KFC $2 Pies (Zinger and Kentucky)

570

KFC have had this deal for a few weeks, but I can't see it listed here.

Limited time, KFC are selling their Zinger pies (zinger chicken & gravy) and Kentucky pies (original chicken with mashed potato & gravy) for $2 each (retails for $4.50).

Some of the stores will only sell heated pies (not cold or frozen pies due to health regulations).

For $2, it's not a bad pie. I bought some and stocked up the work freezer.

I can't find the deal online, but my local stores (Ballarat VIC, Ararat VIC) have a sticker on display on drive-thru.

Flopped product line, selling them up quick before the use-by date?

    • +2

Have to say the pics on the menu were pretty horrifying.

I'm what you might call an adventurous eater. I've eaten hardboiled chicken stomachs, rotten soybeans and raw goat.

I'm not even a little bit tempted to try these.

      • +7

        Worst. Pies. EVER.

I can't think of anything worse and I have eaten some dodgy food through South America, Asia and India in my time.

        • +3

Agreed. Tried a Zinger pie and it had a soft microwave-like pastry and the filling tasted nothing like KFC, it just tasted like any old chicken pie mixture I could have made at home, thrown some chillis in it and cooked it in the Breville pie maker.

    • +1

It's a NZ product, that made it's way to Australia…probably an attempt to fill a perceived void in the market with the closure of many Pie Face stores. I believe it was reasonably popular in NZ, even McDonalds sells a Steak & Cheese Pie on its permanent menu over there.

But yeah, it's not a strong product line. I wouldn't buy a pie for $4.50 from KFC, or even $2

      • +4

A business is going bankrupt due to low demand?

THAT SOUNDS LIKE OUR NEXT MOVE RIGHT THERE.

  • +2

I'd be putting your local store name in the title, with possibility of other stores.

  • +1

KFC North Perth had this a couple of weeks ago, a handwritten sign on the menu board.

  • +1

Maybe not a good time (Summer) for trying a new pie line.

My local (Burwood East, Victoria) also had this. $3.95 a pie, a second for just $0.05 more, or because I had a voucher requiring minimum spend of $5, they offered 3 for $6.

Having tried, tasted quite good and I agree that at $2 a pie it's very good.

I don't know about freezing it and reheating it though?

But I'd be more interested in it for Autumn, than Summer.

    • +1

they would have a freezer with stock in it, and they thaw/cook to their planning schedule i'd say, so depending on that person serving you, depends on whether they would be okay getting from the freezer maybe…

    • +3

I haven't had any illness/issues reheating the frozen pies…. yet..

      • Um … entirely at my own risk, what would be the reheating instructions? :)

Also … how does it taste after reheating?

        • +3

I take it out of the freezer the day before, and let it defrost in the fridge. Next day for lunch, wrap it in kitchen paper towel, then into the micro for 2-3mins or until completely hot inside.
          Pastry isn't 100% crispy, but I don't mind it.

        • +2

          @Belistic:
OR, if you actually would like a nice crispy pastry, after the "next day for lunch" bit above, preheat your 'normal' oven to 180C for 10 minutes, then put the pie in for ~12-15 minutes, then remove it carefully, and eat it.

        • You can also reheat in micro from frozen, about 3 mins or so. Test with a knife. Finish under griller for crisp top.

          Btw. KFC pies? No way.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: Or under a grill after or before heating the pie in the microwave. Same result but quicker.

    • Puff pastry does not reheat well so I would not recommend it.

  • +4

There's a reason they're selling them for $2, the one I had was so watery and yuck, never having a pie there again.

    Bring back the double.

    • +3

+1 fpr the return of the Double! Why can't they make it a regular menu item?! Everyone I introduce them to is instantly hooked. I don't know anyone who doesn't like them. Odd.

      • +7

Maybe they are worried about prematurely killing their customer base?

      • Damn straight. Hash brown double is the best. Especially when you order it on a bun (all the taste without grease dripping down your arm).

It's also got less kilojouels than my regular order (5 stars box) so if anything I'm eating better than on the normal menu.

  • +6

I really quite like the Zinger ones.

    • +1

Same, though it was a tad too watery for my liking.

  • +3

Don't let these sit in the fridge and reheat next day

    = insta belly pains

    • If you "reheat" to only luke-warm, then of course this is not advisable… but if you give them a hard-core ZAP in the MW, or a decent 10-15 mins in the real oven, then there should be no problems.

      • I'm guessing you know this because of your PHD in food safety?

        • Believe it or not Sazza, that is not entirely far from the truth (the subject of my PhD I mean). Heating to above 70C for more than a couple of minutes will kill any food-borne potential pathogens (DNA/RNA itself pretty much melts at temperatures that hot), and even "heat-stable" toxins would not be a realistic concern in a KFC pie; they would not be there.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles:

I was actually making fun of your suggestion that if you want to make food safe by heating it that you would use a microwave.

Microwaves should only be used when the food is already safe or when you are happy to completely destroy the food to ensure its above the temperature you want.

Also the simple instruction of putting it into the oven for 10-15 minutes is not enough to ensure it will go above 70C either…

        • @samfisher5986:

"…the simple instruction of putting it into the oven for 10-15 minutes is not enough to ensure it will go above 70C"

You must have 'skipped ahead prematurely', and missed my sage advice earlier/above in this thread:

'… preheat your 'normal' oven to 180C for 10 minutes, then put the pie in for ~12-15 minutes, then remove it' (etc.)

I believe such a protocol would ensure that even a KFC pie would reach a temperature of >70C, throughout. Provided it was not frozen.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles:

I just wouldn't want to give anyone the wrong idea that might read your above post and not preheat the oven or put it in straight from the freezer.

My point is that food safety is very difficult unless you understand it yourself so if you do read instructions on the Internet you need them to be very precise.

        • @samfisher5986:

"My point is that food safety is very difficult … (etc.)"

Here, we differ in our opinions. My point (or rather, my opinion) is that it is not actually very difficult. That is why the vast majority of the population manages to get by without suffering a raging case of food-poisoning, from day to day. Adhere to a few simple guidelines, some standard rules of thumb, etc., and WHALLA!

          No problems.

          Usually. ;-P

        • @GnarlyKnuckles:

Well here we have differing opinions on how many people mess it up ;)

Thankfully when people do mess it up nothing major normally happens as its normally just small mistakes with cooked meat.

    • Again, this was my own doing and definitely not a recommendation to others but …

I kept 1.5 in the fridge and just ate it cold the next day (letting it sit at room temperature for a while first) on a 30+ C day.

I don't recommend it to others but I didn't get "insta belly pains"

  • +1

I had a Kentucky pie (for $2) as an extra to a Ultimate Box.

    Okay for $2 but I wouldn't pay $4.50

    Might try the Zinger one

    • Must have different prices in different states/areas. I quite like both the pies and in Mel metro stores they are $3.95 each. I did notice they were $4.95 in Townsville when I was there in Dec for work.
I think your right $4.50 is a stretch for a pie

  • I had a Kentucky one, but it wasn't worth $4.50. Then again I have had some pretty ordinary pies from 'boutique' style & they were not that great. eg: Michele's?

    • +4

      How is Michele's boutique?

      • +3

isnt micheles just run of the mill foodcourt garbage?

    • Haven't gone the Kentucky as their rehydrated potato has always tasted terrible to me.

      Quite like the Zinger though.

  • +3

I love these and for $2 even better. Nom nom nom.

  • Kentucky duck pies! :p

  • -2

Wouldn't trust them after hearing about KFC from brother when he worked there, put me off KFC the last 6 years

Filling is probably the leftovers from the day before, cut up and put into pastries then resold…

    • Depends on the KFC. The one on Richmond Rd, Blacktown NSW is the worst I've eaten at so far. Even The local (shudder) Red Rooster is better.

      • Go to stores with high-turn over and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Shopping mall KFCs and the ones in the city do a decent job.

    • +1

If they actually made the pies in store that would be amazing… but I really doubt it.

      • They are definitely not made in store.

    • What do you thing is in the rooster rolls at red rooster? Unsold chicken drowned in mayo.

  • McD $1.50 Apple Pies are much better and always $1.50

    • +9

You're comparing a dessert pie to this because….?

      • +5

        He just likes eating out

        • +6

Because desserts spelt backwards is stressed

        • Creampie is pretty satisfying.

        • @2stroksmokr:
did you get the dish'd deal? :P

    • Thuglyfe!

    • +1

$1.50???? Since they came of the dollar menu theyre like almost $3 at my local

      • We ae gettin for $1.50 in perth

  • Oath

  • Need more confirmed locations!

  • Robina, Qld has the zingers pies for $2, the kentucky ones are sold out

  • I think the Preston store at them too for $2, there was a big sign on the counter. Terrible marketing though, the blown up sign meant you could see how gross looking they were!

    • +1

Maaate, 'de-Preston' works a bit differently. Peeps there 'tell it like it is'…

  • -2

Worst pie ever, its like eating a porridge in soggy pastry. Eeeww never again…

Slightly off topic to get away from crappy KFC pies.
If you are in Sydney, you should visit this beautiful little gem pie shop at Collaroy: Sylvia & Frans Upper Crust pies. I reckon its probably the best pies in Sydney, way better than Harry's!

    • Harry's is good? I thought harrys was even more aweful than pie face

      • But Harry's is way way better than KFC pies, no?

I didn't tried Pie Face yet.

    • +1

I know Rolf's in Victoria are good. But with only one store.

Getting back to it, this is talking about a $2 pie.

      • -1

        Bu… but… $2 or not… that is NOT a pie. It is a porridge cake! :D

        • :) True … this is a … gravy rich pie with a few pieces of KFC chicken in it …

Still, I've also liked Four'n'Twenty in the past, which was a gravy rich pie so … I'm not fussed :)

(and Rolf's are not generally gravy rich pies, I should clarify)

        • +1

          @foundit:
To me 4'20 are the absolute worst. Havnt had one for about 10 years since I chewed into a random hoof/snout/bone…or whatever that was. Put me off for life. I do like ferguson plairre pies and sausage rolls.

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:

Errrrk that would put me off … even hearing about it …

I do like Ferguson Plairre :)

  • Karawara in WA has them going for $2. Probs trying to beat the use by date.

  • Can anyone confirm this is in SA too?

    • +1

I just called Payneham and Eastwood and both stores said they're not selling them till the cricket starts on Thursday, they said there's a new promotion starting then (possibly $2 pies) and they were told they're not allowed to sell them until the promo starts

      • Ah I see. Thanks

        • Got one yesterday at the Payneham store, they only had the Kentucky pies available though.
The girl said they we're selling them cheap as they had too many in the warehouse
          Not bad for $2

  • hey guys, still deserves my +1 because its a good deal but unfrounately Baulkham Hills NSW has sold out of all pies.

if someone lives nearby and can let me know of a close one that has them would be great

  • The Pie was good!. Inala, Brisbane buy any item and your able to purchase two pie's for 4.

  • No pies at 2 stores on Princes Hwy Dandenong/Noble Park. It was considered a delicacy there.

  • All south east KFC sold out the pies.
