$1.30/L Unleaded Petrol at Woolworths Caltex - Majura & Costco Majura (ACT)

450

Costco Petrol just opened today in Canberra, should bring some relief to petrol prices in Canberra since we pay around 20 cents a litre more than Sydney and Melbourne. In fact the prices are on par with some WA regional areas.

The Woolies price does require an EDR card with a 4c voucher, otherwise it is $1.33lt for unleaded.

EDIT: They just lowered to 130.7 a litre now for regular unleaded.

  • Saw a picture from somewhere in America which had the equivalent of $0.55/L AUD.

If only it was that cheap.

    • Last time I was there, you could easily get it for under $3 a gallon! But I think it varies a bit from place to place!

    • Its around 75 to 95c/l (AU, =$3/gal) in the US now, inc all taxes which vary by location, but average 16c/l.

We have a 38c/l excise, as well as GST, which makes most of the difference.

    • Was there a month ago and paid $3.19 a gallon in SF. That's about 85c equivalent.

  • Feel sorry for you capital dwellers.

Adelaide is currently 123.9 almost everywhere. Used a 4 cent Coles voucher yesterday and got it for 119.9.

    • But Canberra is smaller, so they spend less anyway.
And politicians have kept fuel prices for airlines much lower than we pay for our cars.

      • +1

        "Manic" is apt.

  • +2

Given the current crude oil prices, it should be more like 89c/l

    • +1

Obviously our Fed and State excises don't help it… But the wholesalers would be rubbing thier hands together right now!

      • Gate price is only averaging around 1.08 currently, so not making a great deal. By the time you add the fuel excise (47c/L) and GST (10%) then transportation cost (varies from 1c/L to 7-10c/L) then general EPA costs of the site, it all adds up quickly enough.

      • TGP includes excise and has been around the 118-120c mark ex Sydney Melb Adel Bris Perth this week.
        http://www.aip.com.au/pricing/tgp/#ulp

  • yeah it was about $1.47 a couple of weeks ago when I drove through, looked at the gauge and decided to get fuel at Goulburn, $1.25

  • REMEMBER - If you have applied for their QFF point promotion your EVERYDAY Rewards account will show you still have 4c/l fuel discounts to use. But you will never receive the 4c discount (even though it clearly say 4c/litre discount expires on 'x' date in your account.

Woolworths are uninterested in changing / removing the 4c/l info

    • Funny you should say this. Since moving earlier this year I very rarely use WW, but still have an EDR card linked to QFF. The last couple of times I've had to grab WW petrol I've used my EDR card and received the 4cpl discount!
Beats, trying to remember to grab my Coles vouchers!

petrolspy.com.au is good for sharing fuel prices

Just filled up at Woolies Majura. They've lowered the price again.

130.7 for non fuel discount, 126.7 with discount

  • Melb's cycle is up to a whopping 60 days and counting since the last trough and with the tgp still dropping consistently, prices might not go up for at least another few weeks, crazy.

I guess since Canberra doesn't have cycles, there's not as much pressure to pass on any savings, yesterday's average was only 3.5 c/l less than November's average.

  • Do they have eflex?

    • To my knowledge no. Only United and Caltex offer Eflex currently (for now)

Went there this evening and it was pretty straightforward. Although it is self service, they have tons of staff on hand to help newbies.

    My observations:

    • I had to wait behind one car at the pump before filling up.
    • AThey ask you to insert a Costco card with magnetic stripe into the machine.
    • If like me you don't have one, they'll swipe their own for you, and tell you to get a replacement at the counter in the main shop.
    • You then insert your credit/debit card and preauthorise the amount of fuel you want.
    • I overestimated my amount (because I wanted a full tank) and my Westpac account now has three charges on my electronic summary:

    1) Preauthorisation -$80
    2) Fuel cost -$64
    3) Preauthorisation refund +$80

    • Apparently #3 can sometimes take a day, but assistant said it was usually instant if <$20.

Overall, pretty painless, and getting 98 RON for 139.7 p/l sure as hell beats normal Canberra pricing. Let's home the 10c premium for 98 is the new normal!

  • The price for regular unleaded had dropped to $1.267 by the time I went past at around 6:30pm.

For comparison, E10 at the BP on the way home was ~$1.48.

  • Sounds interesting. anyone know the quality compared to Caltex or Shell?

    • According to a post earlier in this thread, the fuel is from the Caltex supply chain.

In terms of my own experience, a housemate drove to Melbourne yesterday with a tank of their 98RON and I haven't heard of any issues. I've also driven ~20km with a tank of their 98 since last night and it doesn't feel any different to usual.

      • +1

You shouldn't have any issues, as its just regular ULP98 with brand new double skin tanks.

120cpl for ULP 95 this morning. Cars queued about 6 deep at all bowsers for the 2 hours we were in the precinct. Good job Costco for putting the wind up CalWorths and ShellCo and bringing some long overdue competition to the fuel market in Canberra! Got nearly $200 from us in store as a result although I did notice a LOT of overpriced stuff in the warehouse, which I avoided.

My local 7-11 is still at 147.

  • The pricing at Casula in Sydney suggests there will be a honeymoon period and if you shop around, there will be cheaper in the same city.
Maybe not the case in the city designed specially to limit the rest of the countries explosure to politicians, yet something to consider when paying for the "membership" that despite their claims, is not refundable and nor do they afford you anything meaningful when it comes to customer service.

  • So apparently Woolies has been jacking up their prices when Costco Petrol is shut, as soon as it opens back up they lower the prices.

    • Can anyone actually verify this? If so I'm sure the ACCC would be interested even if Woolworths isn't transgressing any law. Cynical action.

Costco 91 was 121.7 today, up 1.7 from Sat. Nearby suburbs still around the 147cpl mark.

        http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/woolworths-raises-p…

Woolworths has been slammed as giving motorists a "two-fingered salute" by raising its petrol prices minutes after its new discount competitor, Costco, shuts its bowsers at night.

As soon as the new Costco petrol station turned its pumps off at 9.30pm on Thursday, Woolworths' petrol prices rose 14c to 143.9 cents per litre — an extra hit of $7 for a 50-litre tank.

        • Thanks. I'll send the link to the ACCC. I'm sure we'll see immediate action with their new "powers" as of today - lol. If anyone needed a further example of the cynicism and nastiness of Woolworths (remember the veiled demands made of suppliers for their failed Jamie Oliver advertising campaign) this sort of action could hardly be a more stark reminder.

If you also want to register your own disgust and send the ACCC a message here's the link.
          https://www.accc.gov.au/contact-us/contact-the-accc/consumer…

This was my brief message to them:
No doubt with the ACCC's newfound powers regarding fuel you'll be straight on to the two supermarket "cartels" and their influence in keeping ACT fuel prices ridiculously high in the national capital (and elsewhere). If you need help perhaps you could start here: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/woolworths-raises-p… Hard to think of a more cynical act in this particular sphere.

        • @Possumbly: toothless tigers ACCC are, watch them do nothing.

        • @spy: in some cases, yes. They can't prosecute for price gouging (so much for the fed govt pricing parity policy, and the notion that competition will keep a lid on prices) but they can - and said they would - expose the gougers. First cab off the rank should be Woolworths with the Majura action showing utter contempt for consumers.

  • 118.7 for 91, 136.8 / 98 today at Costco

    • +1

      Still dropping. 113.6 91, 133.3 98 today.

  • I'm also a FIFO to Canberra.
Finally some realistic fuel prices in Canberra. Costco fuel have blown the Canberra price collusion out of the water.
Notice the Caltex\Woolies station at Majura Park also matches Costco price only while costco is open. Costco fuel apparently closes when the main store does aswell and the Caltex store bumps up its prices to gouging levels again.
I cannot see why Costco fuel cannot be a 24hr operation as it's a fully automated system. Swipe membeship\swipe card- fill- off ya go. No frills.

When i left Canberra - I filled up at Costco for $1.23\pl while the other stations on my way out where at $1.36. ouch.

The queues at both the Costco and caltex\woolies were hundreds meters long and had to get in early.

  • Yay for Costco!!! (and you'll never catch me saying that again :))

Here in ACT, Coles and Woolies have a duopoly. They DO collude on pricing, yet somehow they keep getting away with it.

Only problem is when that Costco fuel station closes at 9pm, the Woolies fuel across the road puts the prices up again 20c!!!

I saw it happen the other night right in front of my eyes!!!!! They openly exploit the system, and have killed off every smaller player in the market. I joined up to Costco as soon as I saw what was going on.

    20c a litre, 50L a tank (rough)= $10 saving per fuel stop.

I fill up 6 times and I have my membership back. The rest of the fuel I buy for the year is savings in my pocket.
