Used to love AVG, but it became too intrusive.

    • +3

lots of interet security/ anti virus companies started good but devolve into annoying intrusive and CPU hogging programs when they become popular…

i remember Mcafee when they were good- kaspersky isn't too bad atm- price is reasonable

      • +3

Im using NOD 32. Still very good on resources.

      • +3

Except ESET Nod32, been using it for like 8 or so years

        • +2

Yes, but correct me if I'm wrong, they only have a 30-days trial version, no free version is available.

        • Remember, the 50% off eset nod32 deal ends in a few days.

    • Any good (and free) alternatives?

      • +2

I switched from AVG Free to BitDefender Free to get away from the spam. It's free and hides away in the notification area.

      • 360 internet security …. no ads— no nags, lightweight, triple scanning engines

        review
        http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/360-Internet-Security…

        • I doubt the 360ssecurity, annoying pop-ups and backdoor running

        • @mushtato: there's no annoying pop ups whats so ever .it may tell you a programme is trying to run at start up,you allow or block — allow if its a trusted software, that's it ,pray tell whats the back door running? updating or contacting the cloud scanner
what is it that you know & no other forums or individuals know?

        • @mushtato:
lol, probably Baidu or a competitor scare mongering, I have been on this with my clients for over 2 years & never had any problems

quoted text—- We don't steal private or confidential information," he said. “Further, we are the only internet security product that has been certified by all four major international testing labs that specifically test security software. In China we are the only internet security software company that has been certified by all four major international labs. We follow a very strict standard in developing our products."

& what do you think about backdoors on most major A/V's O/S & software that the USA have bought their way into to monitor homeland security etc

& what were the annoying pop up's you failed to mention?

        • @rickxs: lol. I've been reading articles about this, and recently a book from Qihoo360 CEO. I'll stick with my NOD32 ;P

Same here …. Used AVG (failed to detect some viruses), then Switched to Avast (it was good), then switched to ESET (the best so far) and loving it ….

  • +1

Great! Just had to add the key in my free version and it worked :) Thanks!

    • +1

Same here. Worked with my AVG installed arround 3-4 years ago.

  • +5

    God, why would you bother?

  • Used AVG full version for years and it does the job and I am very happy with it. Recently clicked on a linkedin invite, should have known better at my age - had my name on the invite - AVG jumped in and saved the day. Recommended. Thanks for posting.

Installed previous deal just a few days ago & activated successfully even though it was downloaded about a month ago. It was supposed to be 1 year license but when I checked the expiry, it says 26 Feb 2018. 3 years license!

    • Same experience here. That deal was an exceptional one. It may well still work.

  • Great find.. Thanks !

  • awesome find …many thanks mate

    1. You can use a fake email as the key + download links are on the next page. The email is used for shareware deal spam.

    2. AV-Comparatives provides independent tests on popular AV software. Compare AVG against the one you are currently using.

AVG used to be the leader in free anti-virus. Had it installed on all my Win XP machines
Then they changed. Every time you opened a program or downloaded something, it was there in your face.
    Got rid of it wholesale.
It would take a lot more than a free 1 yr subscription to get me back on board

I was concerned about this too, because almost all "free" A-V products (except Microsoft Security Essentials) can be like this because they are vehicles for up-selling.

However, on the previous offer I have installed AVG Internet Security 2015 with a key to turn it from the "free" version to a "zero-cost licensed" version as in this offer, and I also un-ticked a couple of options on install, one being the e-mail scanner (webmail users don't need this) and the important one being another component whose name I can't remember but it is something like a Windows "cleaner" or optimiser. It is this latter component that seems to contain the advertising.
I may have also un-ticked the installation of a toolbar - generally, browser toolbars that change the search engines and intercept browsing activity are not a good idea.

Since that time, the zero-cost AVG has been silent - no advertising, nothing intrusive at all. Really good, in fact, with one exception that, after a few weeks, it says your computer could benefit from cleaning/optimising and it offers to install this same component, at which point you decline and it stays silent.

I checked some league tables of A-V performance before installing AVG this time and, although these tests vary from time to time, it came out around the top in terms of detection ability. I think it was this review site http://www.av-comparatives.org amongst others.

We have AVG Internet Security 2015 installed on multiple Win 7 machines and so far it has done everything correctly. We previously used Microsoft Security Essentials which was good but has been slipping down the tables in terms of detection for some time.

Vulnerabilities can exist in your web browser as well, if you haven't heard of hacking events and contests like Pwn2Own or Pwnium, these have shown that common software like Firefox, IE, Chrome, Java, etc. can be exploited and be used to gain remote access to a computer.

In other words, your computer could be infected just from you visiting a website, including a website that you trust. Without an antivirus, you may not have the means to detect when malicious code is being run because you don't have a tool that will allow Windows to inspect what the code is doing to your system.

if you have a Mac then maybe its okay but if its a PC then good luck

    • You're crazy. If you see the logs that come through on an anti virus program, with a system that's sitting there idle, you'd change your stance quick smart.

    • +11

Forget about the AV Program. You should concentrate on finding all those lost commas and full stops.

    • -2

Wow cheers for wasting your negs for God know what reason.

Maybe I should include the fact that I don't do stupid stuff on my pc to get viruses. Or how but the fact that the last time I used avg i got a darm virus that it didn't detect so I'd to use another AV.

I see the grammar nazi is on patrol.

      • +3

Ummm… commas and full stops are actually punctuation.

        • -4

Ummm… no one cares grow up and stop bitching every time someone doesnt use a comma or full stop

  • Im wondering if this is any better than Avast….. they all seem the same but a free upgrade is nice.

  • I wanted 2 keys and guess what, I received the same key!

    Is this fake?

    • I try with 2 different mails and the keys was different.

  • My new PC has windows 8 and I use security essentials. Is this good enough for basic browsing or should I get AVG?
I don't go to dodgy sites or click on links but occasionally leave the PC on when unattended.

    • +1

If you don't g to dodgy sites and you don;t let the grandkids at your PC then that should be fine. That's all I have on the laptop and I've had no issues.

      • +1

        Thanks,
I have a 2 yr old and newborn so I'm safe for a few years then.
I get lots of spam emails in my spam folder though. What causes that?

Here is the honest reply: Microsoft Security Essentials is not enough protection!

I don't mean to be a scare monger but When MS themselves suggest that you install 3rd party security software on top of MSE then you listen: http://lifehacker.com/microsoft-admits-that-third-party-anti…

MSE used to be great but it costs millions of dollars to maintain security software and MS have simply stopped making the investment.

This doesn't mean you have to pay money. There are plenty of quality free security software such as avast! Free Antivirus, Avira Free AntiVirus, Bitdefender Antivirus, Malwarebytes (free version lacks real time protection but the full scan is still great).

I used to work for Symantec and before I left I generated a lot of codes for personal use. Norton has a bad rep for making bloated software but their current stuff is world class.

If I had to pay then I would probably get Kaspersky, Symantec (I do think it is worth paying for), Avira or Trend Micro.

I would stay clear of AVG, even if it is for free. Take a look at the latest AV-test comparison: http://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

At the end of the day, whether or not you think security software is worth it depends on how much you value your PC and the information stored on it. At the very least, install one of the many free programs I listed above (I would recommend Bitdefender + Malwarebytes for full scans).

MSE and AVG have dropped the ball and I would not touch it for the fact that it will give you a false sense of security.

  • Free AVG was the choice for all my PCS in the days of Windows 95 but seeing 150Mb - even thou free can't see me going back, that is 150MB of bloated software that will certainly slow down your PC. Now using Immunet FREE Antivirus (http://www.immunet.com/free/index.html) Interface not much to write about but is free, efficient, lightweight, cloud base and i reckon better than security essential.
One piece of software that I paid for is Malwarebytes (https://www.malwarebytes.org/) Software has save my butt few time already. Also has Comodo Firewall on my Windows 7 PC. Can't have enough protection.
I don't believe in all in one package. Antivirus, firewall, malware together. A handyman that does everything is not always better than specialize trademan that focus on one skill.

  • Excellent, detailed article from dotTech comparing free editions of Avira vs avast! vs AVG vs Panda Cloud vs Bitdefender vs Microsoft Security Essentials: http://dottech.org/14151/windows-best-free-antivirus-antimal…
In summary: "there are too many moving parts for us to tell you what is the best free anti-virus program for you". It is worth reading full article!

  • What's the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit versions?

    • the ability to be actually used by your particular system's architecture

  • 64 bit for 4gb ram and above i assume

  • So they are the same in term of the functions?

  • Stop surfing porn sites - no viruses.

  • Love it

  • This gave me tons of adware. Do do the international version.

  • What does "Do do the international version." mean

So in a years time when the program locks up and they chase you to pay up or remove it, was it worth it ?

  • How to get the android version of it for mobiles and tablets???

  • Unfortunately it tells me that the code has expired on my PC already.

Would having the free 30 day trial count as using the code?
