If you are fan of the series, even the $60 is worth it, there are a lot of fan services. Otherwise if you are not familiar with anime and visual novels, you will find it really weird. If you are on the fence, just watch some video of it.

edit: also that art of Asuna is really odd. any of the art drawn by the anime studios are usually bad (that's why I read the LN and skip the game), but I flipped through a couple and they are all particularly bad.

  • I've been playing SAO for about 2 weeks now so I'll drop some of my thoughts for those that are considering it:

-The translation is pretty rough but it doesn't really affect anything
-Combat mechanics take a little while to learn and the number of skills may overwhelm you initially
-Fan service stuff is there but you don't really have to do any of it (so far).
-Kirito can equip many different weapon types and armour so you don't necessarily have to dual wield
-Game is split between the Aincrad floors (seen in the show) and a new "hollow area"

-In Aincrad, you can take some basic quests and complete objectives to help fight the floor boss. Defeating a sub-boss will give you valuable intel on the upcoming boss fight. You need to ensure that the raid party (Kirito's harem + some randoms) is strong enough to fight the boss. This means leveling them up, helping them in the wild or doing special quest events.

-In the Hollow Area, you complete hollow missions. You can also play actual or simulated multiplayer here (which is the fastest way to help your crew level). The game also has an 'implement system' which asks you to complete a specific number of actions during a hollow mission. This will unlock extra skills or gear.
