DGTEC Projector AND 84" Screen for $149 @ Kmart Victoria Gardens, VIC

440

Found this at Kmart Victoria Gardens/Richmond. now $149 due to their Clearance sales. I'd guess that this is nation-wide. Contains projector (480p, hdmi input) in box 1 and 84" screen in box 2. I didn't pick it up myself but
I'm sure someone will find this useful.

Photos (including tech specs of the projector) are here

Update: as @awesomerc96 says below, you should call your local Kmart and quote the code (keycode 4208827) to see if they have stock. Thanks for the tip!

Incredibly low resolution (640x480), but for $149 plus a screen, good deal for some. e.g. young kids won't care about 720/1080p.

    • +1

Yeah, it'll be awful picture quality compared to a real home cinema projector or even a TV, but at $150 with screen, it'd be useful for some things.

Might be fine for a footy match or Mario kart tournament (as long as it's dark enough).

      • +1

I used to have a different brand with similar specs. It was fine for sitting in the garage watching car racing or whatever with mates and beers. Likely wouldn't have been real popular if I'd unplugged the 55" LED and carted it out there…

      • +1

Back in the 90's my first projector was 320x200 resolution. The pixels were massive on a 100" screen (about 1CM square), but you could still see the image fairly well from a distance.

$149 is such a low price, especially given the bonus screen, that I still consider this a deal.
Although I can imagine people who find they like the big picture, soon spending $600 for an entry level 1080p projector.

  • +1

$10 off purchase, not sure how it works or how long it takes

    edit: online only :(

and I now realise it says $10 off shipping the heat is getting to me

  • +1

save your money and put it towards a real one, this is a pendo pad projector equivalent

  • -8

I wouldn't touch this thing with that resolution, stay a mile away, ANYONE would notice the low quality

Edit - this works out to 10PPI. 10 freaking PPI. Absolutely terrible.

    • +15

I guess when you eat a Maccas cheeseburger you bitch about it not stacking up against an expensive restaurant made meal too?

      • +7

a benq w1000 is more like a maccas cheeseburger, this is scraps from the garbage

      • +4

I never said that the price doesn't justify it, but it's like paying $5 for a smartphone that can only make phone calls. Just because it's justified, doesn't mean you should buy it.

        • +4

I would never buy it as it would absolutely not suit my needs.

But I realize that I'm not the only person in this world. Someone might want it for the kids to watch cartoons somewhere. Or watch the occasional game or show outdoors during a bbq.

Spending $1,000 for a HD projector and screen might not make sense to many people for those situations. Something like this could be just right for that. It's not a ripoff, it's just a low-resolution projector for an equally low price.

I wouldn't tell someone not to buy a used $2,000 car simply because they can get a much better car for $15,000. Of course $15k would get a better car - but not everyone can or wants to spend 7.5x more.

        • -4

@eug: I completely understand, but this projector is plain unusable. At least a cheapo car would get you where you need to go. 10 PPI is absolutely unusable. Just my two cents, some might not mind the PPI.

        • +10

@deanylev: Woah woah woah, have you ever used a 480p projector before? I still have one from a while back, and it is still totally usable.

Terrible use of a neg, much ignorance.

        • @deanylev: Say that to a Chery owner, I dare you

        • @deanylev: Funny, a few comments back there is someone using one I think. With even less resolution. So - useable.

        • @Giteau: Is it on an 84" screen?

        • +3

          @eug:

But I realize that I'm not the only person in this world.

          Agreed.

It never ceases to utterly astound me just how few OzBargainers are able to grasp this very simple concept.

        • -1

          @eug:

Going with the car example you wouldn't recommend to someone to buy a $400 death trap car though. Likely regardless of how much they need a car.

You'd tell them to scrounge up a bit of extra cash to get something that they're not going to die in or that's going to cost more than a $2000 car to operate due to repairs and stuff.

Sure you could argue 'someone would have a use for it' like a metal scrapper.

But with that line of reasoning, there's going to be someone who has a use for something that you're even willing to pay to dispose of. It's a question of is it worth it.

Back to the item in question, sure some people would love the item. But I think for most people they'll realize after purchase that the item isn't going to be used due to it's poor quality and thus what looked good at $150 is going to turn into storage fodder and they should have threw in an extra few hundred to get something good.

        • +1

@natsumezoku: I guess it's inevitable that some people will miss the point with the car example.

          Kitchen knives might be closer.

Companies like Wusthof and Global make quality knives. But not everyone needs or appreciates them. Those who are into cooking will likely appreciate them more.

Meanwhile, many people are perfectly satisfied with their Wiltshire knives from Coles. They might get blunt more quickly, corrode more easily, and have poorer balance… but people who don't care that much about cooking or can't justify spending 10x more wouldn't mind at all.

Would you go to all those people who are satisfied with their $15 knives and tell them they're silly for wasting $15 because a Global is only $150? Even if they only cook once a month, they should spend $150 on a knife because it's better in ways they really don't care about?

Ten years ago a 480p projector would have been perfectly fine. What happened in the past ten years that humans are unable to accept 480p anymore?

You might find it unacceptable and that's fine. I wouldn't dream of using a 480p projector myself. But there are different people in this world, and not everyone cares about 480/720/1080p. Did you know that people still watch DVDs on projectors? How could they??

        • -1

          @eug:

In the example of knives no, the majority of people will be happy with a $15 knife and they wont find that it's a piece of junk because it does the job people paid for it to do.

The question is where is the line for 'what is the value of what it does vs what I paid for it' get crossed?

There are different people in this world sure. The point I was trying to make is there will be people who have uses for everything in this world even garbage.

Some people still use CRT monitors due to refresh rates and color fidelity. And yet you can't even give them away to an op shop because no one (technically not enough people) will want it to make it worth it.

A CRT monitor wasn't only fine 15 years ago, it was state of the art. What changed? Technology changed, and thus the value of technology changes. Just because someone would have a use for it, doesn't mean it's value for money or a bargain.

So where does that line get crossed?

edit: Based on the fact that people have snapped up stock and the item being sold out quickly, I have to concede that this is a bargain (Assuming el-cheapo bulbs and stuff doesn't come to a premature death). The imgur pics taken from Whirlpool forums makes it look decent too.

        • @natsumezoku:

The question is where is the line for 'what is the value of what it does vs what I paid for it' get crossed?

Well… my point was that different people are different, so the line totally depends on the individual person. What knife is good enough? What car is good enough? It totally depends on the person's needs and wants, and how much they care about the additional benefits that spending maybe 7x more will bring.

        • @eug:

Totally, but then there's also a bottom end threshold where for the vast majority of people the quality of an item is too poor to be regarded as a bargain, regardless of 'some people may want it'.

For example no one is going to post a knife from a $2 shop as a bargain.

Nor are they going to post a piece of crap dumb phone for $15 as a bargain, even though that is exactly ideal for a significant number of people.

It's not 'is it good enough for some people to buy and use', it's 'is it a bargain'?

And I'll be honest with you, I was interested in buying one myself, but I didn't consider it a bargain. But from the number of post of people rushing out to buy one I had to re-evaluate if people thought this was a bargain or not.

        • @kabigon:

I'm convinced that was up-voted as a joke item.

Besides, HOW DARE YOU CALL THE NOKIA 3310 A PIECE OF CRAP!? :p

Pretty sure I have one of those lying around still somewhere. Not that exact one but a few models before it.

    • +6

It's not that bad, considering the price. The gamecube, Wii, PS2, and original xbox were all 480p. Most Australian TV is still not HD.

It's not a replacement for a large HDTV or a real projector, but it doesn't need to be at this price. There are some people who could use it.

        • +1

Because not everyone has the same requirements as you.

        • +7

resolution of this is less than FTA TV.

FTA SD is 720x576i, negligible difference.

    • +2

You can raise it to 16PPI by projecting at the minimum 50".

  • But it says it supports 720p resolution in the tech specs?
And the screen alone would be close to $100 wouldn't it?

    • +3

It will accept 720p but it will not display at 720p. It will be scaled down to 640x480.

    • +1

Just saw the 80 inch 4:3 screen at Aldi for $24.99 (half price clearance) so….

  • +11

VERY Limited stock, this must have been hanging around since the surprise buys catalogue in October. Most stores will be out of stock, but when calling ask them to check up keycode 42088271 and they can check on the system if they have stock, plus if any other local stores have stock.

    • +1

thanks for the info! Happy hunting in this sweltering heat (for those in SA/NSW/vic.

  • +1

I got the last one at Victoria gardens

    • +7

Congrats! I left it just for you :)

  • +2

I don't understand the negging, its $149. What's better than this for $149?

    • +2

Just because there nothing better doesnt mean this is a "good" deal.
at that resolution i wouldnt buy it if it were $50 (not exaggerating either)

      • I wouldn't buy it at $50 either. Like most people I don't need one of these, as I already have a proper HD projector.

But I'm not the only person in the world.

Some people don't have a screen bigger than 32" in their house. Some people just want to have the footy or the Wii on the big screen out in the garage or playroom for the occassional get-together.

Some of those people can't spend $600 on an entry level decent projector NO MATTER WHAT. They just don't have the money.

This is probably a good product for them, and a good deal.

    • I think that is the point, everything better is more expensive. Ever heard "you get what you pay for"?

      • +2

According to this page its an inappropriate use of a neg.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

And going by your philosophy, what the heck you doing on a bargain finding site?

        • White van projector scam and you removed my neg

      • Have you actually paid for this projector to quantify your conclusion?

      • LOL, you think its 480p?

  • +3

I have an old projector which is 480p and it cost me more than $4000 12 years ago. It is still watchable, imagine when DVD was 480p. Yes, it looks bad compare to 1080p, but projector and screen at this price is very cheap. Just not for everyone. If you source is 480p or worse (DVD), Wii etc. Why not?

    • +1

You are completely right, people were very happy to pay numerous 1000's for a projector less capable years ago, and now its suddenly unusable. Hopefully they don't watch FTA TV.

    • Dvd is 576I, get it right

  • Anyone else hit this?

  • +6

Who cares about resolution… most people who buy FHD or 4k TVs just watch FreeToAir or play Dvds anyway. Picture quality is sooooo much more than just resolution.

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2317439

From the pictures it actually looks pretty good.

    • +1

Good find, I guess this is sufficient enough for my little ones to enjoy Disney classics in the backyard.
It's a lot cheaper than the inflatable ones offered by BigW.

  • OP, what was the other item that you bought for $59?

    • Quality is perfectly fine if you are going to be using it for minor casual uses. It's just that people's expectations have been increased over time & will continue to (ie. ppl now more picky).

Once you have experienced a large display you will more often than not avoid using a smaller one if you can, especially for gaming IMHO. Saying this having used projectors back when they'd cost you an arm & a leg, you really appreciate do it more.

On another note, I doubt that its actually 2200lm as the room needed to be/looks fairly dark for it to be that clear & not washed out.

  • +2

The teenagers on the product box seem to be happy with the resolution. Then again they look like they are from Estonia or somewhere similar.

    • +3

The guy on the left looks Albanian.

    • -5

The 2 girls on the right need to be punched in the nickers! Lefty….not so much.

      • +3

Way to go promoting violence against women. Douche.

You didn't even pick the cutest one.

        • -3

          You are the DOUCHE buddy.

Absolutely NOTHING to do with violence.

Think about it before you spout off without a clue.

    • In eastern europe projector watches you, nyet?

  • +1

this would be fine for back yard family movie nights.

    • +4

That's right. More time spent killing mosquito's than critically analyzing projection resolution.

  • -1

playing mindcraft on this thing will look awesome!

    • -1

"mindcraft"?… new game I'm not aware of?

  • No stock at Airport West (VIC) - Great deal IMO.

  • +1

Just spoke to a kmart representative and they are pretty much all sold out in NSW. They tried to find one for a customer a few weeks ago and it took them a few days and had to call around 30 stores to locate one

  • +1

Got last one at Logan(QLD), 2nd store I called.

  • +1

Pretty good picture quality, but the fans in the unit are loud.

  • I'm going to make a Sega Daytona cabinet with this. Awesome find.
