New to Automotive - Looking for a Well Priced 5w-20 Full Synthetic Oil

Hi guys,

Long story short. I am a completed new to cars currently driving a Ford Focus 2011 Titanium HB. It's gonna be my first time to get it serviced by an independent mechanic (recommended by my house mate) and I am going to BMOO. The car is currently sitting at 20,000 km and was serviced once before at the dealer @10,000 km. They used 5w-20 simi synthetic but I am thinking of switching to full synthetic (Not sure whether it's worth though).

So the questions are basically:

Which brand to get?
What size would I need (1ltr or 5ltr)?
Is there a good deal that you can find at the moment?

Any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I'm a little confused - the person/company servicing the car would normally provide the oil, which they'd buy in bulk at a wholesale price. So why exactly are you looking for oil to buy? If you trust the mechanic, why don't you trust their choice of oil? And for that matter, why would you accept recommendations from unknown people here?

The manual for the car will tell you the amount and type of oil you need. The manual may even recommend a brand, but the dealer might use some other type. It will probably be 5-6 litres.

You could also go to the web site of any oil manufacturer and look up the oil that they recommend. Then, go to the web sites of the various car parts/accessories stores (Autobarn, SuperCheap, Repco, etc) and see what's on special.

Really, though, I'm having trouble working out why.

  • you have to buy 5 litres as thats about how much you replace.
dont get carried away by types of oil, just get any decent brand.

    • Thanks for the reply dude. What do you mean by type of oil? All I know is that I need 5w-30 and I read that synthetic is better.

dont get hung up by synthetic, semi synthetic, mineral.
just buy what the hand book says.
I am not picking on your car (please dont take it that way) but it isnt a supercar and I bet you are not going to keep it for life . some a normal castrol gtx type will do. Better yet just have the mechanic supply.

I am no car collector or enthusist but have owned a heap including ford lasers (focus was the replacement) I had one 10 ten years, it did 300,000 km and engine was still fine when I sold it (saw it 6 months later and the speedo had been wound back to 100k!). just did regular services and the oil was changed by ford - I am positive they would not have used synthetic (was prob GTX). save your money, honestly, I bet some people will use the best of the best but you dont need to.
Use the money saved to go on nice weekend drives with friends.

also check if your mechanic really is cheaper as our nissan and honda has fixed service prices and are cheaper than when I got a price from elsewhere (ultratune and local mechanic)

        • Haha, I think I get what you mean. Last time when I brought it to the dealer they gave me a $45 semi synthetic. I might grab the same thing again then. Thanks for taking time and typing it up. Appreciated.

        • @maxhu:
          that oil will be fine.
do check Fords service cost though. you may be surprised on how cheap it is.

Keep it log book serviced and clean and you will do well and get the best trade in when time comes for a new car. I still remember mine from the 80's (Nissan ET Turbo, the Ford Laser Ghia)
          enjoy the ride.

  • that car does not warrant fully synth oil nor the cost of it, go with Semi Synth, like Castrol Magnatec every so often it is on special for $20 for 5 litres, keep in mind that expensive fully synth oil is drained out after 60 months 10,000klms and as above it's not a ferrari

    • Hmmm…I am planning to do an interval of every 15,000 kms. I thought a full synth oil would last longer? or is it still over kill in this case?
