Full details here & here.

There are several differences between the free version of Google Earth and Google Earth Pro. The free version of Google Earth lets you print screen resolution images, whereas Google Earth Pro offers premium high resolution photos. The free version of Google Earth requires you to manually geo-locate geographic information system (GIS) images, but Google Earth Pro helps you automatically find them. And the free version of Google Earth only allows you to import image files that are up to a max texture size, but Google Earth Pro offers Super Image Overlays that are more than the max texture size.

Google Earth Pro uses the same imagery as the free version of Google Earth. However, Google Earth Pro offers additional tools designed for business users like the ability to create animation movies and an option to set up measuring areas of polygons or circles. Google Earth Pro also lets you map multiple points at once and lets you access demographic, graphic and traffic data layers.

  • It says free trial in the link but it seems to work fine in the program.

    • Yep. It went free ~ 30 Jan 2015.

The Trial you mentioned seems to be for an Enhanced version [of Pro?].

The now free version of Google Earth Pro seems to be from 2013.

(Can anyone tell us what Pro adds to non-Pro ver of Google Earth?)

  • Any reason to NOT go Pro?

Any reason to NOT go Pro?

Not everyone enjoys shaky video footage.

  • Got the email with no mentions of a trial. On my phone so can't test it but will report back later if it's only a trial.

Also, please tell me I wasn't the only one who put in OzBargain in the company field??????

      Industry: Not for profit.

  • I read that as a free trial in the URL.

  • I already had a trial account, granted me a 2 yr license. Download pro from https://support.google.com/earth/answer/176155?hl=en&ref_top…

  • I don't notice any major feature differences with this pro version. My location still has the same old crappy satellite image resolution.

if you're in nsw, try https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/

      • The only thing I hate about SIX Maps is how it shows you nothing if you zoom in too much. Wish it could just show you a pixelated version instead.

        • there is a six maps extension for google earth. uses same imagery and access to all the six maps layers. replaces google imagery for NSW but within GE. Will see if I can find it again…

        • @hornoscous:

I recently added nearmaps to GE so I've been using that. Although it annoyingly flickers between GE and nearmaps when I zoom, probably due to my slow net.

        • Can do a screen print and zoom in on that leonheart11.

exercise is good for ya :-)

It has different licence permissions, to do with commercial use. I believe it also lets you extract at higher resolution. I think it's free now because their GME product crashed and burned after they mistakenly believed they could deliver Enterprise Geospatial solutions. So they no longer see that industry as strategically relevant now that they made a good attempt at killing it off. Sorry, too much detail :)

      • +1

        Sorry, too much detail

Can't say that for the imagery!

    • looks like the maps are atleast 4 years old!

      • +1

Yep atleast, built my house 3 years ago, empty land on the map lol

        • +4

Haha, I work for a local rural council and the community comment on that all the time when they come in with a planning enquiry - "Oh look, that house/shed/tree on the aerial image isn't there any more!" (It begs the question: did you get a planning permit to remove the tree? But that's a can of worms so I turn a blind eye… don't want to make more work for myself hehe!)

Councils can only afford to pay for the aerial photography every few years, and we have joint ventures with other authorities (usually water catchment authorities) to cut costs - I've heard it costs around $100,000 to take the entire Shire. The latest aerial images we have are from 2011… but they've scheduled an update in the council budget for updated imagery this year.

        • click the Historical Imagery icon on the toolbar. Shaped like a clock and 7th from left. You may be able to get later maps but maybe not Street View.

    • +1

It allows you to open GIS tables directly like Mapinfo/Arc as well as creating the polygon in 3D like a graph on a map based on column values.

  • Thanks. Works like a charm!

  • great find!

  • why i can not open it, said the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed. anyone know how to solve it, thanks

    • I have this problem too, on my macbook.

Works for me, but really old imagery, must be 5+ years old. Build of Earth Pro was 10/07/2013 so looks like long forgotten

  • +6

The OP is a legend! Google Maps Pro lets you record to a video file your flythoughts (I use this to edit into home movies of our trips so you can see where we go etc). I've tried over the years to get a free or reduced cost version for home use but with no luck so I used to use Google Maps and just record what was on the screen but it is pretty poor quality. Pro lets you create high res movies.

  • Cheers OP!!

  • Cheers OP

  • Thanks TA, installed fine and working well.

  • Looks like they've blocked it. My registration failed

    • Mine did at first as well, I waited 5 minutes and used the same email address and it worked.
Try a different email address if it fails.

  • Worked for me:

  • Still not really clear on the differences between the Standard and the Pro… but hey now I have Pro so who cares.
    Cheers

  • +3

Thanks TA, I have PRO installed now and registered successfully.

Not sure if I even needed it, but I gave up on that mentality a long time ago here on OzBargain ;).

  • Up and running, thanks go to OP!

  • Thanks TA for the heads up. will install when I am on desktop.

  • +1

For those asking what the value of Pro is over the regular free version…

The main benefit for someone like me is the ability to import your own table data in and create polygon shapefile layers. This means I can make choropleth maps like this.

Given that GIS tools are prohibitively expensive for the home user, this is great news. I'll be very interested to see what happens with the competitors such as cartodb, mapinfo, arcgis given their exorbitant charging regime.

  • Worked well for me just now, awesome!

  • That is just sad… I used all my real details including business and it didnt work.
Why does the fake users work?

  • Please try only 1 user.

Looks like the janitor at Max Power Pty Ltd has got himself some new software.

  • I'm not really sure why do I need this.. but hey it's free
