Lenovo G50-70 is the online version of B50-70 (retail version), which makes it similar to this deal. Use coupon code G50STAFF to get $200 off i3, $300 off i5 and $400 off i7. So the top of the range G50-70 i7 comes down to $799 delivered which has

  • Core i7-4510U
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1TB HDD
  • AMD Radeon R5 M230 2GB

$70 more expensive than B50-70 pickup, but has double the memory, double the disk space and has a dedicated GPU, but slower wireless. There's also an extra $1 offer to get Dual Mode WL Touch Mouse N700 (honestly it doesn't look very comfortable). Also note that R5 M320 is just an entry level GPU, comparable to maybe just GeForce 820m, i.e. slightly better than IGA but will still struggle with most recent games.

  • battery life doesn't look too good.

It states 4 hours, so in reality, you'd be lucky to get 3.

Do these things come with a SSD option ?

    • Easy to spot how fast this will go - as fast as the 5400 disk drive!

How is this Nvidia GT840, 8Gb ram 1034.70 delivered

    • +2

You can add the docking station for $1 for this model

    • +1

Honestly what is the difference between the Lenovo G50-70 $799 vs the Edge 540 series $999?

the price difference is about 200 dollars difference, but the specs are about the same?

      • G50-70 is not under the ThinkPad brand so not designed to be business oriented. E540 also has better GPU (GT 840M).

Hi Scotty, thanks any deal on lenovo yoga..

      same question here…
The new dell xps looks quite decent.
      $1.7k 5th gen i7 8g 256ssd etc
Also dse is having a sale on Asus.

    • Their Australia Day coupon (now expired) covered ThinkPad Yoga but not Yoga Pro 3. They usually don't discount their latest models unless a few months after releases.

  • +1

    bummer if the i5 or i7 had 1080p lcd's id gotten 1…

  • Honestly, why bother having an i7 with an entry level GPU.

    • +3

the reason is not everyone uses a laptop to play games. (but i do, and do with a mbp)

    • +6

      Business machine, not gaming machine.

    • For me, I only care about processor, RAM, storage with SSD and built quality. I don't really care about screen resolution or other stuffs, since I only use my laptop for work. I have used thinkpad for almost 10 years and have no complaints about their product, but I only trust their L, T, W and X series.

    • Yeah the Intel integrated graphics are good enough these days that having a very low end discrete GPU makes no sense. I would rather have no discrete GPU at all and have a cheaper/lighter laptop with better battery life. Or if it's going to be used for gaming then you will need a mid range GPU.

    • Why pay for a gpu if you don't require it. This may amaze you but there's actually people that purchase computers for things other than playing games.

  • +1

Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't have Gigabit LAN (only 10/100). An i7 CPU, and other good specs, yet they won't spend a few more dollars to equip it with GBe. Even my old Asus motherboard over 10 years old has GBe.
    Lenovo isn't getting my money.

    • Typo?

      • Nope.

  • bought a lenovo tiny m53 last month and it sh4t itself already… took 2 wks to organise refund. will never buy a lenovo in my life…

make sure lenivk have addressed the USB 3 not working in ANY if that laptops if you upgrade to an ssd or do a vlean install yourself. the windows 8.1 USB 3 driver doesn't work. (I own a g50)

    • +1

I have no problem with my X230T. all USB 3.0 ports work fine after upgrade to 8.1
That's why I never trust other series except L,T,W and X

      • -1

its common across all. I have e series and x series and both have the problem too but only with win 8 hence ive stayed on 7.

        • -1

          not for me :)
I'm very happy with 8.1 and never look back to 7 anymore

        • @dhie20:
X230t here too and USB works fine with 8.1 and an ssd! Dunno what they are doing wrong.

Aren't we all supposed to pretend to be pissed off at Lenovo due to that pricing error they didn't honour a while back?

    • +2

The sheep get over things very quick.

And you got 3 negs for saying the truth.

        I took one off.

        • +1

Thanks mate. I bought a Lenovo x60 for $50 yesterday from ebay. I still love the Thinkpads just wouldn't buy them directly from Le-boso.

  • A tip for anyone buying from Lenovo's online store: call them up and ask them to expedite the process.
I did it when I bought my ThinkPad, because I was traveling overseas in a couple weeks. Called them up, and even with all the fancy customisations and upgrades I'd stuck onto it, I still got it within four days.

    • Might backfire and delay the process because they relay the message off to China where the laptops are shipped and the messages might get stuck somewhere and not attended to.

      • I called up twice, just to be sure. I think their call centre operations are in Malaysia?
The first time, the customer service person said she'd mark the order as urgent. The second time I called (the next day, basically), a different guy said it had already been moved to the front of the orders list.

I imagine it might be different if you just buy a standard model where they can just pull it off the shelf. But if you're customising your laptop at all, it does seem worthwhile to give them a call and sneak ahead the backlog.

  • Advice please. Don't know a lot about computers. Just signed up for optus cable which apparently is 100mbps. Hasn't been installed yet but want a laptop for fast Internet browsing, watching live football streaming and the odd movie download. Also want to be able to plug it into the TV to watch streaming and move downloads. Don't play games at all. Wanted to spend up to $1000 or will I get major benefits spending a bit more? Are the apples suitable? Cheers TIA

    • +1

if you only need for internet and movies streaming/download, chromebook is more than enough, or you can get basic laptop for only $300-ish. Get chromecast to stream everything from your laptop/phone to your TV and forget about nasty cables. Get a decent wireless modem with dual band channel (AC is better). Also get decent NAS with DLNA support to store all your movies/musics. You don't need full HD screen if you want to put everything on your big screen TV. Unless if you want to use the laptop for playing recent games, image processing or some heavy computation stuffs, you won't get any benefits from expensive laptops.

      • Cheers, thanks Dhie20. I don't even know what a NAS and DLNA are?

        • +2

NAS is an external harddrive that is connected to the router instead of PC/laptop. You can play the movies in it directly from your smart TV/phones/bluray player/game console if your NAS has DLNA service. It's just like your own private youtube server in your home. There are plenty of NAS bargain in here. You can also ask in the forum which brand you should choose based on their experiences.

in short, to build your own media server you will need:

          1. Chromecast to put everything in your TV wirelessly.
          2. Dual Band wireless modem-router, so you can do multiple streaming at the same time without interrupting each other (assumed you have multiple devices)
          3. NAS with DLNA
          4. decent mobile/tablet/laptop that can be used to choose the movie and stream it into chromecast
          5. Bluray/game console to play the movie from NAS directly to the TV

          hope this help

        • @dhie20: thanks again

  • I would rather pay a little more and have something like this: Acer Aspire E5-571G-54T8 Win 8.1 64bit/Core i5-5200U/4GB DDR3/1TB HDD/DVDSM/15.6" HD Widescreen/NVIDIA Geforce 840M 2GB/BT/WIFI(AC)/HD Webcam/1 Yr WTY (NX.MLZSA.002-C77)

    $824 at http://cplonline.com.au/index.php/acer-aspire-e5-571g-54t8-w…

This has a faster GT840M graphics chip and a newer Broadwell CPU which should result in better battery life.

  • Guys I'm thinking of buying the i5 model… Any thoughts?? How does this one perform compared to the previous jb hi Fi i5 model?(S50-B04Y)

    • nvm. bought.

i5 4th gen, 2gb graphics card(even though it's entry level), 500gb hardrive, 15.6" HD screen, and a very simple and decent looking design for $599 was a pretty good deal for me. I needed a new laptop anyway. I just hope that it will last me for at least 2 years.

      knock on wood.

  • Anyone concerned with the slower wireless?

    Is this acer better?
For normal use such as internet, you tube, Skype

Or get lenovo i3 for long term or reliability?

    • +2

For Internet, YouTube, Skype etc the above Acer should be fine — at least for the content / websites today. Celeron N2840 is actually an Atom CPU that's much slower than the i3 here. Not sure about reliability though.

      • thanks

  • I wouldn't buy lenovo ever again. if it breaks, there is no support.
Any time you look at their facebook there are a bunch people venting their anger about their non-existent after sale support.
    you have been warned.

    • Chinese investment company running Lenovo if not mistaken .

  • Founded in 1984 in a guard shack in Beijing, Lenovo grew to become China's leading PC company - in 2013, Lenovo becomes the world's #1 PC company.

    • +1

at the expense of its' unsuspecting customers. and dragging the name of products like IBM thinkpads to the ground.

      • Lennyovo used to be a good brand. I own an x60 and a T60 I purchased off ebay for around $50 each and they are great machines from circa 2006 Thinkpad era. Just buy the older units and stay away from their new products and awful customer support. Lenovo 'yoga' - wtf please? Going down the crapper with this company.
