Rep: Any specials on the Sky Watcher Entry level ones?

    Any good for entry level?

No, anything less than an 8" dob is not a good first telescope in my opinion, and I did it the hard way buying crap. An 8" dob is around $500 at the moment with our dollar in the toilet.

I'd put the $50 towards cheap binocs, but you have to know what you're buying.

By the way you can probably get better resolution even out of the Nat Geo telescope. That video was awful…you have to at least focus.

I had it for about 2 weeks and returned it. Good for the Moon. That's it.

  • :) I want one good enough to get a close look at boats way out to sea. I have binoculars but they are not powerful enough and my hands shake a bit so its impossible for clear image :(

    • Hi Pookie,

I will recommend you astronomy binoculars + tripod, so you can also use for stargazing.

However if portability is not a problem, the money is actually enough to buy a AZ3 mount telescope, which is suitable for Land viewing as well as star viewing.

      • Hi, thanks for your reply. What prices am I looking at for these ?

and I have heard that 'image stabilising' is the way to go..thoughts ?

        Cheers

  • Any point buying any kind of telescope when you live close to a city?

    • +1

      Hi FabMan,

i will recommend telescope with AZ3 mount, so you can use it for land viewing as well.

If you not doing any land viewing as well, just grap the aldi telescope to view the moon.

When you live close to city, you may get high rise view and know what's happening next door with a telescope.

  • Okay this post has now made me want a telescope, I will be buying one. Even went to Australian Geographic to look at them.

I want to be able to make out Jupiter and Saturn. But this will also be my first ever telescope, not sure I will enjoy the hobby.

    Looking at:

    http://www.ozscopes.com.au/refractor-telescope-celestron-ast…
    http://www.ozscopes.com.au/celestron-astromaster-130eq-teles…

    • Hi Fabman,

All these 3 are EQ mount, so i presume this is your preference and yes, refractors are low maintenance.

Celestron 70EQ & Saxon 909EQ come with 900mm focal length, give you more magnification with same eyepiece compare to shorter tube and it will be good choice for planetary as you needed. While the saxon 90mm aperture give you more light compare to celestron 70.

Celestron 130EQ is Newtonian Reflector telescope, come with 650mm focal length, less magnification compare to telescopes above, giving you wider field of view, which mean better for deep-sky but still ok for planetary. if you having difficulty on focusing after some time, you have to collimate your telescope.

Newtonian Telescope are cheaper and come with larger aperture, give you better image quality with the same budget you get a refractor. So i will recommend you to get a newtonian, use it as a first telescope, forget about the maintenance since you not even know you enjoy this hobby or not.

My suggestion is http://www.ozscopes.com.au/skywatcher-114mm-reflector-telesc… if you agree with me.

If you wish to continue with refractor, i will recommend you saxon 909, better mount compare to celestron 70, saxon telescope come with tube ring, which is more sturdy and steady.

      • Thank you for taking the time to make an in depth response, the wife is giving her approval so likely to buy one real soon!

However, thinking about it and talking with someone who owns a telescope, I really think I'm going to make more use out of one that is more portable than perhaps the ones you and I have suggested so I actually use it on trips… More research!

Saxon 909 EQ2 is still looking good, 12kg isn't too bad, just wondering about ease of moving it about, such as ease to dismantle and reassemble, it resistance to being bumped around in car journeys, a bag specifically for the scope, being able to use at a campsite day and night.

          Hi Fabman,

Just a friendly remind, image from telescope is upside down or back infront, it is nothing different when you look at the star, but if you use on land viewing, u need a erecting eyepiece.

i will also recommend you to look at AZ3 mount, which is better for both sky and land use.
