I know it can be googled and I did it, but couldn't find convincing answer, could any one please let me know the difference between these so that I would be able to select which one to buy?

  1. tablet vs iPad - What can be done in iPads which can't be done in tablets
  2. tablet/ipad vs laptop - What can be done in laptops which can't be done in tablets or ipads?

tablet vs iPad - What can be done in iPads which can't be done in tablets

"iPad" refers specifically to Apple's line of tablets

Tablet refers to a computing device that lacks a keyboard and relies on a large screen for interaction and touch input.

A laptop refers to a traditional device that has a moving hinge and a permanently attached keyboard and trackpad.
What a laptop is capable of depends on what hardware it uses and what OS it runs.

For example, a Chromebook running ChromeOS on an Exynos ARM processor is still considered a laptop even though it is incapable of running Windows or OSX. HP slatebook 14 is a laptop that runs Android

The lines are blurring between laptops and tablets because we now have a 'hybrid' category, for example ASUS Transformers and Surface Pros / RT's.

TLDR; laptops / tablets refer to a specific form factor or shape of the device but it does not refer to what it can do in terms of CPU instruction set and software

Be easier if you tell us what do you want to accomplish with the said device.

Pretty much a Laptop can do anything a tablet can do and much much more..
Tablets are only good for lounging on the couch doing very casual browsing.

  • Thanks guys for your answer. Still not able to understand.

Actually, to be specific, I have a laptop and I would like to replace that with a tablet.

So, what I would like to know here is that can we do almost all things in tablet that we can do in laptop?

If not, what are the exclusions which can't be done in tablets?

If I have to select between tablet and ipad, then which one should I choose and why?

I can see ipad is very expensive compared to tablet, is it due to Apple brand or it gives more features compared to tablets?

    Cheers,

      An iPad is a tablet…

    • I think you should look to buy a Windows 8.1 tablet..
That's the best way to cover your bases.
If you need laptop functionality, then all you need to do is add a bluetooth keyboard.

Like I said before, Apple iPads are Tablets. There are a few different kinds of tablets running different operating systems.

iPads are expensive because it's Apple. You are limited to what you can do with an iPad, and you may install apps only from the iTunes store.
It cannot for example, open .EXE programs that you downloaded from the internet.

TDLR an iPad is like a bigger version of an iPhone

Then we have Android — like an iPad, you may only use apps and games from the Google Play market. You cannot open .EXE windows programs that you downloaded from the internet.

TLDR an Android tablet is like a bigger version of an Android smartphone

Then we have Windows tablets. Windows tablets may range from the super cheap (Pendo Pad 7, Acer Iconia 8W), to mainstream (ASUS T100) to the premium and expensive (Lenovo Yoga 2, Surface 3 Pro).
So their prices can range from a mere $99 dollars to $2000.

These devices run ordinary laptop computer processors (Intel) and can do EVERYTHING a ordinary notebook can, including running Windows Apps and running the mobile apps that you see in the Windows App store.

TLDR A windows based tablet is the best replacement for a laptop.

    • Get a Surface (or other brand equivalent) - can use as portable touch tablet, or with a keyboard you have a full functioning laptop.

    • Anything you do on computer that involves program, you probably can do them but it would be substitutes if you go for Android or iOS (iPads). In other words, there might be substitutes for the programs, but no guarantees on whether they will work the same. This is because they are on different OS.

Personally I think unless you are looking at Windows tablet (which in my opinion, just laptops in tablet factor since tablet apps on those are limited and it runs Windows program), you'd have to make some compromises. Of course, I am referring to Windows 8 tablet, not Windows RT tablets.

iPads are more expensive because of Apple premium but I personally think iPads probably are most decent choice out of Android and iOS if you are going for those. Apple does have a huge market, thus specific apps developed for them specifically for iPads. Also they were able to put tablet specific CPU for their newest iPad, which no Android tablets could do because of sales volume being too small. This being said, Android tablets do offer more room for customisation so I think it all boils down to preferences.

In my personal opinion, if you want to replace your laptop, go with Windows 8 tablets because they are laptops in tablet forms basically.

Surface Pro series are as expensive as laptops and they are heavier than most tablets, but that is because it has exactly the same components, with a pen, as laptops. They are lighter than most ultrabooks so I personally see them worth the price. If you do anything that requires a lot of resources, probably go with Surface Pro series.

If you are just thinking about replacing your laptop because you don't do anything heavy on it, go with tablets that used Intel Atom CPU. Atom CPU packs little processing power compared to the ones used in Surface Pro series, but they use less electricity. They are lighter, usually fanless so no noises from fan, and they are cheaper.
The ones that uses Atom CPU includes, ASUS t100, ThinkPad 8 and 10, Dell Venue 8 Pro, list goes on.

Though in my personal opinion, laptop still is better in terms of productivity. Even if it has a touchscreen, if you do spreadsheet editing, you will probably use a mouse. If you are typing something, because of the weight distribution, laptops generally feel much better. IMO, if you want to use tablets like a laptop, you will probably set it up like a laptop. Though the ability of being able to change it to tablet form may persuade you.

Wow, we've already reached the point where people don't know the difference between a tablet and a laptop?

    • ARM processors have come a long way and so did Atom CPUs. I think the ARM processors are around 5~8 years-ish behind the laptop CPUs (I've read an article on benchmark and how ARM processors are getting closer to old laptop CPUs), Atom CPUs are becoming really decent too.

  • Ipad = Tablet = cut down computer functionality. Can do basic tasks - internet, youtube, email, basic excel/word, games.

Laptop = more usable but less portable. Can do all of the above and much more.
Apple Laptop = same as above laptop.

Anything from Apple costs more than a base model "opposition make" equivalent device. But when compared with a similar spec opposition they are not that much more expensive.

  • i think for people who dont know the difference then a tablet/ipad is prob best option.
nowadays a tablet can do almost everything a computer can thats not work/productivity.

i woudln't reccomend surface/pro for a non tech savvy user. it lacks good apps and is not as easy to use and its expensive.
