure yet how bad this is a issue on my phone or if it really is on my phone.

Is there any app that can tell me reliably what its signal strength is?
or is this somewhere on my phone?, I'm still pretty new to current Android versions. As I'm still using honeycomb on my tablet (Acer A501) and ginger bead on my old phone.

      • +1

        On Android go to
        Settings
        About
        Status
… Then look at the Signal Strength

        • +1

          On some phones it's

Settings => About Phone => Network -> Signal Strength

Or you can use an app.

  • Aside from the bad 4G reception which doesn't matter to me as I'm with Telechoice who are Telstra 3G only anyway, how do you find the battery life on the Alpha those that have them?

    • +1

battery life isnt great, but that's due to the small size of the battery. gives me around 8-10 hours of moderate use.

usually phone is on low battery by the end of work day.

  • Galaxy s6 coming out in a month. Probably have the same problems as this thing.

  • As per the Iphone 4 signal strength issue, would a case not help improve reception? Or is this signal strength issue different?

    • +1

ive got a case. doesnt help. interestingly it gets better after a phone reset. so could potentially be software issue
