  • Can these run Plex?

    • Yes there is a Plex client - I use the RNDU2000 (now replaced by RN31200 - virtually identical - I flashed its OS6 firmware onto mine) as my Plex server.

Not grunty for transcoding but if your phones/tablets/media centers can play 1080p then no need to transcode much.

      • +1

I think it would be what format the clients can play rather than the resolution of the output which would determine if you require transcoding.

I dont know about the 100 series, but the 300 SMB series starting at $259 have Intel Atom CPU's so you can install far, far superior Synology OS.

Either as a virtual OS (so ReadyNAS OS6 is still in the background) via VBOX
    http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=70226&sid…

Or you can overwrite the internal flash memory with an XPEnology boot image, and boot straight into Synology.

Just stay with v5.0 or lower - not 5.1 as it has some issues on 3rd party devices.

    • Where at for the $259 starting price?

      • Second item in this deal

    • does that mean the netgear nas has all the Synology functions like SHR?

      • Im not sure - Ive only run 2x 2TB disks mirrored or a single 3TB disk in mine.
It seems like an OS feature, not hardware based, so it may work.

        • have you tried running as a boot image?

        • @venomx2:
So far Ive only booted Synology via USB (technically XPEnology is on the bootable USB stick, and Synology is installed on the NAS HDD)

But I have taken a snapshot of the internal Netgear OS6 flash memory (in case I ever want it back), ready to overwrite the internal flash memory with XPEnology so I can do away with the USB stick, once Ive backed everything up.

    • Just confirmed, my 104 has an ARM cpu, I presume the entire line does.

      root@nas:~# cat /proc/cpuinfo
      Processor : Marvell PJ4Bv7 Processor rev 1 (v7l)

Haven't heard great things about Seagate HDDs, nor a good experience myself. Would buy in a second if they were Western Digital Reds

    • +1

Yeah I've had more probably twice as many Western Digital to Seagate hard drives over the past 10 years …. yet every single one of the Seagate drives has had to be RMA'd and not one Western Digital drive (had 3/4 Seagate 3TB drives start to fail around the same time in a NAS too :( that was the last straw)

  • Anyone know if I can straight-swap 4x HDDs from my ReadyNAS NV+ to a new RN10400-100AJS?
    Without, er, losing my files?

    • +1

Unfortunately not. You can not take drives across architectures.

I have the NV+ too and am looking for a replacement as it seems my PSU is failing (won't always turn back on) and have done a fair bit of looking about migrating data.

      • Thanks comphelp for the comp help. I shall therefore go via my backups.

        • They suggest doing a backup job from 1 NAS to the other (i.e. over the LAN).

        • @comphelp: but I only have the 4 drives :-(

  • So this looks tempting. Anyone know if I could replace my current WDTV and Mybook Live setup with a single 31200 ready nas running plex?
I'm looking for more space (bigger drive) and better writing speed. Thanks!

  • Does the Asus DSL-N12E have an AP mode?

Would like something to extend a wireless network via cat5 connection from an EOP?

    thanks

  • I've been pretty happy with my 102 since getting it the last time it was going for around the same price.

One thing I really don't like is that it needs a drive inside of it just to turn on/setup the config, it can't be used with external drives only. I had to get a new drive also as it needs to be in ext file system and all my external drives are NTFS/exFAT, so I couldn't even deshell one to get it up and running.

So now I have a unused freshly formatted ext 3tb in there, just so I can access my 8tb of external drives connected via USB.

  • Oh god, that 34" monitor. I have to check that out, it looks awesome!

  • What is the ASUS DSL-N12E like? Is it a good reliable router?

  • Netgear NAS series
    RN10200-100 2Bay 99 145
    RN31200-100AJS 2Bay 259 315

What's the diff between these two NAS?

    • The main points are that the more expensive one has faster write speeds (almost double), faster CPU and can be hooked directly to a TV/monitor and play files off the device rather than over the network.

Is it worth more than double the price? Not unless you absolutely need to have faster than 45MB/s write speed on the RN102 in my opinion. Otherwise the savings are much better spent on a decent HTPC solution that will have better codec support and a better overall experience.
