I thought about posting this, then thought nah, $6 for a splitter is okay but not that great.
Especially with recent complaints about all these one day deals ;-)

  • +2

    Is it really that special?

For instance http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16814, or get a Digitor brand splitter at your local dick smith for $4.87 (Product Code: P6525).

    • Your deal is really good. Sometimes these one day offers do encourage unnecessary spending.

Haha not 'gold-plated' but 'brass-plated', I wonder if it applies to this one.

I think that dealextreme site is a great place… I was just looking now and see they have some other alternatives too:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.741 ($1.08usd and it arrives in your letterbox!)
        http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.477

You can get them for around $0.01-$0.02 on eBay including postage, if you are patient.

        • I have the $1.08 one.
          It works brilliantly.

          • @corkster: For anyone else considering the $1.08 one, or anything on dealextreme really, do read the reviews or comments first!

Cons: -At first it maybe quite hard to get cord in it, but it will losen up after use (what about after lots of use?)

Cons: although it looks fine, i dont think the build quality is very high. feels a bit weird. if you would want to you could break it open with you bare hands, then gain why would you wanna do that :P

Cons: A bit fragile in the build, but is very usable.

Cons: - My splitter, while it worked fine, required that I push the plugs in with some force for one of the jacks. Your results may vary.

Cons: - I ordered 3 and that was a good thing because 1 of them worked perfectly, one of three wasn't perfect (I only got the plugs in with force) and one was useless (I only got one of all plugs I have in, and only with a lot of force) so that is a small problem.

Cons: It's a big of a struggle to fit the headphones into the socket, especially when you try and fit both headphones into it.Cheap build quality

Cons: - Build quality is bad. I can hardly get my 3.5mm plugs into this adapter. Inserted the plugs are leaning.

Cons: - It's a big of a struggle to fit the headphones into the socket, especially when you try and fit both headphones into it
            - Cheap build quality

            • @eug: For all these cons you've picked out there is some 32 reviews mentioning pros, and when the price is so low the risk is really negligible or non-existent.

              • @inherentchoice: yes, but it's those same people who mention the cons. Cheap adaptors certainly work fine for some uses, but if you're a heavier user, or expect it to last a while, that's not what you'd get from the dx ones.

That's why i say, dealextreme is great if you have the right expectations. People here are comparing the bottom end of the spectrum with what is presumably of 'normal' quality, saying that it's not worth getting the $5.95 one because there's this $1.50 one. That's like saying Mazdas are a poor deal because you can get a Kia for less. They're just in different ranges.

wow dealextreme is amazing. i just clicked your link to have a quick look and i ended up buying 6 random things lol

      • +2

DealExtreme is awesome, as long as you read the reviews and know what to expect from the product. It often beats ebay price-wise for random gadgets that you don't need. :)

        • Or don't need to last

I guess its not bad for a brand name..

  • You can buy a similar one of ebay for about 90cents. And that includes shipping.
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/3-5mm-3-5-mm-Stereo-Headphone-Y-Split…

  • seems to be rather high quality as its gold plated and thicker cables….for a brand name i reckon its decent price otherwise for something with same functions can be bought for substantially less as posted by others

I've had cheap splitters that were simply crap - the sockets weren't made to spec, so the plugs get loose after a short while. Or they're never tight to start with, resulting in poor connectivity.

Cheap splitter cables can also have poor shielding. Not too big a deal if used with earphones, but can make a world of difference (hummmm buzzzzzz) if used to plug in 2 audio devices into a set of speakers or recorder.

I stay away from the block types like the DSE and the dealextreme sku 741 ones. I've had blocks that split, or have poor quality contacts inside which bend and lose contact, resulting in crackling. Having a large block attached to your audio device isn't great either - plugging it into e.g. a hifi or radio and having two other audio cables hanging off it can be quite a strain on the socket, as it then acts as a lever. At least with the cable types, you can loop or pinch it around something (like the radio itself) to take the strain away from the device's small 3.5mm socket.

I would expect a branded product to have higher standards than $1 stuff. I'll know for sure when I receive mine. :)

I had a similar problem with the DSE block adapters. From the look of the picture, $5.95 is definitely cheap.

  • Looks like a quality product. Order placed.

To those using DealExtreme. It's definitely a good site for a bargain, as every item, no matter how cheap, has free postage. However, they are incredibly slow with postage. You can expect to wait over a month for your items to arrive.

  • Philips is a good brand. i have no evidence whatsoever to say this. :D

    • +1

tis better than a no-name ebay brand :P

      • true

    • +1

It's true. I read it on the internet.

      • What's the internet?

  • It's a cable splitter! Who cares if it is plutonium enriched or comes from the moon. Words such as gold plating/lifetime warranty are simply market gimmicks. These things by nature are signal degrading and if it works it work until you lose it. It has been mentioned many times that you can get the same product for much less on Ebay or DX

    • Good to see we have those pesky martians doing something useful, by making audio cable splitters for us.

Been waiting a while for my delivery from them though. How long does express shipping from the moon normally take? So glad I took out insurance!

    • +1

obviously aggregate has not used many cheap adaptors before. :)

    • I'll bet the 'lifetime warranty' would be overshadowed by a $10 postage and handling fee if you ever wanted to make a claim, plus you'd have to send it back to Phillips and wait for them to take their time to send you a replacement, at least that's how it was with a cheap umbrella I boughgt. It's pretty comical though when the warranty claim costs more than a new one, plus a warranty is really just an insurance policy. In many ways insurance for something $10 is an extravagant oxymoron.

  • Wondering if this is a stereo or mono splitter.

    • +1

There are 2 black stripes around the male connector, therefore it is stereo. A mono only has one stripe.

  • Mine arrived today. It's FAR higher quality than the cheap dealextreme ones I've bought. The cable shielding has 100% coverage thanks to its screen+foil construction, the plug body has a metal exterior, and the cable has a reasonable thickness.

I an quite certain that this will last longer than the cheapies.
