IR Night Vision Car DVR - $12.99 USD - TMART - 150 available

91

Abnout as cheap as a car DVR gets

Crapper than the other ones on here, but, it's less than 1/2 of the price of the target one recently posted, but not twice as crap.

items that'll get you running up full
old nokia style battery (BL-4C) (not actually needed but good for keeping the settings)
16 or 32GB micro SD card

all up, will cost you less than $30 nowadays

for those procrastinating about getting a car DVR, DO IT IMMEDIATLEY
even the cheapest, nastiest one out there's better than nothing at all,

I've personally been caught out once where an old guy blatantly lied about what happened (he pulled out in front of me)
after that, I bought a camera,
have put many near misses up on youtube, a few of which, if an accident would have happened, would have been determined as my fault by the insurance

Guys, think about your excess, it's probably $300 or more,
this crappy camera could well save you having to pay that if your insurance claim goes 'each bares own costs' as they all to regularly seem to do nowadays

    AU$16.40

  • Have you tried this camera? I have and in my opinion it's worth spending a little extra $ to get a decent one.

I agree something is better than nothing at all but this really is as close to nothing as you can get.

  • I just ordered 2. At that price, they are throw aways.
Another 12months you will get a $120 one for $20 so good fit in the meantime.
    (Thanks Bleugh)

At that price, they are throw aways.

A good thing, because you'll soon be throwing it away when it fails, or maybe works half the time.
I won't make the same mistake again :(

edit: beaten by adifoto below. Thats 2 of us so far who regret buying these before.

      • +1

I got 2 by gift, both failed in a short period
1 send for warranty, and replacement failed after less than a year use
the other one, failed shortly after out of box……

still, appreciated it for OP sharing the deal! :-)

  • Not used it, though am tempted to get one. Ive seen the YouTube videos. It's 'alright'

However, Spend twice as much, get something a bit better…
Spend four times as much, get the GW camera which is a fair bit better
Spend ten times as much, then you're talking a picture that's significantly better, much sharper, clearer and true 1080p

Spend twenty times as much, get a cheap gopro…..

Yep, it's usually better to spend more to get more

  • Pretty sure this is the same camera that I have mounted in my car, think I might have bought it from some cheapy website, it works well enough for what I need it for.. if I wanted better quality I'd stick my GoPro to my windshield.

  • Just ordered 2 and for the price I am not expecting the world but if it does what it's meant to, it's $33 well spent.

I'll probably get my 2 batteries for $3.95 each off Ebay if anyone else is chasing some or if anyone can recommend cheaper or better:

  • When the micro sd card costs more than the dash cam it's time to stop & have a good hard look at yourself.
Why don't you put the AU price of $16.40 in the title?

    • +4

have a good hard look at yourself.

      using your dash cam?

    • If it sets your worried mind at ease you can find plenty of 32GB SD cards much cheaper than the price of this dash cam.

  • I have one of this and are not reliable. Not talking about the video quality (that is ok). It suppose to start when you turn one your car well will, not all the time mine after 3 weeks will not start anymore. The battery that come with will not charge, i fully charge mine for the first time it took around 2h but in car the battery was all the time low. Another function is loop recording i set it to record in continues loop an keep the recording for 15 minutes it worked on the beginning now will start and after few minutes will say card full.
Maybe mine has problems and not all are same i was happy that i only payed AU$15 from Tmart.

    • there's no battery that comes with it…have you a different one?

      • Yes it does, next to the mounting screw is a sliding door under that is a battery. I had to reset it so many times i can open it with my yes close.

  • I bought a $5 mount and am using my mobile as a car dvr.

  • So is this on special or normal price AU$16.40?

    • It indicates normal price is AU$42.81

      • +4

Yeah but this is Ozbargain & we are professionals.

  • I have this camera, for anyone interested. Fairly decent I guess. Automatically turns on when the car turn on and turns back off when the car is off. I'd recommend using an SD card of 16GB or greater, as it can glitch up sometimes while doing its loop recording and not delete old files. Once the card is full it refuses to function properly.

Go pros/phones are useless at night unless you want to manually adjust the contrast, which causes other problems. If you have to mount it, change the settings you probably wont use it long term

a G1WH is about $45 us, night is meh but some plates can be read. Switching from day/night when driving through shadows is useless

G90 is about $69, night is good and what I would say minimum should be, plates can be read even with minimal light. Switching from day/night is instant. Even though its 1080p as well, day time clarity is atleast 25% better and night time is atleast 50%

If all you need is to prove your not at fault any cam will do. But to get the plate of someone who does a hit and run in the opposite direction of travel the G1's will do it in day and it will be 50/50 at night. Then the more expensive cams will generally get the plate.

$120 cams will never be $20, or even 50% off as it will no longer be viable or worthwhile to make. G1's have been around for what, 2 years? Price is pretty steady for genuine ones. In 1-2 years they will be no longer viable compared to the current market

    • where do you find G90 for $69?

  • used some Tmart points to get it down to $14.76 AUD.

already have BL-4C battery and spare 16gb microsd card.

    thanks OP

  • I picked up this camera last time,,absolute junk( quality of picture is more like 480, menu options reset themselves when power is turned off even with the battery installed) but the suction cup mount works a treat, 14bux for mount and lead ? nahhhhh,,,ended up being refunded

    • btw night vison on this is useless unless you wave your hand directly infront of the camera you see nothing

  • -2

Thanks for the neg guys, the negative comments too!

it's crap, but $16.40 of crap that someone may be able to afford over the $50 G1W

    • They don't need to spend that much.
$39.00 will buy you a very decent full hd dash cam from Target - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/177836

      • Lol, you need to read all the posts here!
that $39 one isn't twice as good, yet costs more than twice as much

        • This is my 5th comment in this thread, do you really think I haven't read everything?

You can't use this dash cam as base to compare against other models when 4 reviews are this bad. -
*PowerB says "Once the card is full it refuses to function properly"
*Warmbeer05 says "absolute junk, menu options reset themselves when power is turned off even with the battery installed"
*adifoto says "after 3 weeks will not start anymore. The battery that come with will not charge. Loop recording won't work"
*manic says "Thats 2 of us so far who regret buying these before"

The $39.00 target model really is the entry level for a reliable dash cam that will work and has a local warranty.

        • @luke73:

Totally agree with you there, $39 for local supply, local warranty, tested…….that is a far better deal……….

however, just to be an awkward bugger (TM) ,
buy TWO of the TMART ones, if one fails, you're still up seven bux with a not dissimilar perfomrance device and have some spares to play with ;-)

apologies for not seeing you've posted a few times

  • $300 for car excess? Never heard of that… mine is $550 I think which is fairly standard. In my 15 years of driving I've never been in a situation where having a dash cam would have helped with an insurance claim (or should I say, determined the outcome of the claim), but I still use one for other reasons (road rage incidents, etc).

    • +1

My dash camera helped one guy who was in front of me avoid a big bill. He was changing lane and a motorbike took off from a give way road and smashed into left side of his car. Without my footage it hard for him to win the case.
Dash cam doesn't cost a lot of money, it may or may not help in some case but I think it worth to invest

  • it's just a cheap version of the DVR-207/027: http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/dvr-207-dvr-207gs-review/

I have bought 3 of these (not from TMART, but same specs and design)…

1st one lasted 12 mths - was great…but due to UV and heat, the suction holder warped and the screw tightener no longer could tighten. suction cup and heat = always falling off. the last time it fell off, it broke the usb charging port of the IC board. So in the bin it went.

2nd one I bought was to replace it…after being in the sun for 3 days of 30+ deg temp, the lens fogged up and that was the end of that one…

3rd one I bought for my old man, the record/loop function would not work, regardless of how many factory rests or change in SD cards (Class 4 to 10)…so that was rubbish too.

My 2 cents - spend a bit more and buy the G1WC model…it is a bit more expensive but walks all over this one. Also, make sure u buy at least a Class 10 micro Sd card.

Sure, it's cheap…Buy it as your 1st cam and get familiar to having a dashcam…then upgrade again.
