Maglite LED 4-D at Coles Supermarkets for $29.00 Started 22/10/2009 Ends 28/10/2009

340

Maglite LED 4D Touch/Flashlight. Can be found in Coles (Melbourne confirmed) catalogue, page 17, on sale for $29. "While stocks last".

It runs a 3 watt LED off four D-cell batteries (Duracell included). Variable throw and flood. Spare bulb stashed safely in the tailcap.

Last time (almost two months ago) Coles had these babies on sale for $39 each. I had to go through 3 stores to find them in stock (I was a bit late); I snatched two. Now they've dropped to $29, and I'm tempted to get third. Just though I should share.

Yep, good deal alright for a true professional flashlight, these are not some cheap toy crap from Dealextreme! These were a great buy at $39, now they're a steal! ;)

    • This oversized & overpriced toy only outputs 122 lumens, my 1xAA Fenix LD10 can match tat ;)

      • +1

With a runtime of what, an hour? I know that's great for running out in the backyard and playing around with your little mates, but when you've gotta rely on it working ALL NIGHT in an emergency that's when these workhorses THRIVE!!! ;)

I love all these little boys with kiddie torches, they're just toys to them so all they care about is output (at the expense of longevity)! I've got maglites over 20 years old still working…that you can still get parts for! Come back and tell me how great Fenix is when it has that kind of reputation to stand behind! ;)

    • +1

Thats a pretty funny statement, considering that a 20 dollar 'cheap' toy crap from DX i.e. ANY modern Cree LED will output BETTER than ONLY 122 lumen's that this 1KG brick in a form factor smaller than your hand. Theres a reason why real 'professionals' don't use Maglites for illumination purposes but ONLY for the fact that you can use it as a baton - that is, Maglites are utter crap for lighting.

That being said, Maglite's ARE very durable so this one would be a good backup torch to store.

      • +1

You've already answered your own question, durability = quality, period! The maglite will still be working LONG after the cheap crap has been forgotten, fact! :)

Mere output isn't everything, the runtime of those 4x D cells is considerably longer than that of any of the "modern" torches you're touting given their outrageous outputs, simple physics! I'd personally rather have usable light for a longer period than blinding light for a short one!

Think of it this way, what would you rather drive crossing the Nullabor…a workhorse like a diesel Land Rover with a massive fuel tank that might not be fast but bloody reliable; or a sporty little two-door buzzbox that goes fast, looks great but gets poor km/tank? Um, that's a rhetorical question BTW! ;)

        • Just as with everything else, it depends on what the intended use will be. I have Maglites, cheap dx crap, not-so-cheap dx crap, and surefires. The surefire L4 is my main torch due to its bright floody beam, small'ish size, build quality, and reliability - but it has really crap runtime which makes it useless as a bike light.

That is where the cheap dx SSC P7 is awesome. VERY bright, and decent runtime at mid brightness, plus a floody beam. Perfect for a bike light.

A 4D Maglite would be completely, absolutely useless in my day-to-day use - big, heavy, dim. It doesn't fit anywhere into my day-to-day usage patterns. There's no point having a diesel land rover if I'm not crossing the Nullabor - in urban areas, it's big, clunky, and slow.

That said, I do have two 4D Maglites - the LED one i picked up today thanks to this deal, and a 4D incandescent one I bought 15 years ago when I was a lil' kid. They're useless as day-to-day torches for me, but excellent as an emergency torch.

REAL professionals don't use maglites - they use surefires ;)

          • @eug:

REAL professionals don’t use maglites - they use surefires ;)

Very ugly generalisation. "Real professionals" use what their job, and the task at hand, requires. Even the site you link does not indicate that they use Surefire exclusively. Security guards favour Maglites (legal batons :p ). The LAPD use the Pelican 7060 (designed specifically to NOT be usable as a baton).

Personally, I would trust the Maglite more when I go camping, mostly for its longetivity. Yet, I might also carry a Cree, just in case.

Might be why our household has 5 motor vehicles…

            • @TimeOrMoney: I suppose you didn't realize the wink at the end of that sentence meant I was mocking fatal's "professionals use maglites" statement…

For camping, I definitely wouldn't fully rely on my dx cheapie - I'd bring the maglite. The surefire L4's runtime on rechargables is too short to be of much use on a camping trip unless I brought a whole bunch of spare batts, so the ssc P7 will probably be the main light with the maglite as a reliable backup.

Incidentally, the rubber switch cap on my maglite doesn't seem very water-resistant. Mine popped off at the wrong moment, getting some seawater in there.

  • Awesome price. I'd get one if I didn't have one already :)

    • I have one for the car and one for the house. I plan to get at least 1 more. Also at this price, they also make decent gifts.

      • Imh86, could you tell us whether this torch uses a switching driver, or a resistor for the LED? Any idea whether its a regulated driver?

And what's the spare bulb - same led or a conventional bulb?

Thanks for posting this deal, very good price indeed.

        • +2

Hey kimmik, the Mag 3W LED uses a switcher, and is regulated.

          The spare bulb is incandescent.

        • The newer types with Rebel LED's ARE regulated. On a closer look these DO seem to be the newer types..

  • Damn that's huge… how much do 4-D batteries cost these days? I'm gonna go get one =)

    • It's a tad over 1kg (with the included batteries) and ~37.5cm long.

  • Does it have yellow or white LED bulb?

    • The LED semiconductor die is yellow…
The actual light produced is white.

  • Nice, I'm gonna get two.

  • +2

    Great for whacking intruders.

  • It this light regulated?

    • The LED bulb is regulated. For those who don't know, this means that it should retain a consistent brightness for the life of the batteries and shut off once the battery voltage is below threshold. This is as opposed to unregulated torches which dim as the battery voltage drops.

  • The bulbs are a nice white colour, although I bought two and one is slightly greener than the other. One thing to note is the spare bulb in the base of the torch is the old conventional style bulb, not a spare LED.

    Still an awesome bargain.

Coles in Cessnock, NSW has 2 left.

    • Oh right thank palpatine, you answered one of my two questions.

Can you tell us anything about how the led is driven in this torch?

  • Just picked one up for myself at Kings Langley, NSW Coles.. 1 more left!

    Great deal and great torch!

  • Great deal and Christmas is coming. About 5 left at Woy Woy and a few more at Gosford this afternoon. Note they were at the end of one of the aisles, not with the the batteries and other torches. They also had the $39 price tag but rang up at $29.

  • 8 left at Birkenhead Point Coles, Sydney.

Edit: after a little research it seems these (at least the one I got) have the older and less efficient Luxeon III LEDs as opposed to the current Rebel 060 LEDs.

  • Just picked one up here in Brisbane. It's definitely not as bright as my other LED torches, but it's built solid. My other 4D maglite is about 15 years old and it still works.

  • +3

buy two and make nunchucks for ravers

    • +1

better to replace them with fully sick uuuveeee leds then

  • I purchased one last month at coles for $39 and was happy with the purchase then, I'm tempted to get a second one for the car.

Lifetime warranty and built to last.

I hope the 'while stocks last' means they at least got additional stock, because the one I purchased was the last one in town (3 coles in the area)…

    Wish me luck

  • +1

Just bought 2, they had around 30 left at Jammison in Canberra. Comes in that "slice your fingers up while trying to open" packaging.

  • Is this suitable for modifying? e.g. is the LED nicely thermally connected to the body.
If you ripped out the cheapo LED it comes with, and put in something decent like a
multi XR-E, or a single Cree MC-E, you could have a nice torch. With a good regulator, and Li_Ion cells.

Yes, as is, it is as powerful as a single-AA Cree.

    • I don't think the LED in these things is that cheap…

    • This tutorial is for modding a 3D Maglite with a P7.

      • Does this work as a drop in replacement?

        http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14413

        • Judging from the way the lamp and button are housed, I do not think that P7 drop-in would work, and some modifications may have to be made…
I personally don't plan on modding any of mine just yet.

      • Thanks for that. But that thread discusses an incandescent, not LED, mag. So they need a custom-made heatsink.

Looking further, I don't think this torch is a good base for a custom one. Its just too big and heavy, and you can't get D-size li-ions. A 3xC-cell maglite would be better, but I'll just stick to using 18650 cells.

  • got mine today at Broadway shopping center (Sydney). Didn't count how many left but guessing about ~7-10 left this morning. All of them had a bit of dust on the package, like its been there unmoved for quite some time.
    Great deal, thanks

  • awesome babies, tried a few swings with it, its abit heavy for one hand so it works best with a double handed grip. the light aint too bad either.

  • Tons of these available at coles Chadstone today. At the end of the bread aisle I think it was.

  • bought the last 3 at Marion, SA. Bloody good deal. Im considering registering it on maglite.com I guess it would make warranty easier

  • These are great in the car to ward off car jackers and road ragers

    • Beat off kangaroos and wallaby's

  • thanks!
i just got 1 y'day! too bad they're all black!
its brighter than my bro's $15 8LED torch.

1 stupid thing about this maglite LED is the spare bulb inside isn't even LED!
LED torch without a spare LED bulb?! wtf?

    • haha, that's assuming you ever need to replace the led…. ever!

simply providing a spare bulb is beyond what's necessary - maglite is just being thorough. i would guess no one in this forum will ever need to replace the maglite's led.

and regarding your bro's 8led torch, there's no contest. the older tech low power leds make 2-5lumens each…

    • The Maglite LED bulb included is rated at 10,000 hours. That's over a year of continuous on time, and likely a decade for most people's casual usage. Maglite put the spare bulb there for emergency situations, and only temporarily until you can buy another LED bulb, at which point you'd put the spare bulb back in the tailcap for next time.

It's like the mini-spare wheel many cars have.

  • anyone know if there are any available in Perth - Innaloo or Scarborough???

  • Box Hill Centro Coles had none left today. Went to Camberwell Coles in The Well and there were 3. I took one. The other two had broken packaging (but torch was fine).
