8.5kg LPG BBQ Gas Swap $25 (or around $20 with Fuel) Coles Express

270

Kleenheat gas cylinder swap 8.5kg now only $25 at Coles Express. Only slightly more than Bunnings etc, but if you have the Coles receipt coupon (4c off fuel), you get an extra 10c/l off with purchase over $20. So a 60l tank means less than $20 for the gas.

Very convenient for the summer barbecues.

8.5kg is about 17l, so still somewhat more expensive than filling from the bowser, but less risk of blowing yourself up.

  • New to BBQ.
Any idea how much the tank is for the gas swap?
Bought the large tank in BBQ Galore for $43 with the pressure gauge ($38 without gauge). $20 for filling the tank.
Not sure if I've paid too much.

Cylinder is $29 at Masters. Pressure gauge is next to useless for LPG. It does not tell you how full it is. You want scales for that.

      • The one sold by BBQ Galore has a float in the tank so it's as close to 100% accurate as possible.

        • Ah, good. But that is not a pressure gauge.

I have refilled over ten of the Campmaster 9kg bottles purchased from Masters and all PLO valves are reminicient of the bottles manufactured in the late 80's and early 90's.
The valve bleeds excessively when filling, hence wasting gas. Even filling the new bottles, the result is the same.
The hole adjacent to the bleeder valve screw (on the upper housing) is way off alignment, hence when using a screw driver to open and close the screw, the screw driver cannot fully fit correctly into the screw head due to angle of the screw driver.
I am sure over the ten year life of the bottle the screw head will become easily damaged and shorten the life of the PLO valve.
The hand wheel to open and close the PLO valve has a very short number of turns and has a very hard stop.
Its quite out of character to most common PLO valves, when these are turned off firmly, it has a spongy but firm stop. In otherwords you are confident the PLO valve is closed, not in the cases of the Campmaster valve.
The Campmaster 9kg bottle is cheap and comprises on good value and safety.
Many customers buy the a bottle based purely on price, without knowledge of the bottle characteristics.

  • Need help to understand the deal.
The Gas Swap is $25 - Does it means if you need an existing tank and swap for one that fill with gas? Or buying a tank filled with gas. Many thanks.

    • $25 is for tank swap only. If you have no existing tank, the price will be $25 plus price of the tank.

  • I have an Empty 9Kg bottle from Rays Outdoors (can I swap that) or do you need their proprietary bottle?

    • Yes, they accept any brand that complies with standards (e.g. has collar and POL valve).
Even a Campmaster :-) No need to remove the sticker.

^ I just pull the sticker off the bottle and had no problems exchanging bunnings bottles at masters and vice versa. At the end of day the people working on hourly rate couldn't care as long as the bottle count is correct.

  • We take all 8.5kg gas bottles, so no need to peel of stickers. You can buy a full bottle if you don't have one to swap. Can't remember the price but it is a big discount from what it normally is also. 3.7kg gas bottle swap is also $20.

You don't have to have a 4c docket to get the 10c off. You just have to spend $20 in store (exclusions apply)

I do not suggest filling up a gas bottle from a bowser as:
    1. it's illegal
    2. it's a different kind of gas. Auto LPG burns hotter.

      1. it's illegal

For good reason! I was joking.

      1. it's a different kind of gas. Auto LPG burns hotter.

Not necessarily true. The bottles are normally propane here, and Auto gas can be the same, or have butane blended, depending where you live.

But the reason they call it all "LPG" is because it is interchangeable for most purposes.
Your BBQ or car does not care if it is 60% or 100% propane.

      • But I've got a Beef Eater Super Deluxe BBQ! The man at the store said I had to run it on premium LPG. PREEEEMMMIIIUUUMMMM! DUDE! PREMIUMMMMM!

    • So the gas swap is $20 and we get 10c off fuel??
