I don't personally need anything of this capacity (yet), but this is an awesome price for a performance SD card.

On a side note, you gotta love how they state "Stores approximately 91,050 photos", that's like saying a fridge can store 27 bottles.

    • +25

I'm still waiting for a card that can store 92,000 photos.

    • Once it fails, you lost 90k photos. I will prefer multi 64gb card for photo shooting.

      • A complete and proper backup system should be in place when dealing with anything we'd prefer to not lose. 2 x NAS and 1 offsite storage protects me :)

        • Slight problem arises when you're overseas for a month and can't access that external storage ;)

        • +1

@jzdhgkd: bring a laptop/tablet with you and/or external HDD and transfer it to that.

        • @jzdhgkd:

That's where the cloud comes in silly ;)

(or portable external storage if you require large volumes on the fly)

        • +4

          @Click_It:

yeah sure I'll upload 40gb of images to dropbox via 3g

        • @jzdhgkd: if you use Android a usb otg hub and external hdd would do the trick.

        • @atlas:

I feel that if you've got the facilities to access an external HDD then you may as well save the money and get a single 64gb card rather than something so huge! Unless of course you're one of the types to fill a 256gb card in a single day of shooting (which is fair enough these days with 4K recording and whatnot)

        • @storyteller:

Fair call, but it's not too hard (or expensive) to pack a 1TB 2.5" HDD nowadays. Maybe need adapters depending on what other hardware you have but yeah not difficult anymore.

  • Great price!

I use the PNY 64GB 90mbs cards and they work flawlessly with my a7s

How would this go in a MBP if I used it like a secondary SSD for file storage?

    Cheers,

    Guangping

    • +3

Should work well in Mac. If it doesn't, just update the software in Mac according to the first comment on Amazon.

      • How does the speed compare to that of an internal SSD?

        Cheers,

        Guangping

        • +6

Nowhere near the full speed of a SDD. Would be more suitable for storage of data rather than applications.

        • +3

Note that most modern MacBooks can't accept fullsize SD cards without it sticking out a bit. If you want semi-permanent storage, I'd get a micro SD with something like a Nifty Minidrive so it sits flush.

        • @Strand0410:
Good call. The same applies for various laptops or ultrabooks, they all differ in this area. SD card sits nice and flush in the HP Chromebook 14, but need micro with one of those adaptors for ultrabook I have. Note that most of those Macbook micro adaptors so far only seem to support up to 64 GB, but have not tested a 128 GB yet myself.

Not sure what I am I going to fill this much storage. Till now I am happy with Samsung 64gb sd care from pc byte. But a plus for the deal, someone may find it helpful.

  • +9

A 256GB SD card is like science fiction to me. I still remember buying 128MB and 256MB memory sticks…

    • +10

Mate, I remember using 1.44Mb floppy discs and how excited everyone at school was when we got a heap of computers with a WHOPPING 1Gb of HDD memory….
      How times have changed…

      • I also remember floppy and zip disks, but flash cards feel so much more poignant because it seems almost yesterday I was buying cards at 1/1000th the storage capacity…

      • +2

Yeah remember 360k floppies? Apparently SD cards have theoretical maximum of 2tb..

    • +2

This is nothing. Just give it another 10 years and we'll have 256TB ???? cards at this price.

      • We dont need to give it another 10 Years 2 Year back they already have created 2TB microsd Cards and Tested it and ready for production but because of Alot of Business Conns Reserchers and Developers are not able to produce them comercially.

Reason is they already have made millions and billions of cards with lower capacity first they want to exhaust these cards in the markets.

Once their inventory all gone then they start chain of next cards with bigger capacity.

        See the link below.

        http://www.wired.com/2009/01/two-terabyte-sd/

End losers are either buyers or small business who buys lower capacity and then within months such bigger capacity comes in market with allmost same price or slightly higher first and then comes down.

Bigger players gets the insider information early so they get the buffer time to clear off the old stock.

In this situation i find myself fool and played by others.

        • I said mass produced 256TB cards for consumers under $100.

Also I just searched Amazon and staticice and I don't see any consumer 2TB micro sd cards. What's the RRP on those? I doubt they'll be under $100. It'll probably still be another few years to get to that price point.

LG G3 is already have inbuild system support for 2TB sd card, go figure we really need 10 years or may year and half before we carrying 256 TB cards in our pockets.

    • +2

I remember a futuristic movie called Johnny Mnemonic starring Keanu reeves, where couriers transport large amounts of data for delivery.. in their heads.

Keanu's capacity was 80GB, but he overloaded it to 160GB, and it was killing him. If he didn't offload it quick he'd die, because his brain wasn't meant to store this much.

Who'd have guessed that some day you could fit even more than that on a tiny little card, without any risk to your brain?

Mind you, the movie was made when a 2GB HDD was considered big. But this was the future with laser whip weaponry (like a lightsaber).

  • +1

256GB sd card is just giving me an excuse not to extract and back up my photos and videos haha. Yes i procrastinate.

  • +2

Wow thats a lot of photos to lose :/
Be sort of, good storage for a laptop if you can trust a sd card.

    • How big is your PC's hard drive? I have concerns about this with 2TB HDDs.

      • +2

Well.. if you dropped your laptop, the HDD might not survive but the SD card would. :)

  • +1

Wow. Changing my backup scheme. No need for online backup of photos. Buy. Store. Photo and video backups that fit in ur wallet and doesnt need internet access to use. Fantastic.

  • so full sd has more capacity than micro sd?

    • +2

well you can fit 2 128gb micro sd's in the footprint of full sized sd cards…

  • Does anyone know if this would be okay with a GoPro 4 @ 1080p 60fps?

    • +2

Really? Sure once you cut a bigger slot in the go pro

      • lel

well in defense, you can get a micro sd to full size sd ribbon.

      • +1

Haha… it's too late and I've had too many beers.

        • Water is healthier ;)

        • @Samantha93:

          And more importantly…cheaper

        • +4

          @bargainsniper:

Well until someone makes alcoholic water that tastes like beer, people will continue to drink beer ;)

        • +1

eww. I haven't drunk beer in 20 years. I went to lunch the other day with a couple of guys who drank beer and the smell was gross. Reminded me of when I was a kid and forced myself to drink the disgusting stuff coz everyone else did. Got used to it and make a mess of myself for a few years till I came to my senses. :)
Each to his own I guess.
Oh, but I remember how delicious water tasted after poisoning myself on booze all night.

  • Any deal on 32gb cards?

    • -1

Sorry bro, this is ozbargain, we discuss bargain that actually exists, not creating bargains :)

      • Btw, about the 'bro', why do I presume that ozbargain-ers are blokes?

  • Is PNY a reliable brand? Is it comparable to Sandisk and Samsung etc.I dont want to pay 100 dollars plus and stuff it with 256 GB of home photos and videos and then have it die on me 1 year later.

  • Anyone know how these compare in speed to the Samsung Pro SD cards?

  • Definitely bargain considering size and price. Not sure about quality and performance.

  • +1

    Tempting.
    http://m.thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-sd-card/

Search for what they say. Smaller capacity tested but still valid.
I think I'll pass and keep waiting for a SanDisk Extreme Pro deal!

  • Another price drop today down to 79.99 USD.
