  • Yes good deal. Well below cost according to Myer…free delivery also. Got one this morning. Still waiting on my $30 cashback confirmation from Amex though.

  • Says its a 'smart tv'. Anyone know if you can run plex on this?

    • No plex, they're referring to their own smart apps (e.g. crackle, iview etc), but it does have its own dnla client. Note, i don't think this has an ethernet port just integrated wifi. (edit: apparently it does have an ethernet port, it's just not mentioned in their product description)

    • I'm no expert but I'll throw in my two cents, We have the 42 inch version that was brought a year ago and it runs plex. Not as the typical apps but as if you had plugged a hard drive in it. It was a nice surprise when I joined the plex wagon.

      • I'm not sure it's plex though, my sony bravia runs a dnla client which as you say when you plug in a external hard drive it fires up an app called "My Media Hub". Although My Media Hub has been able to play just about everything i've thrown at it, mkv, avi, mp4 etc so it could well be plex based but not necessarily plex.

        • Plex also runs as a DLNA client I think, my LG tv can find it, which is awesome. (note that someone made a third party LG Plex app and it's great).

      • That's not Plex itself - it is just accessing Plex's DLNA server, which shows the media files in a format similar to that when you plug a HDD in.

The difference here is that Plex transcodes on the fly, while DLNA relies on the media codecs built into the TV.

    • I've got Plex running on a server at home and a few Sony "Smart" TV's. Both are able to access Plex using DNLA and works great. Note its not a dedicated Plex app (such as the one on Samsung TV's)

      • So does that mean that if you had a Samsung TV with the dedicated Plex app installed you would see all of the meta data that was running on the main Plex server??? I have Plex running on my N54L and it would be great to be able to see all of the cover art for TV shows and movies etc.

What does the Sony TV show when you access using DLNA?

Good price, but be aware this is a direct lit monitor, so it's significantly thicker than alot of other led tv's on the market. This youtube channel has a great review on the tv:

    http://www.rtings.com/reviews/tv/lcd-led/sony/w600b

    • I've been told direct lit is better than edge lit for uniformity.

This also has Miracast apparently…so can display my Surface 2 screen wirelessly.

      • love miracast :)

  • Hi All, it has a LAN port just above the HDMI ports at the rear of the TV and also built in wifi that can find either 2.4 or 5Ghz signals

That's good to know, they should really advertise that on their product info page.

  • It's so bad that I saw 40inch and thought.. "pfffft so tiny…"

    • +1

      Probably okay for the bedroom.

      • +3

40 inches is huge for the bedroom… ;-)

          We still taking about TV's?

        • @andrewzx: he didn't say long did he?

  • +1

Argh. I have been keeping an eye out for a non branded (probably a next Dick Smith special) 40" for the bedroom (roughly ~$280'ish) and now this comes up.

    DILEMMA!

I have the 50" Kdl50w700b (which is $699 on DJ btw) and it is awesome. With getflix account ($25 for the year) Netflix runs no configuration required. Very handy :)

    Looks great for gaming too!

    Definitely recommend the 50" :D

    • good alternative and awesomely priced. Id be happy with the 40" as a second tv but I have checked this larger one out this morning and looks great. I'm so tempted.

    • Hi,

Can you explain in details about how to setup Netflixx on this TV for $25 dollars a year ?

      • With ~$25 Getflix account

        • Then Netflix is also USD$7.99 a month …

I thought it was AUD$25 a year for the whole thing :)

      • yeah if anyone is curious :

Very simple, sign up for a getflix account (http://www.getflix.com.au). Also sign up for a netflix account (free month also, though recurring credit charge, i chose HD quality $8.00 USD a month i think?).

Then go to your dns settings on your modem/router - getflix will give you the settings, just 2 things you need to put in really simple.

Once you've got the dns set up, netflix will work for any pc/connected device in your home network.

I was pleasantly suprised when i was able to just open the sony app on the tv and netflix worked straight away :)

  • Any recommended sites to obtain a Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) rebate?

  • wish i could layby …

  • Anyone have an idea on the refresh rate?

  • I see that Big Dick has the same price listed here:

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/sony-40-101cm-full-high-definiti…

Does anybody know if there are any Dick deals that could be used in conjunction with this to bring the price down a bit more???

    • I called up DJ online sales, and they told me that's because dse run their electrical department now.

  • Does anybody have any idea what an equivalent Samsung model would be with a similar spec (and quality)?

I am interested in the Plex app that Samsung has natively as I run Plex at home.

Or is it not really worth it given that this Sony appears to play most stuff that gets thrown at it? I think I am looking at the Plex angle to have the meta data as it may well keep the wife happy to see a similar look as she does on the main box.

    Views would be great. :o)

    • +1

The equivalent Samsung would be the UA40H5500, though I would pay the additional $150-odd for Samsung's UA40H6400. 100Hz & Micro Dimming, as well as Bluetooth for the smart remote make the extra cost worthwhile in my opinion.

  • Why is this a good deal when the Sony KDL48W600B is selling for $499 @ GG - http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/boxing-day-sale-doorbuster-off…. ?

    • +1

A bird in the hand is better than chasing around after a (probably) limited stock item that can only be purchased in store.

And it's the best price ever for this model AFAIK…so it is a good deal logically.

And 48" would be too big for my application anyway.

  • Went to the checkout on the site and got:

Error:Sorry, an error has occurred while trying to retrieve the inventory status of this product.

Anyone know how to get around this?

    • +1

You can't. I called online sales at 1730 yesterday as I had the same issue for an hour. Turns out that despite the site saying that there is stock when you go to checkout it queries the inventory and then throws the error because it is actually out of stock.

      Not happy with that.

The recommendation was to start calling stores on boxing day.

Not happy with that answer either.

      • oops wrong thread :) thought this was the good guys 48" sony !

  • Anyone received this delivery yet?

    • I ordered a different Sony TV from DJs on the 24th - haven't gotten the email from Dick Smith (as DSE do DJ's tech now, the email from DSE is meant to have tracking information) or any other correspondence from DJs.

Called them up and was told it will take 24 hours to get a query as to where in the pipeline it is…

      Also Melbourne

      • Thanks just called and got the same story. Now also awaiting a callback re status.
