LCD TV damaged by lightning. Repair or replace?

Hi guys, a freak lightning storm in the middle of the night fried our modem and our TV. Our TV is nothing high end…just a 42" LG FHD LCD TV..no 3D and no Smart features..But we are still enjoying the TV after 2.5 years so it is sad to see it fried. No extended warranty however.

I am wondering if it is worthwhile for me to pursue getting the TV repair (yet to get quotation) or should I just replace the TV. If any of you guys have your TV repaired after being damaged by lightning surges, I am keen to know what sort of ballpark figures I should be looking at.

As the TV is plugged into a belkin powerboard which claim to have good protection against lightning, I am also looking to submit a claim to Belkin to recover some cost to the item…but the Belkin's website is asking me to send them the belkin powerboard before they can assess the claim..I am also wondering if this is something they do to brush customers away from making claims?

Any thoughts?

Cheers

U sound like u have tried this before or am I getting ahead of myself…..

What is your previous experience if I may ask…if they are hopeless to deal with I won't want to waste my time either

  • if you have insurance and the tv was plugged in to the belkin surge board, then i would make an insurance claim. otherwise, just buy a new one. i don't think cheap tvs are economical to repair nowadays

  • Same thing happened to me, TV was $650 to repair (covered by NRMA)

wow. Repairing a tv cost $650. Might as well just buy a new one….

    • Yep that was for a system board replacement.

      $88 assessment fee
$500 odd for the part and the rest was labour.

Some powerboards with surge protection usually comes with equipment warranty. Belkin's products do come with that.

Get a new one. Repairing a 2.5 year old unit doesn't guarantee it will last.

  • I would definitely recommend against repair.
The lighting, if it fried at least part of the TV would also cause latent damage to the rest.
You would set yourself up for further repairs down the road which nobody would cover.

  • If you have insurance check your policy. You may be covered for fusion.

  • Thanks guys. We have decided to just buy a new TV. Am going to also pursue the Belkin warranty claim thingy and see where this leads to. Nothing to lose. Cheers.

  • the best thing about LG is parts are really cheap, replacement power board (back when i worked for a warranty agent) cost sub $50. so depending on how much damage was done it could be rather cheap to fix
