On the contrary…One of my favourite sci fi movies of 2014, IMO!

      • +14

Agreed, despite Tom Cruise being one of my least favourite actors, he came to the party more than once in 2014 and this was by far the best one. I loved it, easily top 3 sci-fi of 2014 (and I'm struggling to think of 2 which beat it).

        • -6

yup. him and his Scientology bullshit. so mindless

        • -6

@holden93: Guardians of the Galaxy is infantile garbage for 12 year olds and Instellar gets so lost in the intricacies of FTL/Blackhole time dilation that it forgets to actually tell a meaningful story, other than an American redneck being the saviour of all mankind because perpetual dust storms gave his family a nasty cough.

Agreed, despite Tom Cruise being one of my least favourite actors,

The dude's still a fine actor.

Hollywood is an incredibly fcked up place populated by a whole host of people who in any other line of work would be considered scum by most. E.g. Mark Wahlberg who viciously assaulted two men in a racially-motivated attack, leaving one permanently blinded in one eye. Russell Crowe has acted like a Saturday-night bogan in public more times than I can count and gotten himself arrested, but it's okay because he's a Tru-Blu, Aussie Battler (*from New Zealand).

And yet Tom Cruise is somehow the posterboy for hate because of his belief system. Compared to most of the psychotics, drug-addled junkies and ego-maniacs, he's actually almost normal.

        • +2

@Amar89: Both movies beat this one on both IMDB and Rotten tomatoes.
So i think it's fair to say that that's entirely your own opinion.

Personally i like any and every scifi movie lol i'm as massive fan of all scifi some more then others.

also i'm not even going to try and understand why my post above got negged.
i only listed some great movies this year.

        • +5

This movie is based off a Japanese light novel, All You Need is Kill.

for those who haven't read it, should, it's rated very highly on Amazon.

The manga (comic book) is also a very enjoyable read too.

        • @scrimshaw:
Technically, both the movie and the manga were based on the same novel as I remember.

The manga was by my favorite author who also drawn Death Note & Hikaru No Go, etc.
I think the manga was better than the movie as it has more details, but I watched the manga first so I might be biased anyway.

        • @sheepy: I assume you mean read (not watched) the manga.

        • @Amar89: Sorry dude- accidently negged when I mean't to positive.

        • -1

          @holden93:

          • One, I never said I was a fan of Edge of Tomorrow; I was criticising Guardians of the Galaxy and Interstellar.

          • Two, IMDb/Rotten Tomatoes ratings are not arbiters of a film's artistic merit nor do high ratings invalidate massive and gaping plot inconsistencies and horrible scriptwriting. They're at best indications of film popularity and even then, only through a thoroughly American film palate. The discrepancies between IMDb domestic/foreign rankings are amazing.

          • also i'm not even going to try and understand why my post above got negged.

They're sh*t films. Don't be afraid to try and reason a justification for liking something, rather than just running with the lemmings.

        • @Amar89: That is entirely YOUR opinion.
one man's opinion doesn't not means something is bad.
a whole lot of opinions (IMDB for example) does.

I negged you only cause i disagree

Also don't take this that i rate them movies so high to be my favorite movies they are far from it. lol
Iwas just rating them out of this years movies alone.

Can you tell me what YOU think is better scifi movies of 2014?

        • @Amar89: Whoa, didn't realise my little comment had attracted so much attention. FWIW I agree with your initial response to me, I think some got confused with what you were actually criticizing, that or you are now suffering the "jv effect" (-25 votes for saying hello)

The dude's still a fine actor.

Agreed. My wording was poorly chosen. I generally dislike the guy, I think he's a real odd ball (I wish I had a better reason, but I form this opinion from the stereotypical reasons you mentioned)

That said, he's a fine actor indeed. He would feature a number of times in my top-100 movies.

Hollywood is an incredibly fcked up place populated by a whole host of people who in any other line of work would be considered scum

Absolutely no argument from me, when you look at it like that, Tom is a much better specimen of a human being lol.

I haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy, it never appealed to me despite loving the sci-fi genre. I'm very much looking forward to Interstellar, obviously cant make comparisons yet.

      • -6

The movie is ok but no where near a great movie.

    • +4

      IMDB: 8/10
      Rotten Tomatoes: 9/10
      Metacritic: 71/100

You have no idea what you are talking about, it's a fantastic movie and the aggregated scores show this.

      • -1

Whether or not it is a good movie, I don't know. But showing popular opinion just reveals popular opinion, whether it is good or not is objective.

        • The beauty is that you're watching and enjoying it in an infinite number of other realities! Did anyone wonder what happens to everyone else in all those 'realities' after maggot dies? Life goes on? Without Tom Cruise? Surely not?

Here's some other top time travel movies you may like to consider.

        • @muncan: When maggot dies, time is being reseted. So there Should not be other realities in existence after the reset. From physics point of view, there is only one thing continuous in the universe, that is time.

        • @bargainaus: I forgot time could be reset. Physics 101. We've got a 12 o'clock flasher here…

Do you think time is reset instantaneously, or is the reset tasked to a background process, that fritters away on the reset job when it has free processing cycles? And how long does it take to reset time? Can that be measured in a period of time also? So many unanswered questions.

        • @muncan: We are discussing a fictional movie plot here, not Physics itself! In reality time can not be reseted, if it was possible I'd have taken the shot a long time ago :)

According to the plot, each time Cruise dies, time (the day) is being reseted. And since time is not discrete, that reality will reset too, resulting in no parallel realities in existence.

        • @bargainaus: I'd much rather discuss theoretical physics than movie spoilers. Did you know that there's an infinite amount of time between two seconds? Amazing, huh? So when someone tells you they don't have enough time, we should correct them (and retreat quickly).

        • @muncan: I'm very much open to discuss theoretical physics but this is not the appropriate site/thread. The thing is I enjoyed the movie, I don't care about ratings and I can accept bit of pseudo-physics for a good movie with excellent storytelling. For example, I liked Iron Sky (2012) over any other sci-fi that year, and its a B movie from an independent production.

        • @bargainaus: OK I'll play along. What about Interstellar? I'd give that a 10 if they'd hurry up the start a little. Maybe one day movie ratings will go the way of an Amazon-styled 'if you liked this you'll also like this' non-discriminatory personalised rating system. Then why stop at movies. If you like this friend, then you'll also like this stranger. Oh my!

        • @muncan: Well surprise surprise, I have not seen Interstellar yet, so can't comment on that. Personally, I don't like to go to theaters (You can't rewind or rewatch to understand the plot a bit better), I like to watch at my home on Blu Ray. Guess I'll wait for it then :)

  • +6

Most enjoyable movie of 2014 on my list. Had a smirk on my face the whole movie.

    • +5

Gotta love how many times cruise dies ;)

  • -1

    cool movie!!! +++

  • +1

Was a great movie! Always loved Groundhog Day too :)

    • +3

Groundhog day was and is an awesome movie lol

  • Yup great movie and even better in 3d

  • Yup, good fillum. Tom Cruise dies umpteen times and Emily Brunt.

    • Yeah it's tip top

    • +7

How about try and not give anything away for those who haven't seen it?

      • -3

If you can work out the ending from what I said your a mind reader, you sound like a whinging pom.

  • +4

$11 when you buy it as part of Sanity's 5 for 55 deal. Only the stock left in stores though cause its discontinued. 2D still available at Sanity online for the same price.

  • Thanks OP, was discussing this only today.

  • AFAIK the 3D has always been the same price as the standard version. I know this because I never buy 3D and only bought this movie on 3D because it was the same price. I commend every company involved in making them the same price. Unlike Marvel movies which are $40 or more per 3D.

  • +5

Great movie. One of the best movies of 2014.

    • -1

Big call - Boyhood, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Equalizer are my top 3 ATM but will watch this before the year's out.

  • -2

The quality of 3D in this is horrible, absolutely horrible! Put the 3D disc in a microwave asap.
On the other hand, this comes with a 2D disc as well. The image quality is incredible, as is the 5.1 and musical score. Easily my favorite Sci Fi of 2014.

      • -1

Surprising because I have to say it felt like most of the 3D was simply for depth and anything else was poorly done. Especially during action, the ghosting and aliasing on my passive tv and my active were terrible.

    • +1

Just watched it on 3D. I think you are talking crazy. It was great
Panasonic viera active. No ghosting or crosstalk visible

  • +2

Amazing movie. It deserved to gross more.

    • +2

It was one of the highest grossing films of 2014 with $370+ million and counting.

      http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=allyouneediskill.htm

      • +1

Wow it did gross more than I thought after box-office. Good to know intelligent scifis are getting rewarded

      • I think the international box office helped a lot. I believe it didn't do too well on US box office.

    • Tom picks his roles well.

  • +4

I was just watching this movie twice in the last two days. And now it's on OzBargain. What day is this?
    On your feet, maggot!

  • Bought with my christmas gift card, thanks!

  • The movie was great until it got to the third act and the ending.

  • awesome price. thanks. I enjoyed this in the cinema and in 3d too - Loved the 3d moments. Don't have a 3d tv but hey at 16 dollars. pretty good price.

  • Can you stack the 20% Christmas vouchers (bonus for $50 gift card purchase) with the Boxing Day 20% sale?

    • I read before that you can't as it violates their T&C's but you can always give them a call.

  • Thanks OP. Got one!

  • Another bargain there - Joe Dante's The Hole 3D at $7.98
