He's not dicking around - these look like decent prices to me

  • +3

Wish they'll have Note Edge for sale….

  • +5

Sony XPERIA Z3 or Z3c please Dick. Not everyone is a fan of Samsungs

    • +1

They don't even sell those for some reason

      • I can't find any Aus retailer selling the Z3.
And the Z3 Compact only seems to be sold at JB HiFi.

Anyone know of anywhere else to look?

        • +2

Nah just ones like unique mobiles and DWI

        • +3

z3 compact is sold at Telstra, Sony Kiosk and JBHIFI. You can price match Telstra at JB for $600.

        • +3

Bought my Z3 at Jb-hifi. They had black and white when i bought it a couple months ago. Got them to price match Harvey's at the time who had it on their system for $750.

        • +3

All telcos have it, as do Jb.

        • @nubzy: Does the JB Z3c come with Telstra bloatware?

        • @nubzy: double post

    • That's because they are sick to death of Sony's warranty claims. Two Xperias have died on me to date, both took over 6 weeks to get replaced.

  • anyone know if there is any bloatware on these phones?

    thanks in advanced

    • +3

They're Samsungs.. They come with all of Samsung's bloatware, so you have the Stock Android app plus Samsung'a alternative to the Stock Android App. If you're really keen you can also add Gooogle's App to complete the set…

      • +3

        ok let me rehash

does it come with any australian carrier bloatware?

        • Depends on the carrier. I got S3 from Virgin mobile and there was no app from Virgin mobile. Nokia Lumia had few apps from from Vodafone but were easily un-installed. Optus is pain, their apps are annoying and difficult to uninstall on prepaid Huawei.

        • +3

Dick stock is unbranded and unlocked. So to answer your question - no carrier bloatware.

        • @akd:

I got S3 from Virgin mobile and there was no app from Virgin mobile

How'd you do that… when I got mine from Virgin, GS3 4G 2 years ago, it was jam packed with Optus apps… I knew they used Optus network but damn…

        • @ProjectZero: Sorry, I bought S2 not S3, typing mistake. I am sure there was no Virgin or Optus app on the handset. No idea why. Huawei Optus prepaid phone was full of Optus crap.

  • Tempting price for galaxy alpha
I will still go with note 4 though

  • About 5 months till the S6 is on Aussie store shelves btw.

  • The Galaxy Alpha seems to have disappeared. Just as I decided to go for it :/

    • +3

just click the link in post scroll down and click add to cart

      • Awesome. Thanks for the tip! Hope the order doesn't get cancelled..

  • S5 is $569 at Kogan here

    • +1

That is prob not Australian stock and you need to add about $35 delivery

      • You mean they ship from overseas or it's a grey import?

        • +3

          Grey

        • @TRENT86: I just buy Grey imports never had a problem with them. Save money wherever you can.

    • it's already been posted

      • Yeah… just noted they hadn't sold out… I suppose Ozbargainers like the cheaper M7…

  • +7

Just when I thought dicksmith possibly be any dodgier, they go and do something like this… and totally redeem themself!

  • Is $636 really the best price on Galaxy S5 Ausstock - thought Ive seen it cheaper?

    • what model is this s5 G900H, G900FD, G900 ?
      kogan Samsung mobile confuse me,
      whats the Australian model?
      https://www.kogan.com/au/search/?keywords=samsung+s5

      • +4

        Kogan are a crap retailer

        • whats the max sd card I can put in s5's is it 128GB?
will I still have access to the onboard 16gb?
thinking of moving to android from apple

don't like the iPhone 6, love the 5's size and shape

        • +1

          @SlipKnot: Yeah 128GB

        • @TRENT86:

thanks any suggestions/links of good micro sd cards for s5 or just to use with usb adaptor.
how are sandisk compared to samsungs
sorry I am not upto scratch with these cards

Edit: so what model is this s5
is this the cheapest local price you reckon?

      • The model I received from Kogan was G900F. Bought it for $500. Pretty happy with it.

    • +3

Just picked up the S5 (model SM-900i) from Officeworks via the 5% price beat, so around $606. Cannot complain about that bargain, although still more than I would prefer to pay for a phone.
No way I would go kogan for an import and less warranty help than local stock, unless it was $100 cheaper.

      Merry Xmas to me!

  • S3 titanium sold out

  • +1

The Galaxy S4 which DSE provides i i9505 [Snapdragon 600] whereas i9506 [Snapdragon 800] is available almost in similar price $390 after $5 discount [When you signup] in DWI - http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Samsung-Galaxy-S4…

Those who are interested can think about it before buying…

    • +1

Just price matched S4 at OW for $364.04

      • Good thinking I'll add that to post :)

      • Did u get i9505 or i9506???

        • I Don't think Brick Aussie retailers sell the 06 so he prob got the 505

        • @TRENT86: Hmm, in that case isn't it good to get from DWI which is higher speed compared to this one?

        • +1

          @shaktipatro:

i think there is a voda and telstra 06 version

officeworks website seems to suggest its a 9505

        • @shaktipatro: Yeah it's a little faster

        • +1

Not sure exactly, no mention of the model on the website.

It's for the mrs who uses it for basic stuff so not really fussed.

Key difference for me is the warranty - listed as 2 years on the OW website vs 1 year for DWI

        • @csingh: Hmm, that's a good deal. Has OW Galaxy Alpha???

    • +3

      i9506 vs Alpha.

I will take Alpha anyday now. Just look at the performance of Exynos 543x vs Snapdragon 800. Consider 15 months old i9506 will not get support going past 18 months Samsung's firmware support. Alpha at this price only $50 more expensive and it's Aussie not DWI grey. 0.29" smaller screen and no 1080p might be a big no no but I don't see the difference. Not that anyone is going to count the pixels it can cramp in the screen anyway. 32gb is sufficient unless you are going to install all 1gb/2gb sized games, but how many hours you actually spend playing those games and how many of them actually just get installed and forgotten?

      Just my 2 cents.

      • +1

Yes I would go Alpha too not just because of the specs but the Metal build is prob the big draw card for me

        • Is Alpha above S4 between S3 and S4? And have you checked with OW to price match???

      • U r right. Is Alpha above S4 between S3 and S4? And have you checked with OW to price match???

        • +2

Alpha is way above S3 and S4 having released only 3 months ago on 3rd of September 2014. Having screen size of S3 and specs of almost similar performance to Note 4's chipset (just without the 3GB RAM). I will check with OW. I'm keen to get Alpha for quite sometime already. Will come back to you.

EDIT : Sorry Can't find alpha on OW website. DS is probably the only place to grab this bargain on Alpha now. Thanks TRENT86 you beat me by seconds.

        • +1

          @NoobTan: OW Don't sell alpha

        • @NoobTan: Not necessarily. Alpha was produced as a middle to high range phone. It probably is better than s3 but it probably wouldn't fare well against s4 4G (the one with Snapdragon 800).

EDIT: Though, I am not disagreeing that that phone looks really good. It is on my list of phones I'd want to have.

        • @AznMitch: Well they (Sammy) may have said it's a middle to high end range. Any no brainer can look into benchmarks and see Alpha isn't middle to high end. It's high end. It it wasn't high end, Sammy wouldn't boast that much prior to it's release. It's the first phone flagship to carry Exynos Octa (with 4G bands) if I'm not mistaken. The other phones had Octa Core Exynos but without 4G (S5 Maybe?). I'm not super tech geek but from what I see, Alpha is the way to go given the small price difference. It's future proof in terms of firmware update too at least for another 12 months. Apart from a smaller battery. There is nothing else that puts me off. I bought the White Alpha thanks to TRENT86. The basemark multi core performance nearly 50% more powerful than S801 on S5 (S800 on i9506 not far behind from S801) can do. If you look at all the benchmark, Alpha tops S5 (let alone S4) in most of it.

BTW, my mom's I9506 Antutu scored 35k close to S5's 36k but Alpha scored 38k according to GSMarena.

        • +1

@NoobTan: Hmmm, the news article I've read about how it's CPU is set to low clock to compensate for the small battery must be wrong, oh well.

Though I do not disagree, it looks amazing, I'd personally say that if I had choices between S4 4G and Alpha, I would probably go for Alpha and wait for the high capacity battery pack to be released to Australia. I personally don't care about the resolution and the pentile stuff anyways.

        • @NoobTan:

Those synthetic benchmarks don't mean much if the software can't take advantage of the hardware.
Real life performance would be relatively similar between the i9506 and Alpha if they were to run the same software.

Although the Alpha does have some nice things going for it like the construction and chipset, if the screen is anything like the S3 I had previously, the display and battery life appear mediocre when compared to that on the S4. The claim that not being able to see above 324ppi is false although, it may not be as noticeable on an LCD display than it is on an AMOLED display that uses a pentile layout. You might not be able to see the pixels themselves but you will be able to tell a difference, especially with text.

One thing worth noting about the i9505 with the S600 is that it has a good development community (only matters if you're into that stuff like me). The Google Play Edition (i9505G) is based off the i9505 meaning that you'll be able to flash pure stock Android as long as Google and development community continues to support it whereas the i9506 and the Alpha have little support at all.

I have an i9505 (might be considered biased) running Lollipop which I assure you feels faster and smoother than the i9506 on Touchwiz despite the difference in synthetic benchmarks (~27k vs ~33k) which is even larger than the difference between the i9506 and the Alpha.

The point is that the difference in synthetic benchmarks between the S800 and Exynos don't mean much as software plays a bigger role.
If I was given the option to choose between the i9505/i9506/Alpha, I'd go for the i9505 again.

          Just my opinion.

        • @AznMitch: Agree with your point. The resolution is more of a fancy feature to me to be honest unless you hook it to your TV all the time. I can't be bothered everytime people compare pixels and resolution on a phone unless they have eye of a spider or else it doesn't make a difference. I have become a fan of Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (minimalist UI) after owning S3 because I simply cannot live with touchwiz and sammy's bloatware. At this price, I went for Alpha instead of Z3 Compact ($505 cheapest at the moment). Regretting a bit but the price on Alpha is too good to let go. I'm still in love with Z3 Compact. Sorry Sony, I love you but…

          Also..

Not sure if I'm alone in this situation but Android phones tend to get slower overtime (even after a month), but iPhone doesn't do that. My 2 year old S3 really lags compare to new S3. My company's IT guys are total Android supporter but they did mention to me they have same idea of how iPhones stay snappy after 1 year's usage and Android just deteriorates over time with basic usage (for our managers to make phone calls and texts). I only got my 5S last month (first Apple product and my b'day gift because I'd never buy Apple). Be aware of this if anyone is trying to make the switch from iPhones to Android. I am still android fan but I cannot deny the fact that iOS is smoother really after 1 month+ compare to Android after 1 month+ with minimal apps installed (banking and whatsapp only, no facebook, games or fancy apps).

        • @NoobTan: Actually, the resolution might be one reason why it can last longish sub-2000mah, resolution does have huge impact on battery life. Though I have to admit, I prefer higher resolution stuff, if it doesn't kill the battery that much.

        • @AznMitch: i totally omitted that point. Thanks for pointing it out.

        • @NoobTan: Does factory reset do the trick to make 1 year old android quicker?

        • +1

@Gaggy: Yes it does but you have to do backups and re-transfer all your backups and settings. Won't be too long till it starts lagging again. I don't have a problem with the laggish UI, but it still bugs me sometimes especially iPhone doesn't do that. I'm not siding iPhone but it's just how I feel between the two. I still like andoid, which explains why I still buy Android after owning a 5S. Just wanting to point out from my experience of using the 2 OS.

Your widgets on homescreen would slow down the phone too. Try use as little widgets as possible on Android.

          Hope this helps.

        • +1

          @Gaggy:

'App cache cleaner' is your friend

      • If matter of $50 more, then if you add another $60, then you will get, HTC M8 [in $499] which is of course can't be beaten by Alpha… :)

  • Missed out on the G3 but the Alpha was too good to resist.. Specs are not so great but just wanted a change from my Nexus5. Thanks Trent

  • Note the One M7 and One M8 prices have gone down quite a lot as well

    • Yeah already posted

  • So, it's like HTC M8 >= LG G3 >= Galaxy S5 > Galaxy S4 > Galaxy Alpha > HTC M7 > Galaxy S3 as per current trend, price and features.

So far, better buy is HTC M8 from DSE with $499 or LG G3 from DWI unless there is better offer on these two products.

If going down to slightly less features, HTC M7 is the BEST which was @ $259 that I missed yesterday.

    • Most did, lots cancellations now

  • +1

    How's the Alpha

    • As good as Eneloops.

  • Looks out of stock - page cannot be found for both the black or white now?

    • Click the link in post scroll down click add to cart :)

      • Ya did that, but it keeps saying that my cart is empty.

It even adds it, but says the item is $0 and that my cart is still empty???

Went and looked in cart - and it is sitting there waiting for payment? Very odd.

So looks like I can place my order, but their system is making it look like I can't (initially).

        All good, order placed :-)

  • +1

I ordered the alpha as soon as I saw this post 2 hours ago. Thanks for the tip, Trent86, regarding the add to cart button on the original post. Otherwise, at that point, I could no longer order either.

Anyway, I've been researching compact/small phones the entire last week and have pretty much zeroed in on either the Alpha or the Z3Compact.

Best I could get from a brick and mortar store as of yesterday was $577. That was at JB-hifi who also have a 2-year in-store warranty for it.

I just want to add that with the alpha, only downsides I can think of is the 720p display, lack of memory expansion, and the smallish battery.
IMHO and for myself, I think the display is perfectly clear. My current HTC One S isn't even HD and I find it spectacular.
I'm sure for a lot of people the lack of expandable memory might be a deal breaker, But I've never gone above 10Gb usage in ANY of handheld devices, including my tablet.
The battery endurance, well, it really is a bit small compared to the other flagships, but I suppose it's perfectly usable as a daily driver.

    • still able to be click and collected it shows some stores with stock.

  • +2

Just returned the S5 I bought yesterday to JB Hi-Fi who refunded it no questions. Thankfully did not unbox it yet. Managed to click & collect. Thanks TRENT86, you just saved me $130.

  • Great prices. Thanks Trent86. Already alreaded H7 and in a limbo now as not sure if it will be delivered or not. But happy to wait and if cancelled, then will wait for another good deals :)

  • Will deals like this be around after the holidays are over with? First time purchasing a nice phone and have no idea how these sales usually work

    • Sales will come and go, and never be around when you are actually ready to buy.

    • You might want to consider waiting till Galaxy S6 comes out, the prices on these might go down even further.

      • Back up to $798 2mrw, this is the best single price discount I have seen from DSE Esp considering it's using no codes

        • +1

I am simply suggesting that it is an option. Price on electronics generally go down and Galaxy S5s didn't sell well, so Galaxy S5 might go down by heaps when S6 comes out. Of course this is talking about chances… Also he/she might like S6 more than S5 or Alpha, in that case it might be better to save up.

Though I didn't mean to sound as if this is not a decent deal. This deal is decent and the chances are, price like this would be hard to see. As I was saying, I just thought that reminder to options like that might be good for the person.

          Also, welcome back.

        • @AznMitch: lol yeah I know dude :)

        • @TRENT86: How big a DDoS was tht ? some downtime…

        • Hey, Trent, R u sure price will be back to old price tomorrow, No specific date is mentioned on the site :)

        • +2

@Oz3v: If there was a deal it will most likely be around this price, I can't see another special going much below this in the next month

        • @TRENT86: Just FYI, It didn't end. "HOT PRICE Online Exclusive Offer Offer ends 22-Dec-14". :)
