This upgrade version is for both Vista or XP users, but in many cases you will need to do a clean install.

how do you receive the key once you've purchased it?

    • +1

It tells you on the screen and they email it to you.

  • thewiz - sounds like your not smart enough to know how to make a boot disk :D

    • The upgrade process with WIndows 7 has changed. You have to install it from a legally activated copy of XP or Vista. If your HDD is blank it wont't let you install it.

      • Yes, it has changed, but for the better; read the above article to find out why you're dead wrong! ;)

  • I'm a Uni student, with linux os on the computer. If I buy this, can I install it. Otherwise, how much is it for the student version for people who don't already have an obsolete copy of Windows.

Is it possible to use someone elses installation disk, and then use the serial number which I buy online? Would that be illegal, or legal? I want to follow the law.

I feel disadvantaged for avoiding the insecurities of xp and vista, maybe this discounted windows is 'compensation' for those who had to put up with it?

    • "If I buy this, can I install it."

No. You need to upgrade from a qualifying version of Windows - either XP or Vista.

"Is it possible to use someone elses installation disk, and then use the serial number which I buy online? Would that be illegal, or legal? I want to follow the law."

No. You need to upgrade from an activated version of Windows XP/Vista for this to work. When I say upgrade, you don't have to do an in-place upgrade, you can still do a clean install - but you must have a licensed copy of XP/Vista to use this version of W7. If you are a Uni student, many Uni's including mine are giving you Windows 7 for free . You might need to be in the Informatics/Engineering faculty to obtain it though.

"I feel disadvantaged for avoiding the insecurities of xp and vista, maybe this discounted windows is ‘compensation’ for those who had to put up with it?"

      Unlikely :)

  • Anyone know what the backup disk is? Is it just a DVD with Windows 7 on it or does it include the smexy case too?
Either way, I don't have 4gb of download to spare.
And I know this is an 'upgrade', but I'm on Windows 7 Beta, does this mean I can just buy my code and get the full version? Or will I still need to clean sweep

    • AFAIK clesn install

    • I can't say for certain about the Windows 7 disk, however when I bought the Microsoft Office upgrade back-up disc it just came in a plain plastic case, not like the retail package. I would say they probably won't give us nice packaging because we are getting it cheap. Again not sure about this one though :)

  • Anyone know the cheapest way to buy Win 7 for those who are not a student? Tried to get my 2 student relatives to get it for me and both then got it for themselves instead.
Dont think it is worth the $199 they are saying it will cost to upgrade from Vista (plus I have 2x Vista installs)

      OEM.

      • Cheapest OEM I have found in Perth is $99 (with hardware purchase - though doesnt say what hardware) for Win7 Home.
Anyone know how to get a US Family pack (US$150)

the whole point of a boot disk is so that an OS can be installed on a formatted hdd with nothing on it. this is what windows 7 does. you dont need an existing OS to install windows7. you do however need to convert the downloaded files into a boot disk 1st.

  • Got this free from TAFE yesterday

    Hi Guys
Plz see what I just found out about CUSTOM install

"Choose Custom to completely replace your current operating system, or to install Windows on a specific drive or partition that you select. You can also use Custom if your computer does not have an operating system, or if you want to set up a multiboot system on your computer. For more information about setting up a multiboot system, see Install more than one operating system (multiboot)."

Hope it can solve the puzzle.

  • "You can also use Custom if your computer does not have an operating system"

which is exactly what i have been saying all along :)

  • I cannot afford to do a new install on my current setup of Vista Business.. I have too many things working on my laptop. Is it possible to just upgrade on what I have and not have to get rid of all the softwares?? Advice required! Cheers!

    • Yes. It's called an 'in place upgrade' and it keeps all your Windows Vista Business programs, files and settings and upgrades you to W7 Professional.

Very easy to do. Can take up to 2 hours depending on how much stuff it has to import. I did it myself going from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate and had no problems.

Eventually I did a clean install anyway, but if you're short on time, you just download the file after paying for it, double click from within Windows Vista Business and it will upgrade your OS. No need to burn a CD.

      • thanx mate!

    • Vista Business to 7Pro is one of the few instances where it is possible to upgrade, and maintain your apps, so long as you stay with the same "bit version" as you are currently using (ie 32bit Vista to 32bit Win7).

  • Hi everyone,

I have a windows XP Home edition and just wondering am I still able to use the "upgrade" deal? Normally you need the XP professional in order for you to upgrade to the Win7 professional,is that correct?
    Thank you.

  • anyone try buying this using an email addy from http://mail.australia.edu/ ?

  • I have upgraded my PC last night to x64 Win 7 pro. It was a Dell running Vista x86 ultimate. I had converted the download files to ISO and burn the image into the DVD. Load the DVD and follows the instruction. I formated the C drive with the installer and install it a fresh. I love it so far. Much more stable than the Vista which I have regret paying.

  • My first post here. I stumbled across this interesting discussion while researching academic versions of Windows 7. My wife is an academic at an eligible Uni [we have previously bought Office via It's Not Cheating]. Having a look at the $49.95 deal, it is limited to only 1 computer which is unfortunate as she uses a desktop at home and takes a laptop to work. She is entitled to only 1 email address and the Uni doesn't subscribe to the Academic Alliance.

Does anyone know for sure if it is limited to only one purchase per person?

Apart from asking a colleague whether they would allow her to use their email address to buy a second copy, can anyone advise whether it is limited to one copy only and, if so, whether I can successfully install and activate on 2 machines? I suspect not, but I'm an amateur and some of the people here seem switched on. It just seems unfair to pay $50 for one copy and a few hundred $$ for a second. Both machines run Vista - Business on Asus and Home on the desktop.

    Thanks all.

    • I'm also interested in hearing a reply to this question.

I have two laptops on vista basic and would be interested in upgrading them to win7 64bit.

      • You can buy 2 copies with the one email address however you have to get 1 64bit and 1 32bit. That's the only way you can get 2 copies for $49.95 from itsnotcheating.

You may be able to buy a 64bit Win 7 Pro from itsnotcheating and a 64bit Win 7 Home Premium from the other website http://windows7.digitalriver.com/store/mswpau/en_AU/DisplayH….

Not sure if they are linked though.

        • I'd probably want to do them both as 64bit of the same version.

I wonder if… I could get one 64 and 32, and use them both to install the 64 version…

Dell allowed it with vista to use the same key…

          hmmm…

          • @Dazza102: wow do you actually have a laptop that has 4+ GB RAM? :o

(cuz otherwise 64-bit would be useless, from what I understand)

            • @themonty: yes I do, and no that isn't correct, a 64bit OS has many more features then just being capable to use 4gb of ram.

              • @Dazza102: cool!

sorry i meant useless as in your PC wouldn't meet the requirements for 64-bit

        • The "its not cheating" site recognised my email address from my previous purchase, however, the "Home Premium Site" link does not, so despite both using digitalriver, they my not be linked. In which case, you may potentially be able to get four licences from one email address(2x32bit and 2x64bit)!

EDIT: OK….just checked out the Win7 Home Premium link, it only allows you to buy one version (32 or 64bit). this however would allow you to buy a combination of 3 versions of win7 with one email address.

The Home Premium promotion runs until 31st March 2010.

          • @ash2000: sorry, how 3? :S

            • @themonty: 2 from itsnotcheating and 1 from the Home Premium link.

              • @TheWiz: i thought u said itsnocheating recognised your address :s

and how about getting one version of each edition from the home premium link - is that possible? i.e. say, 7 Pro 64-bit + 7 HP 32-bit

                • @themonty: read the comment we are replying too…

1 copy from the Home Premium site. You can only get Pro from itsnotcheating and Home Premium from the Home Premium link.

    • .

  • Can someone post the instructions for converting the downloaded install files to an ISO. I can not get the link to work.

    • I found that copy/pasting the code gave an error, but typing them in worked fine.

  • Hi, can you puchase more than 1 copy of this? I've bought one, but want to upgrade another one of my PCs!

Also, what happened to the product ID of the windows you upgrade from?

  • Does any one know how long it takes for the DVD to arrive?

  • Has anyone been able to use this as custom (clean) install? I haven't been able to get it to work, my key was coming up as invalid for the clean install, but worked for the upgrade of Vista Business.

  • Not sure if I missed this in an earlier post… but is this open to teachers at TAFE also?

  • Well from reading all the posts it appears to me that it is possible to do a clean install from a upgrade. However i need further clarification. Does this mean that if i have no Windows operating system on the HDD i can still do a complete installation? I.e. I have no prior activated versions of windows, will the Windows 7 upgrade still do a full complete clean install???

Is the Upgrade Product Key the same as a Full Product Key???

    Thanks

  • can we vote here how many have done clean install (ie. not upgr) successfully. Thanks

  • has anyone managed to get two copies from the itsnotcheating website, reading the comments and it appears that you can get both the 32bit and 64bit version for the same price, is this true?
    thanks

    • according to whirlpool you are charged twice. still a bargain considering home premium upgrade is like $174 in stores

    • The same price as in $49.95 per copy, yes. You can't get 2 keys for $49.95.

  • Got a serious issue with this purchase as I've been charged twice to my credit card. See my rant here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/18166

    Anyone else got same issue?

    • That looks like you've gone through the UK store. Did you definately go through itsnotcheating?

    • after seeing ur post…i checked my CC details as well. I noticed that they didn't get things right for me either…

not to gloat…but (so far) i've only been charged AUD$49.95 on 26/10 for the "DRI*STUDENTOFFICEA ORDERFIND" item.

Order confirmation email has the correct total of $63.95 for Win7 + backup disc, logging back in to the website to check my order…there were 2 items clearly listed, one for each. It also quoted a FedEx tracking number which then showed the tracking status…apparently should be delivered today.

Not sure what's goin on, or whether they'll charge me the extra AUD$14 later on…

So yeah, I guess everyone might wanna check their credit card statements as well…

      • just got an email to say that they've charged me an extra AUD$14 now that the DVD has actually been delivered…!

  • Yes I'm definite, this is the link (email & pass removed) I got from my email: http://store.digitalriver.com/store/msshau/en_AU/DisplayLogi…

  • Join the MSDN program at UNI and get it free instead.

    • not everyone can do that plus even at certain unis- only specific departments can get access and you need to get confirmation from the IT Support department.

  • I downloaded the 32-bit file. When I run Setup.exe, this error window shows up and says:

"Windows was unable to locate required installation file [boot.wim]. Verify that the installation source is valid, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002."

Please help! I am not very good at computing stuffs! Should I wait until the disk kit comes (I also ordered that just incase and apparently, the "case" occured!)

    Thanks a lot!!!

    • You should have downloaded 3 files:

      setup1.box
      setup2.box
Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64 (I got the 64bit version so you'll have a similar file with x86 most likely)

You need to run the Win7 file to extract the 2 box files.

Unless they have fixed the problem and the download is now an ISO?

      • Yes I've got those 3 files as well. But when I run the file Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x86, a window "Unloading the Box" appears and then an error window says "An error was encountered. Unspecified error"!

What have I done wrong? What should I do??

        Thanks a lot!!

        • That's a new one, I haven't seen anyone with that before. You can't really diagnose anything when it comes up with unspecified error, what a stupid error message.

If I were you I'd either download the ISO that they now have, or if you can't afford the quota then give MS a call and see what they say.

Otherwise try whirlpool and see what people say.

  • lol guess what? M$ finally uploaded an ISO image

    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/t…

  • i think my RAM runs max is 4Gb, so 32-bit is sufficient. what you all reckon?

    • I'd still go 64-bit. I think it's a good time to move to 64-bit, I'm a bit surprised they even have a 32-bit version of 7, but obviously not everyone is ready to switch over just yet.

  • Hi, I am an international student. and using Vista home premium French version, is it possible to use this to upgrade it to Windows 7?

  • can i give the physical disc to a family member? like, its not registered to my student email address is it?

  • I purchased Windows 7 Professional using australia.edu email from the US microsoft site for $34. Use this one for the professional edition.

    http://store.digitalriver.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Acti…

    • Thanks I did this and managed to do a clean install without having to install Windows XP first. I used the Upgrade software as though it was a full release.

When paying for the software it asked for a credit card details but would only allow a USA address. So I put in our address but for country I put in USA (and LA)… and it took payment and gave me the download.

My concern is whether or not www.digitalriver.com is really an accredited Microsoft agent… or whether this is just a scam software site.

      CAN ANYONE CONFIRM??

      • Digital River is a 3rd party company that handles Microsofts online sales. Don't you think if it was a scam it would have been shut down years ago when the Office deal came out…

        • Thanks TheWiz for confirming. I had no idea that digitalriver have been around for so long. Not sure why you assumed I would know that.
