Melbourne Water providers - compare rates

Hi,

How is it possible to compare water rates of different providers in Melbourne ? I could not find any website that does such a comparison for water prices.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

  • I don't think you can choose your water provider.

    • Presumably after bottled home delivery?

      • No, I am afraid - I am talking about the running water.

  • Please let me know what that means. I am new to VIC - not sure how things work.
I have just got a place where I need to move in one week.

    • If you're just after water that comes out of the taps, you have no choice, there is only 1 supplier of tap water.

      • Oh, OK. Then, I will have to contact them. I believe it is Yarra Valley Water (?)

  • +1

in victoria its not the actual water usage that inflates your bill, its the service charges.

  • The three Melbourne retail companies (City West Water, Yarra Valley Water and South East Water) operate the water distribution and sewerage systems for the Melbourne metropolitan area. Each retail company provides water supply and sewerage services within a specified geographic region of the metropolitan zone.

There is no competition between the three Water companies. All are state owned.

    • That's useful to know. Much appreciated.

    • Forgive my ignorance but if there is no competition between them, why have three separate entities? I guess I just don't immediately see the efficiencies from splitting them into three.

      • Public service and efficiency in the same sentence? Surely sir, you jest.

3 companies = 3 management teams, 3 accounts departments, 3 IT departments, 3 HR groups, etc. Think of the children!

        • Yes - my point exactly. I cannot see any efficiencies but I can see numerous inefficiencies from such an arrangement. Which is why, if they are all government owned and don't compete, I don't understand it.

      • They were all set up to be "Jeffed" in the 1990's - sold off to private enterprise.

It just followed the path of the Trams, Rail, Gas, Electricity.

  • Thanks everyone for your comments.
