    that not cheap

      are you kidding ?

It's peak season, the only time of year airlines make money. Qantas website is over $2500 for same dates.

    • $1777 now the cheapest we have. Still hundreds of dollars cheaper than anything online.

We're now taking bookings up to return date of 25 January 2016.

Challenge you to find anything even close with our dates.

      • $1731 for direct flights with Virgin Australia BNE-LAX 16-31 December.

        • -4

try looking at dates 26-31 Dec BNE/LAX nonstop on Qantas back 16-23Jan when most families actually want to travel !!!

          • you can actually use Qantas ff points before they are actually earned, meaning the 15,000 to 16,000 each person inc kids can be used, eg. getting to Colorado (12,000 pts + $2)
    • we can now do same fare of $1699 for departure up to 5 January 2016, with return dates up to 23 January 2016, but these are limited !!!

$992 on Qantas' website. What am I missing here?

    • -4

Came here to post something similar (Air NZ has these flights significantly cheaper I believe). This couldn't be any further from a bargain.

      • Just searched on Air NZ Brisbane -> LA return, departing 16 Dec returning 30 Dec is $2125.

      • cheapest now $1777 so still hundred of dollars cheaper than anything else out there.

Challenge you find anything even close with our peak season dates.

Can you please amend your -ve vote.

    • Sorry, that's one way. $1917 on Qantas' website. But looking at the orangey bar to the right there, I can get Melb return on NZ for $844. THAT is a bargain.

      • +7

        But at Christmas?

        • +4

Cut them some slack, at midnight, they don't have the same ability to read the important details after a few beers etc, LOL

Going via AirNZ as suggested by Puff Braddy and RickMeahan

          Brisbane to LAX

Dec 13 thru Jan 3rd (3 days either side of the example in the OP's post)

The rates are $2079 to $2364 with the fare for the exact same date $2269

AND with the AirNZ "bargain" i have the "luxury" of visiting Auckland Airport transit lounge for 2 hours at no charge - making the total flight time around 17 hours.

Giving positive vote as these negatives are NOT accurate, and while I don't want to fly at that time, I think others may want to do so

        • +1

@RockyRaccoon: Maybe I just get different results on Qantas' website: http://awesomescreenshot.com/0f748sk20c

$1917 return on Qantas on the dates specified in the "bargain". So the bargain is certainly cheaper than the rate I can get on Qantas website.

And I'll give that it's cheaper enough to qualify as a bargain and remove my neg.

      • no cheapest fare on Qantas website is over $2500 !!! You must be looking at other dates.

It's dates in both directions that determine fare not just outbound.

    • have another look …… over $2500 not $992.

    • Think $992 is outbound cost only of a return ticket !!! Need to virtually double that at least.

  • +3

Not quite the same dates, but at half the price, you'd have to consider this…

the link is for low season flights next month. the $1699 is for peak season earlybird fares at Xmas. Over $800 less than Qantas website & over $400 less than poor old Air NZ with no very valuable Qantas ff points & having to change plans in both directions in Auckland.

      • Totally agree. even though I would never fly at that time overcrowded and more expensive. But for those who must/want to this is a good price considering low season airfare from Qantas are currently $1290

        Thanks for posting.

Sorry travelwiz; welcome to OzBargain. With fire.
Have a +1 care of my fat thumb.

  • Aah~ MSY website flashbacks

  • +4

You should retract your ones unless you can show cheaper flights for the same dates , not reference airnz which is dearer for dec.

    • +1

Done. But see my comment here that I can get $1917 on Qantas on the same dates. I removed my neg because a $250 saving on nearly $2k qualifies as close-enough to a bargain it doesn't deserve the neg.

      • it seems Qantas is having a short duration sale up to departures 16Dec($1917). Maybe only a few seats at this $1917 price.

Just had a quick look at

        BNE/LAX 16DEC
        LAX/BNE 1JAN & fare of $2242 + card fee comes up.

        Come home 10Jan & it's $2422.

Not quite sure why Virgin & others aren't loaded to 10Jan yet.

  • -7

IM literally travelling for half that price to san fran today

    • +3

Compare like travel dates with like travel dates before you can vote negative on this. But since you are travelling today I guess you won't read this

    • today is low season, not peak season !!!

  • +2

Proof that you can match dates at Christmas!
Fares typically sky rocket around that time

    • they don't skyrocket, they just don't discount to loss leader levels.

They are 20 different fares for same flights/same dates.

Cheapest for dates mentioned is by far $1699.

  • too ex. given the drop in AUD and fuel. It's only $1200 on Virgin before 10/12. Just take kids out of school for 1 week. My kids go to private school and finish on the 4th so I'm tempted to get this deal for NYC $1550. But then I believe it should come down more.

    • +1

again before 10DEC is low season on Virgin. Try looking at 16Dec.

The best fares are for booking right now.

Before 10DEC would get any cheaper to LAX on virgin unless you want to take up to 48 hours to fly the very long way via China & then you might save $50.

    • The 16th December is high season with Virgin and although flights for 30th December haven't been released yet (they will in a couple of weeks) the price for the same dates in this deal will be pretty similar. I have to agree with you sal78 that I would just let the kids finish a week early. Schools don't do anything useful in the last week in my experience anyway.

    • Where'd you see the $1200 @sal78 ?
I'm looking to leave on the 8th(ish) of December, returning 3rd(ish) Jan

      • virgin but sale may have finished.

        • no virgin are only loaded up to 22 Dec. Not sure why they are not keeping up with Qantas.

Heaps of people looking for cheap flights (those in the know, know that 11 months out is cheapest time to book peak season flights)

Although 8 Dec is a few days before peak season, 3 January is.

        • I took the google ITA matrix print out showing the cheap virgin flights to a few travel agents as I was unable to book online with virgin and they all said the same thing - they can't book them as virgin haven't loaded them yet.

        • -1

          @anawth:

Virgin are either slack (as Qantas & other airlines are now loaded until about 13 January 2016) or perhaps it's got something to do with CRS(computer reservation system) fees which are substantial. Think most airlines pay when clients booked, even if they don't go ahead with booking.

(a price without a booking is kind of meaningless, as availability can change seconds after looking)

  • +1

So, travelling mid/late December…this would be the price to expect? Is this 'average' for a December deal or pretty much as cheap as I'd get?

    Honest question.

    • +1

Whilst this doesn't strike me as an outstanding deal this is about as cheap as it gets for mid/late December departures on direct flights. So if that is the only time of year you can go or you just want to have a USA white Christmas I would be satisfied with this price.

      • it won't get any cheaper than $1699. Not a lot of seats at $1699 & these will sell out fast. Then $1799, $1899, $1999 & upwards.

    • expect to pay $2500+ on Qantas. A few years ago this was $3300.

  • The OP is pretty deceptive, he/she must know that more fares open up around that time of year. I flew last year peak time December with Qantas and the flights ranged from $1000- $1500 BNE to LAX - return.

    • no, we're not deceptive at all. Been doing this a long long time. Peak fares with Qantas have not been less than $2000 in last 7 years (except for a handful of seats we get-we don't get 100's of seats at the $1699 return). You are confusing early December with peak season which starts for departures around 11 December & goes thru to around 16 January.

Why would any airline have cheap fares at a time of year when all their flights are full ?

The only time fares were anything like fares you mentioned in peak season was at start of GFC when demand dropped off dramatically 7 supply went thru the roof as both Virgin & Delta starting flying SYD/LAX.

  • Word of warning here:
    http://abr.business.gov.au/SearchByAbn.aspx?SearchText=82039…

ABN status: Cancelled from 04 Sep 2014

    • They have updated their ABN on their website.

    • -2

      incorrect !!!!

abn is alive & well !!!

      • You mean you updated the details on your website more than 4 months after you had a change of ABN.

        • -2

we had a change in ownership, so our ABN changed.

We hardly ever look at anything but home page (we put deals on the home page).

We get so damb busy we don't get around to updating it, sometimes.

Our website (home page) is just meant to be basic info.

There's this myth out there, that if it's cheaper, it can't be any good.

Part of this, might be that many agents, make more money the higher the cost.

Doesn't work like that with us.

We actually make more on cheaper fares to USA at Xmas than higher fares, because we buy them upfront (we know we can sell them, airlines don't have to take the risk we do)

Not sure why other don't do this. It's huge in North American & UK.

          Look at ski resorts.

We send a lot of families to Copper Mt Colorado. It consistently gets voted best family resort in North America.

20 mins drive east of Copper on interstate 70, is Vail. Vail is massive, almost too big.

Prices when trying to compare apples with apples(not always that easy) are 2 to 4 times higher at Vail.

Vail is big & it takes time to get around Vail (both village & mt).

          • Copper has things like PRIORITY LIFT LINES for foreigners who buy their lift tickets out of USA.

Where would I rather ski or board ? I hate q's. Have been in some long q's at Vail, up to 45 mins. Longest q ever at Copper around 2 mins. Only catch with no q's is you get wron out quicker, as standing around, you get your breath back.

We now have allocation coming home later in January (flights today are now loaded until 23 January 2016) & incredibly at same price of $1699 return. Melbourne is common rated(same pricing for cheapest seats if any still available - many of cheapest seats sell out the day they become available)

Sydney on the other hand is seemingly much more expensive.

But that maybe be head office syndrome. Everything in SYD is more expensive & people generally get paid more in SYD for doing same thing as other people outside SYD.
