PlayStation 4 Vs Xbox One

Hi Bargainers,

Please help me choose between Playstation 4 and Xbox 1. Which one is better?
My research tells me that PS4 is better but would like to know the expert's views.

Please mention any good deals that you might be aware of.

Basically looking for a console plus fifa 15 and NFS Rivals.

Thanks.

If it's just those 2 games…the experience would be near identical. It'd then just come down to which controller you like, the UI of each console….

Just go with the one your friends have/want.

In terms of console deals though, the Xbox One would be slightly cheaper/you'd get more games with the console bundle.

    • +7

Friend is gonna get ps4 for free so might as well buy that as we can share play online.

      • you will need to buy ps+ as well, though same for xbox with xbox gold for online play

      • Share play, in Australia? I hope your both in the small percentage of the country that has good internet.

    • +5

Get a ball in a cup. Truly mobile gaming.

  • what do you mean better?
    More powerful hardware? PS4
    Better experience? Xbox one
not that the xbox one isnt powerful enough or the ps4 experience isn't good.

id say just go with whatever your friends are on, or if that doesn't matter at all just go with ps4

xbox one is slightly cheaper in some cases over the but prices are pretty equal.

    • Yea.. As i said in the previous comment that friend is going to get ps4 so might as well go for that.
This is going to be my first console so just checking out with bargainers

      • +1

Nothing worse than having no mates to play with. Go for the PS4 if that's where your friends are.

  • +1

Primarily a pc gamer here, I only have xbox one. Very happy with the experience. Graphics are great in forza and gta 5. Has stacks of media Centre apps.
can do a sneaky and buy digital xbox games from usa store that are al ost always cheaper by 30% especially with the usa sales.
integrates with onedrive and streaming media from misc Dlna devices plays all formats I've used.

    • I do use overdrive but don't think that I would be using it much on the console

      • It's pretty cool when you upload footage of your gameplay to OneDrive… For those time you score an amazing goal in Fifa. Makes it easy to share

  • Much of a muchness.

Both have similar online infrastructure and subscription models. Both have similar game libraries. Both have good controllers. XB1 is quieter/runs cooler, but the PS4 is smaller/has no power brick.

Which one has the better game library depends on your tastes and favourite franchises, but as I said, most of their game libraries overlap. This is just the Halo vs Uncharted vs Gran Turismo vs Forza Motorsport factor.

Graphical differences are minor or non-existent depending on the game - they're way closer than PS3/360 were. The multiplatform experience is very consistent this gen. Anyone caring about the differences is better off on a PC.

Honestly, the most important factor is usually - where are your friends playing? If not that, then whatever bundle with as many games you're keen on first pops up. :)

On that note, bundles haven't been great lately for either platform, I'd wait a bit.

  • +1

For me it comes down to 3 factors…

    The controller
    The games
    and what my friends have

    • -3

never base it on what your friends have.. NEVER

      • +3

        Can you elaborate please?

      • +3

I say this as it can be a real cost saver… I love borrowing games from my friends for free!

        • +2

Lucky for you that Microsoft went back on their E3 2012 promises then!

  • +2

I'm wayyyy more of a playstation guy. I dislike that my xbox consoles barely work with the internet turned on (because I've got slow internet)

Even with the wifi off on my xbox one it crashes/freezes/lags so much compared to the ps4. Forces me to do updates and such which leaves me unable to play half the time. The UI just doesn't work for me, and everything is really slow

Having said that I haven't played my ps4 in about 12 months because there aren't any games for it and the xbox one has got several awesome exclusives which I do play regularly.

So unless if you want xbox exclusive games I'd say 100% PS4

  • +1

I had a similar dilemma a while ago, I knew the PS4 was better in terms of performance and internal hardware, but I was still thinking about getting the XBOX One because a) The deals for the XBOX One were much better b) I badly wanted some exclusives. I decided to get a PS4 because my friends had PS4s, no point in having a console if none of your friends have it.

TL;DR Get whichever your friends have, since you said a friend is getting one for free, you should get a PS4.

    • I bought a console that none of my friends had, and have had hundreds and hundreds of hours of immense fun with it, with hundreds more to come with the titles coming out for it this year. So 'no point in having a console if none of your friends have it' is probably not a wholly valid statement. There is such a thing as singleplayer.

      • Guess it works differently for everyone. I used to have a 360, none of my friends had it and I barely had any fun with it. But, again it probably works differently for everyone.

        • +1

I stopped having fun with my 360 after the third red ring, and when the disc drive failed to open without using a knife to pry it open. I have unfinished games on it, but the technical ineptness of the console makes me want to stay far, far away.

But still. Gears Of War tho'!

    • Cool.. Thats what i ll do..
Still holding on for a good deal to come by..
      Maybe around $450 bucks

  • +2

    Fight fight fight fight!

  • +1

    Better you make a poll

  • To me it simply came down to a few different things.

Which one had the better exclusives I cared about? (in this case PS4 had bloodborne which i was really keen on and a couple others including order 1886. Winner ps4

Which ecosystem was I used to? In this case, I'd only ever used the xbox ecosystem with xbox classic, windows live and xbox 360. winner xbox

Which controllers did I prefer? I've spent a lot of time on the xbox 360 controllers both used on the xbox and on my PC so winner xbox

I ended up just getting a xbox for comfort with the controllers, controller compatibility with PC and the fact I'd used xbox live the most. But as for actual performance between the two there's really not much in them IMO

    • +1

fyi ps4 controller works on pc as well :) I use it daily

  • +2

Definitely PS4. I was also divided before both consoles came out. Then I heard how MS xbox was trying to be a tight ass and had complicated steps to just share games (physical discs) with your friends. Although Microsoft scrapped the plans later after how it did not go in their favor, it is still something that stuck with me and reputation of Microsoft dropped right away in my eyes. I will never be buying xbox because of this. I know PS4 doesn't have as good games as xbox at the moment, but it will soon. Some exclusives like "The Last of Us" are well worth playing. Also Sony already has a feature where you can play co-op games with friends even if your friend doesn't have that game, and soon you will be able to play old PS3 and PS2 games through cloud emulation (not sure if xbox also has these features?). Also PS4 has a Virtual Reality head set coming up called project morpheus.

    • +1

The VR stuff is great yes, but I'm sure Microsoft will be getting board the VR boat sometime soon too. IMO all that separates the two is what investment you already had in either camp. They are both great systems. TBH
Nintendo is the only one still innovating. Waiting to see what is in store after the largly disastrous wii u

But this is the innevitable issue with all software houses just using the same old tools like UE4 and Unity. they just pump out a game to either system at the click of a button so the exclusivity just becomes a money transaction between 1st party and developer instead of exclusivity being about the innovation of hardware and a game being designed around that :/

  • +1

i think this is always a simple thought process its surprises me how people still get hung over it…

if you like the MS exclusives get the Xbox

if you like the Sony exclusives get the ps4

if you dont care for exclusives get the ps4

if you like both sets of exclusives get both

controls is a bit to personal taste but both are fine IMO unlike the 360 vs ps3 debate

  • Honest question. Both those games you want are on PC too, so why not consider PC as part of the equation? What do Consoles offer that PC can't in this case?

    • for me i have a pc as well

eg. i cant play FPS on console so any FPS I get on PC, any FPS not on PC doesnt bother me, I never got into Halo etc.

any sony exclusives i play on my ps3/ps4

any xbox exclusives i play on my 360/one

and game that is superior on the PC, I use the PC (GTA5 is or will be, probably the best example)

for some games the consoles offer convenience… eg, I can download a game on the console for under $5 sometimes and it just works with the controller and everything

i dont need to futz around at a desktop

i can bring the console to any tv in the house, plug it in and go, no kbd mouse

however the kbd mouse is what brings me back to the 'FPS experience'

    • +1

I prefer playing it on the consoles rather than PC. Never have been a great fan of PCs.

      • +1

Any particular reason that's holding you back? PCs make fantastic machines for Gaming, and in many ways exceed the Console experience. They are very flexible with options and from a Bargain perspective there are usually better sales on PC.

        • +1

To get a PC capable of playing most Triple A games (However, with most examples, you're not missing out on much if they can't) can cost upwards of $1500.. Especially if you want to play the Witcher, in which case you'll need to acquire Skynet in order to play on minimum spec requirements, or two Skynets if you want to play on recommended settings! (Yes. I stole Penny Arcade's joke :3)

However, to get a console capable of playing those same games is upwards of $399. And considering most 400 dollar computers tend to be work-or-school level machines, I wouldn't be game playing anything more intensive than Minesweeper. So I'd say that by the end of a console and a PC's lifespan, the cost for games tend to equal out towards the end.

Of course, the PC has moddability for games, the benefit of multiple online distributors to compare prices with, and infinite amounts of backwards compatibility. SO it falls back to personal preference.

        • Of course it is a personal preference, but $1500+ is just not true anymore. Prices have dropped dramatically. I just put together a fairly decent gaming PC for $740 from parts which would easily exceed the performance of a Console, a little bit more if you want someone else to build for you (they are as easy as Lego to build though).

Yeah almost twice the upfront price of a Console (even though I am not aware of any PS4/XB One for $399 except maybe second hand ones from gamers changing their minds) but $1500+ is certainly not necessary.

You will make up the cost easily by not having to buy Xbox Live/PS Plus for multiplayer, huge back-catalogue of games (that are really cheap), sales from many different stores giving more competition that drive prices down, the use of a PC for other uses than gaming and uses not possible with a Console (eg: Emulation).

        • +1

agree with smeg, you can probably cobble together a box for under $1k these days that will make a decent fist of games in FHD and 60fps

although PCs are expensive considering, you can also use them for other things and you should have screens kbd mouse and even loose ssd/hdds around the house

          basic i7, 8gb ram, z97 mb + a $300gpu… not bad going

if you're fussy and want a GTX970 then yeah, price goes up considerably

        • @tonyjzx: Well, yes, I'm working on a $400, 6 year old box, and it plays everything up to PayDay 2 with relative ease… (Well, I had to turn almost everything to low graphics settings.) I was just talking in terms of the people who want to play with as many pixels as they can cram onto the screen at once.

Which is the same people who'd be interested in a next gen console anyway, coz let's face it, they're not buying one for the high quality games.

        • +1

@FrankMcFuzz: Not really a fair comparison then for a PC with max graphics vs Console. Really it should be low settings vs. Console. My $740 PC could probably do high to maximum graphics at 1080p/60fps by the way. Nobody buys a console mainly for the Graphics knowing that PCs are on a whole level above when it comes to Graphics.

        • +1

I wouldn't compare PC with consoles at all.
The pleasure and experience of playing games are different on both of them.
I prefer sitting on the recliner in front of a 50 inch screen with a controller in my hand rather than playing games on a 15 inch screen.
Surely I can connect my PC to the TV and use a phone as a controller but thats too much of hassle.

        • to me playing pc games at low res low quality isnt worth the time

if you want to sit down and play a state of the art game for a few hours you want the best experience possible and that means at least HD all gfx up (eg. high detail, high quality)

the last game i played was Metro Last Light and that was FHD everything high but not necessarily ultra

          that meant my old i7 + a ati 7870 and a 24" LCD

thats about a $1,000 pc today?

        • +1

@rooh: It's very easy to connect your PC to your 50 inch TV and use a controller. Steam (which you would mainly use to launch your games) has a Big Picture mode for exactly this purpose.

        • @rooh:

Not sure if retarded, or trolling……………

        • @The Land of Smeg:

Yeah almost twice the upfront price of a Console (even though I am not aware of any PS4/XB One for $399 except maybe second hand ones from gamers changing their minds) but $1500+ is certainly not necessary.

I actually bought my PS4 for $399.20 with free shipping from the Dick Smith ebay store: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/156984

Other times the PS4 has been on sale for that price (only a quick search on Ozbargain, but verifies it wasn't a one-off deal and can be had for that price if you shop around):
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/157890
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/153040

        • +1

@brotherrfranciz: My point still stands, I wouldn't get a PS3/XB One even if the upfront console price was "free" (unless I could use it for something without Xbox Live Gold/PS Plus or any other cost that is locked to that platform).

        • +1

          @The Land of Smeg:

I wasn't arguing your point. I was just letting you know that the $399 price point is real, since you commented that you were not aware that you could get a brand new PS4/XBone console for that price.

I hate these PC vs console debates - I have both and love both (medium/high-spec gaming PC, ultrabook, PS3, PS4, PS Vita). In fact, I actually agree with your point about overall costs due to Steam, GoG, GMG, Humble store, etc (spent approximately $50 on around 20 games during Xmas to add to my pile of shame lol). On the other hand, I also love the Playstation exclusives like the Uncharted, God of War, Infamous and Little Big Planet series, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, etc.

Ultimately, this is a debate about gaming: if you love gaming, it won't matter what platform you play on.

        • @brotherrfranciz: I support most of what you said, but in typical Phoenix Wright style I found some contradictions in your post. Your explanation for loving the PS4 was for the Playstation exclusives:

like the Uncharted, God of War, Infamous and Little Big Planet series, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, etc.

Only one of the 7 you mentioned are exclusive to the PS4. Is your love for the console retroactive, once these frnachises are finally released for the console?

        • @FrankMcFuzz:

Eh? I said Playstation exclusives, not PS4 exclusives…

        • @brotherrfranciz: So your reason for buying a PS4 is for games that don't exist?

          Typical next-gen console purchase logic.

        • -1

          @FrankMcFuzz:

Calm down please, no personal attacks required.

If you read my paragraph again: "I hate these PC vs console debates - I have both and love both…"

Nowhere did I mention a reason for purchasing a PS4. I was just commenting that I love both the PC and the console in general - I guess the last sentence in my original post sums up what I am trying to get at: "Ultimately, this is a debate about gaming: if you love gaming, it won't matter what platform you play on."

I feel like I am missing something here because of the way you keep attacking me. Did I offend you in some way? If I did, I sincerely apologise: my comments were just general commentary and not intended to attack people for purchasing one or the other (or neither).

        • On a PC, you spend hours screwing around with the config, in every game. You also have driver conflicts, software problems, a whole heap of things that eat up your time when often you just want to play. It's just the nature of PCs with their varied posible components.

You don't have that problem with consoles. It's simple plug and play.

    • Playing on the pc is like using your study room for entertainment. The settings just doesn't seem right.

      • :| I use my study room for entertainment…… I don't study so good.

  • +2

Neither. Right now the library isn't great wait for another 1/2 year

    • At least what I want, Fifa and NFS (or may be some other racing game as NFS Rival's reviews weren't so great) are there.

      • Have you considered Forza Horizon 2? It's pretty enjoyable. Otherwise just play NFS most wanted on the original xbox haha.

    • +1

With Order 1886 round the corner, the best feeling is waiting for reviews to come out. I want it to be good so desperately, but if it turns out to be awful, that's more ammunition for not buying a PS4. Plus the PS4 will have No Man's Sky, Uncharted 4, and Bloodborne, which are almost guarenteed to be good.

The Xbone had the Crackdown 3 announcement and new Fable game last E3. But with the last titles of those respective games being incredibly lackluster, I am trying not to hold my breath. Xbone also has Space Call Of Duty 5…. Sorry, I mean Halo 5, coming out this year. And Microsoft bought Battletoads back to life late last year. Hopefully they palm it off to Platinum, who are currently already working on a Xbone exclusive game called Scalebound… And HOPEFULLY, they don't give Battletoads to its original owner Rareware. Because. Well. Rareware. I don't want them to Kinect Spawtz it.

But jesus. That Conker teaser last year? Yes please. I'll just open my wallet and you can take whatever you like, Microsoft.

But there's tons of things coming out this year, and E3 always brings heaps of good news.

TL;DR, pretty much reaffirming what neonlight said.

    • I got my xbone in one of those mental bundles late last year and have been playing it constantly. I've finished AC Unity, COD (although multiplayer is always an option), and I'm working through Forza Horizon 2 and Shadow of Mordor. I don't think the library is great at the moment, but there is plenty to keep you entertained for a while.

      • +2

Shadow of Mordor is the game I am most looking forward to at the moment. Yes, it is on the PS3, but with the Nemesis system destroyed, why bother? It's like saying "Here, we got you Age of Empires, but it's a nerfed version and you can only play in the stone age!" It's not going to sell me the console though. Not yet. Check back at Christmas 2015/2016 ;D

  • +2

Should i get a holden or a ford?

    • +2

You should get a Nissan! It's smaller, less competitive and foreign! So that you can play Mario games… On your Nissan. You see where I'm going with this?

  • I am really surprised how comfortable the PS4 controller is, compared to PS3. I used to have aching thumbs and palms after a 1/2 day session… played Tomb Raider on the weekend for about 6-7 hours and didn't have the throbbing.

Didn't realise XBONE has OneDrive support (I use it for photos, videos, and some work stuff)

  • +2

    PS4.

PS4 has a huge lead, so if you plan to play online then the majority of players will be there (even if it's a multi-platform game).

It also has more processing power with a slightly more powerful CPU/GPU and better memory. You won't notice this now but as the console matures and devs find new ways to crank more power out of these machines, you'll see that the PS4 will be ahead of the xbone in terms of performance.

Microsoft tried to screw over users with a very anti-consumer device at announcement and did several major backflips on their policies to get the xbox one out the door.

  • If you play fifa 15 online, then definitely ps4. It has more player.

  • +1

If you just want to play good games, and don't care too much about the graphics, PS3 is still the better console at the moment, because 1) PS3 has more games 2) it is much cheaper.

  • Xbox One

  • +1

    Even Sheldon couldn't decide

  • +3

I think the Wii U is pretty good.

  • I have had both consoles for over a year.
At the start I loved the ps4 because it is quicker at loading games and turning on etc, and the games look slightly better.
But the last 6 months I barely touch the ps4. The xbone smashes it media playing wise period. Ps4 is too restricted. Can't play movies off a usb stick or stream etc. So if u are into media playing bare that in mind.
If purely gaming ps4 is stronger but not by much.
Also exclusives to each console may sway you.
I personally think titanfall and forza horizon 2 exclusives can't be matched by ps4 exclusives at this stage.

  • -4

Both are garbage products and value in general compared to spending the same money on a PC build. My 4yr old mid-range generic PC still trounces the PS4 or Xbone in terms of performance & gaming. You'd be able to get something light-years better than a console now for the same cost as a console. PC games are a fraction of the cost & digital downloads are ludicrously cheaper than their gimped console versions. Console controllers work on a PC if you need a controller, but generic $10 controllers are just as good. Keyboard & mouse can be picked up for $10 if you feel like playing a proper FPS game.

PC's are lightweight & mobile now, connect to your 50-inch TV in the lounge room effortlessly & you don't need to worry about what friends you have who play what game, because the PC gamer base is about 5x the size of either segregated small console base. Then you have all the added benefits of PC gaming like real multiplaer with dedicated servers & low ping, free multiplayer, no subscription fee garbage, the ability to jump in & out of the game to check anything online, the ability to skype while gaming, hell the list would be 3 pages long if I really went into it.

TL/DR, buy a PC and game with friends on that instead. It's light-years better in performance, as a gaming experience, multiplayer, versatility, value for money & games only cost a fraction of what they do on a console & they aren't gimped to gaming performance standards of the previous decade.

    • -1

can you tell me how well your PC plays Forza Horizon 2 or The Last of Us or Driveclub or Second Son?

      • +1

Much the same way a console plays any one of the exclusives that the PC has, that outnumber all exclusives on current and previous versions of all the current consoles, in total. Or you know, much in the same way the PS4 or Xbone play any quality game at better than 30fps at 900p…… ?

        • -3

doesnt matter to me bro, i have enough money i have them all

whatever people do to justify their lack of funds is up to them

        • +1

          @tonyjzx:

You don't seem to understand the point of OzBargain……. or logic in general.

        • -5

what i understand is people dont have enough money to have all the options with them and complain about stuff they cant afford

        • +1

@tonyjzx: I could afford them all. That doesn't improve their quality. The xbone and PS4 are still shitty options for an ACTUAL gamer who wants to play ACTUAL games. Stop acting like Flo Rida. I ain't gonna put money down for something I'm never going to use, that will be much cheaper in the future with better bundles of both games AND technology (Incoming 'slimline' or larger capacity hard drive consoles will be this year or next year.)

Then I'll have more money to spend on BLOW and HOOKERS! Is that okay with you, Flo Rida?

        • +2

@FrankMcFuzz: Wasting your time with this guy fuzz. He's awesome and apparently richer than everyone in his mind.

        • -2

sure but then i dont slag off things i dont have

i have a PC, it works for what it is, i dont out there and try to convince people its not a good games platform

my question to you is if xbox and sony are such collossal failures for ACTUAL GAMERS and ACTUAL GAMES why do you think they have sold over 25 million combined?

why havent they just failed and everyone gone to PC?

they all have their place, I'm just not stupid enough to think that they dont

if people enjoy console exclusives then so be, even if they aren't ACTUAL GAMERS and ACTUAL GAMES…

        • +1

          @tonyjzx:

my question to you is if xbox and sony are such collossal failures for ACTUAL GAMERS and ACTUAL GAMES why do you think they have sold over 25 million combined?

Because people don't know any better. Even Ozbargain is filled to the brim of stories to the tune of "I bought a PS4 on release and have played it for 4 hours total". Everyone I know uses their next gen consoles only very occasionally, and their PC's constantly. Just because they're selling, doesn't mean they're getting used.

They'll be good consoles when there are some games on the platform. Even this thread contains posts like "You should buy a PS4 for Uncharted 4!" and "You should buy an Xbone for Halo 5!". Because it's so hard to justify buying it for what they currently are right now.

But hey, buy a console that you're only going to use for a couple hours for the next 9 months, just coz you have the money! I'm apparently stupid for not shelling out already to play all the no games that aren't available!

        • -2

errr i use my ps3 every day (gt6)

i use my xbox one every day (fh2 and forza5)

ps4 occasionally for driveclub but I expect it to be useful for gt7

there's also a smattering of games that I enjoy playing on all of them that arent worth mentioning that i buy on a whim during their sales

my kid uses the 360 for whatever bullcrap they like (minecraft? terraria? popcap rubbish)

is it worth depriving myself of some fun just because other people dont like them?

          strange attitude

all this time I never said that the PC is not good for games because I know it is, I have one but its fine for people who dont have consoles, dont play them to say that ACTUAL GAMERS dont play ACTUAL GAMES on them

          clearly they do

          @tonyjzx:

errr i use my ps3 every day (gt6)

Exactly. You use your PS3 every day. Not your near gameless next gen console, which

          ps4 occasionally for driveclub

Next gen occasionally. Current gen constantly.

          Point achieved.

        • -3

which next gen console is pointless? the xbox one i use every day? or the ps4 i use occasionally?

here's a protip, there's a Mercedes sitting in the garage that only gets driven on weekends.

There's a holiday house up on the central coast that is empty but only gets used when I'm up that way.

Just because I dont use it every day doesnt mean its not worth it or maybe the cost doesnt bother me?

          It clearly bothers everyone else.

        • +2

@tonyjzx: lol, so you're an out of work movie star or you live off your parents? I don't see how anyone else could play consoles all day and spend the rest of his/her time on the internet bragging about all of their money to random stranger who don't give a toss. I too own all of the consoles inc handhelds other than Xbone (passed on this as I don't have the time to play them all as much as they deserve and have time for my family and running a business) and a gaming PC, but I can't say I have time to play every one, every day as you do.

I must say though it doesn't bother anyone that you have lots of consoles and don't need time for work, friends or family. What you no doubt will eventually figure out is that every time you enter a discussion about these things you immediately start looking down your nose at everyone as you believe yourself to be wealthier than other people here.I'm gonna throw it out there, even if everything you say is true - its nothing special mate and I can back up my claims if it comes to it.

They're not, when you consider their utility and usage.

Here's the problem with PCs that no PCMASTERRACE guys seem to get: They take up a lot of your TIME!

You don't realise that people buy consoles because they want to be able to plug the power cable + HDMI cable in, game disc in, and play straight away. That's what most people want, and that's why consoles sell.

You're not some genious smarter than everyone else because you're a pcmasterrace, you're just someone who's either willing or got the free time to:

spend time researching and buying individual compoenents to build a pc (because if you by a ready made PC, you're a sucker and it defeats the purpose of being on ozbargain
you need to spend the time putting the PC together - not that much time usually, UNLESS something goes wrong and you need to troubleshoot your problems. What's that? You spent 4 hours troublingshooting your faulty ram stick? Oh, that's too bad.
You need to spend time installing and configuring windows
You need to spend time installing and configuring games
You need to spend time installing graphics card drivers
You need to spend time in the setup of your games - this is the biggest problem with PC gaming that all pcmasterracers ignore. Nearly every single freaking PC game requires some graphics tweaking or setup tweaking, or other screwing around.

This screwing around with settings is multiplied by 10 if you've got one of these 'budget' systems trying to compete with a console. Yeah, you can put together a PC that will perform better than a console, buy you need to tweak every freaking game to do so, and this can take hours to go from shithouse barely playable quality to just outperforming the console.

Like I said, most people don't want to waste their time going through all of that crap, and they'll buy a simple plug and play console which is fun.

Consoles have been starting to develop this 'take up your time' business. I'm gonna use combinations of what I've heard and what I know.

        What I know:
PS3 has an install phase on (most) new games inserted into the console. This can take anywhere between 5 minutes and 1 hour (Curse you Metal Gear Solid 4!)
The Wii-U, which is lighter on the downloads than all the next gen consoles, installs an update when you put the game in. Mariokart took 20 minutes, and Super Smash Brothers took 50 minutes before I could play.
Online games like Destiny: Oh gooooooooodies, two hours of updates? Awesome. Oh and it's updates for content I didn't even buy and therefore can't access? Oh gooooooooooooooooooooodie.

        What I've heard:
The PS4 and Xbone both contain a plethora of software updates, account syncing wait times, and game installation timers like the ps3.

As someone who games on both PC and consoles, let me say you're correct about the wait times for the PC. And, whilst they may be minimized on console, they still exist and can still be quite lengthy and annoying. It's not as easy as 'plug n play' anymore.

I say, to hell with that crap, back to cartridge!

I haven't used my ps4 very much so I don't know enough to comment on it yet, haven't seen much bad though.

I can comment on the ps3 since I've used that pretty extensively.

It's true some games have lengthy install times when you first buy them, not terrible, but it's not instant play. ALTHOUGH, most games have the option to play from the disc without install, or have a very short small install, and then access content off the disc as you play.

Software updates and game updates are all done automatically at 3am on my ps3, don't ever even notice it.

I can't comment on xbox either because I don't have much experience with it

I have plenty of experience with my pc though, which is actually pretty top shelf and definitely outperforms the ps4. The thing is though, i just don't want to play on the pc.

The last game I played on PC was far cry 4, and (profanity) me was that a piece of shit. The game was pretty great, but the PC version sucked. Constant frame drops, ridiculous time wasting setting up graphics options, terrible ram leaks leading to a crash (it got so bad that I'd set up task manager monitoring ram usage on the second monitor, I'd have to save and quit when it got around 7GB).

It's just that shit that I hate dealing with. It's constant problems or tweaking, spending time looking on websites and finding out "oh, so if I have an AMD GPU with catalyst drivers 13.3 I need to set the fog effects to off otherwise I'll get severe frame drop"

Like, who wants to deal with that crap? and you have to do it for almost every game you play, unless it's an old game and you can max it out, but then when you do, it looks like shit cause it's old, and you think, i'll just download some mods to improve it. 4 hours later after you figure out how to install mods without crashing the game and you haven't even played yet.

For high end games (like Far Cry 4) it is sort of a lucky dip. Let's use Watch Dogs as an example. It only worked on one brand of graphics card because Ubisoft signed an advertising deal with them (I don't remember which! :D) and everyone just crapped on the PC version.

I guess it doesn't matter to me, because I only use my PC to play Dwarf Fortress and Dota, lol. (And it doesn't play either of those real good ;D) But hey. They are free, so who's complaining :3

Consoles win out because there's only one console standard and only one thing to test. I know a guy who spent 6 hours troubleshooting GTA4 for his pc. Lol :D

You can't watch video files from USB/HDD/stream on PS4.

  • Each has pros and cons.

On balance, I think PS4 is better and happen also to be winning the PR war in my opinion.

A recent example is that Street Fighter 5 will be PS4 exclusive ever. That should tell something.

    • SF5 is not a console exclusive. It's a PC game developed on the U4 engine that will have a PS4 port released.

having played FIFA on both XBOX 360 and PS3, XBOX controller is better for FIFA. but I am not sure about XBOX one vs PS4 though.

  • +1

Honestly, right now, neither because of the games libraries. Wait till at least March.

If you want one now for Fifa and NFS, they're both kind of the same for those games.

I hate the Xbox controller, and I love the PS3/ps4 controller. People have different opinions on this, so you need to make your own call.

I think using batteries in a controller like the xbox does is a joke in 2015. That's just pathetic. The PS3/PS4 inbuilt charging is a hell of a lot better.

I also find that the PS4 looks better and complements a living room nicer.

    Seems to perform better too.

Most xbox games you can get on the PC as well, so for my money, i'd go ps4

    • +2

thing is the xbox is well behind the ball as far as engineering goes

the external psu is a good point and why the hell is it so big

and then they make you pay extra for the charge kit but the thing is… who cares

its not like a big problem… put some eneloops in it

microsoft have always been well behind sony as far as the console design goes

i'd also argue their interface is extremely poor for what is supposedly a software UI company

      • -2

Since you guys both point out so aptly the vast array of problems, weaknesses and deficiencies of these deeply disappointing game platforms, why not just go PC instead? It's clearly a better performance and gaming experience for the same money, the UI is way better, the game library is 100's of times bigger, the games are drastically cheaper and fully customisable and moddable in most circumstances. You wont get laughably conned into paying for the privilege of playing online multiplayer, plus, you can use the PC for the thousands of other things a PC does too!

Sounds like the perfect solution to both of your long list of relevant problems with the consoles.

        • forza 5 and horizon 2

i dislike driveclub but its actually not too bad

          thats it

if you can find a way to play them on PC i'd sell everything

PC just isn't an alternative to a console.

  • the only things to really consider are (in order of priority for me)

what friends do you want to play with?

what console has the exclusive titles you like?

    What controller do you prefer?

side note: this is the only place where i have seen a ps4 v xbox debate and not just had fan boys flaming one or the other
