Origin Energy- 18% off Electricity (New & Existing Customers)

144

It looks as if Origin Energy has been screwing us again. I for years have been content with 14% of my electricity, and 7% or something off my gas bill

As it turns out, all you need to do is ask for 18% ( I heard it somewhere) and they give it to you.

You must pay your bills ontime - 17%
Direct Debit Discount- 1%
TOTAL DISCOUNT - 18%.

The gas is 13% off, and then an extra 1% for Direct Debit. (14% total).

Just call 132 463.

Some people might be better off with the $100 credit on your gas bill at : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/169490

They will have to seek permission from their 'team leader' to approve these discounts.

Hi, I work at Origin and this is true. You need to ask for the discounts. If a higher discount is introduced, they won't change it for you to reflect those new discounts, you need to be the initiator

    • Can we ask for 25% like some of the older deals in 2013, 2012?

      • nope, you can't. Only existing deals..

        • -1

Of course we can ask. There is no harm in asking. Whether we will get the discount is another matter.

  • +13

I don't focus on the discount, I focus on the tarrif rate.

Just like insurance companies wanting to give me a rating one. I don't care if they give me rating five, I am only interested in the price

    • Origin tarriff rates are one of the best currently

  • +4

    Again using % discount. Typical.
Maybe soon we shall see 50% discount.
So far no energy retailer dare use 'lowest rate' strategy.

  • +3

er they had 28% off just recently?

Either way it's a rip go with powershop :)

    • Whats Powershop?

    • Be wary of Origin Energy. When the government cut the carbon tax, Origin did not reduce their rates and kept the profits. Other energy providers like red energy passed on the savings to consumers.

      • Can you apply this principle to Red Energy as well? Has anyone tried - I have changed from Origin to Red Energy around 6 months ago.

  • so what if you don't have gas? can you still ask for a discount?

    • yeah, It's just 18% for electricity! 17% for on time, 1% for direct debit. 12 months contract. although you can cancel contract anytime…

  • +9

Complete rip off, 18% off what ? 20c per kw 100c per kw what is it?

I fail to see how this is a bargain when they hide the actual cost disguising it by saying they will give you x% off hidden price.

    • I agree, but for whatever reason you go with Origin, it's better to get 18% than 16% off… Until we all go offgrid !!

      • +2

No it's better to go with red energy or powershop or some other company that has a better price.

    • x% off their current market offer. It's on their web site.

    • +2

Absolutely. I've come to view all electricity retailers as ****bags basically, they're just out to screw you any way they can by confusing the customer and hiding details away in a manner that is legal but can be viewed as deceptive (or at least that's what I think it is).

Gotta be checking your provider all the time to keep them in line unfortunately.

  • +11

Be very very wary of Origin, we had a terrible overbilling experience with them, it made the discount completely not worth it.

    • +4

And it seems like they charge me per person living the in house rather than actually usage too. 3 person living in an apartment and 2 person workin full time. Best of all one month we all went overseas and the usage for that month is even more than when we were at home.

      • Same here. But im with AGL.. they are all same..

      • +1

If you have a close read, the monthly bill is an estimate, with the actual bill coming in quarterly. They can't afford to send a meter reader in every month, the. Quarterly bill will adjust appropriately and Finalize it so that the amount paid over 3 months whether monthly or quarterly billed

  • Existing Origin customer for gas and they called me yesterday and offered me 15% off usage for paying on time.

Also offered 26% off Electricity usage for paying on time if I switched from my current t provider. Probably won't, my rates are almost as good right now and daily supply charge is 25c/day lower than Origin (SP Ausnet area)

  • Anyone know if you can get the same discount if you have solar?

    • yes, your feed in tariff and credits follow you too

  • +8

When We compare, we should compare at the end of the day, how much you pay, not the discount they give you. Here are my 2 cents:

1, A company offers 32c rate and 12% discount on usage, B company offer 27c, no discount. Math?
2, A company offers 30c and 20% discount on usage, daily supply charge is 89c per day, 3 years contract, $250 break-up fee plus every bill you pay regardless method, $5 admin fee, and other fees may apply if you pay late or credit card etc..
B company offers 28c, no discount, rate locked within contract time, 66c daily supply, no other fees except you dont pay.

3, A company offer you 32c, 14% discount on usage, 68c daily supply charge and 17c meter reading fee every single day.
B company 30c, 8% off on total Bill, usage 68c.

My point is, the tricks these companies played nowadays have reached a whole new level, % discount means nothing, I saw one company even offered 30% off, and their rate was 42c. And always remember, the most of them, the discount is on usage not bill. Other trick is on daily supply charge, compare it as well, 66c to 81c per day over 90 days, $13.5, a 32G SD card now has gone. And meter reading fee… you don't ask to remove, some of them will "assume" you are OK with it. Other things more like how you receive your bill and pay your bill, any extra charges on these… Almost forgot the other one, price hike… look closely, I see some of them offered cheap rate, after 3 months, rates go up, another 9 months, go up again while all others remain the same or rise up once.

All in all, they are all retailers who selling exactly same products, with no baseline pricing, no initiatives to work to your favor. We need to compare and ask.

    All the best.

    • +2

now more confusing then mobile phone plans ever got… when will they pass laws to make it easier to compare prices between the different companies and even plans

    • Agreed.

    • Whats most important is to make clear what State you are in.

      Can't compare state vs state

  • -1

Stay away from Origin. I was with origin for at least 11 years and I didn't get even 1% discount. I signed up with Lumo two months ago and got 22% off electricity and 15% off gas. After that I received two letters from Origin, asking me to switch back and offering me 18% off electricity usage. Pathetic.

    • +2

I'm going to guess that Lumo operates using the same strategy though so keep at them all the time.

  • -2

I have a friend that works for Commander (M2 Telecom), Telstra's largest landline whole-seller. They have just been given the green light for residential power selling and 20% off on power bills - I do not know the rates at the moment. I live in Sydney and he says I can make a good saving, I'm currently with AGL.

If anyone is interested PM me for more info, I will let you know how I go on here if I remember.

    • +1

AGL customer service is non existent

  • +1

Rather than useless comments advising to stay away from Origin, has anyone here tried this in a state other than NSW yet?

    • -1

      I'm from Victoria.

  • +1

Just called and got the 18% off electricity and 14% off gas.

Was going to go with Origin anyway with their website deal of 15/11% so this is perfect timing.

For my area both Origin and AGL use Endeavour Energy as their supplier so both have the same rates.

    • -2

      Ahhhh you're the problem!!!!

What did you get 18% off?

0% off a good rate is better than 1 million % off a crap rate.

      Don't be a sheep.

Of course they have the same supplier- that DOES NOT MEAN the retailers have the same rates.

      • +3

Both AGL and Origin have the same KW/h rates, they even have the same rates between certain usuage steps. I checked.

  • Checked online and does not show for QLD. Has anyone in QLD rung to check?

    • You can be the flag bearer :)

      • I would but just renewed with Origin 14% discount so no urgency for me just now

  • Why doesn't someone check their rates and do a comparison to their competitors before up/down voting? I'd love to but I'm going to bed (newborn)

    • +14

For a newborn your spelling and grammar are fantastic…much better than many members on here. Your mummy and daddy should be proud.

      • You made me laugh.

  • Would also love to know whether this 18% discount is better than my current 15% discount With. dodo based on their actual prices. I would work it out, but I have to go to bed (newborn).

    • wtf is in the infant milk these days!

  • So what is the best deal on rate/discounts for both electricity and gas in Sydney?

Need to chose a company and not sure what to go with.

  • Just called up and they said they cannot find anything above 16% for electricity and 12% for gas on their system. Do I have to mention any plan name to get that discount?

    • Just did mine. I asked the lady to speak with her team leader. She came back with the offer.

      • Yep same. When I asked about the 18% discount she said no way she could do that but she will check with her supervisor. About a minute later she came back and started the process. If they refuse just call back until you get someone different.

        • Same with me, the best they would give me was the 15% discount with 1% on top for direct debit.

Asked them about the 18% off and they said its a "special" discount and wanted to know how I heard about it and they would need to ask for special approval.

After they went off and asked the team lead for approval, they gave it to me.

Definitely try and ring again if they don't approve or offer the 18%, the guy I spoke to was pretty nice.

        • Me too. They had to go check. But there is another offer that may be handy for low usage. $100 credit off gas bill if you transfer both gas and electric 16% off electric, 12% off gas. May be better deal for some.

Edited to correct rates and discount.

  • Do you have to commit to another fixed term (24 months or whatever) to get this deal or is it casual?

    • +1

Just got mine done. No contract. Deal will last for 12 months. You can opt out at any time with no charges.

      • Thanks for the update!

  • I rang up for Queensland, they only had the Daily saver (5%) or Daily saver plus (9% + 1% for direct debit) available for electricity. Anyone had better luck from QLD?

    • +1

From QLD also and managed to squeeze 12% discount (11% + 1% direct debit) which is better than no discount at all.

I was advised the 18% discount is a special rate that applies to NSW customers only.

      Thanks OP!

EDIT: Discount is applied for only 12 months, no contract though.

      • same here.Gold coast.
        On a 50% green + 50% normal and got the 11% + 1% direct debit. Up from 9% +1%.

      • Ok, rang up, got the spiel about the 9%+1%, pushed it a little further and got the 11%+1% :-)

Love OZB right about now :)

        thanks OP

  • Thanks for this post. I would never have known.

  • I've just been speaking to them. They said the maximum discount at the moment is 16%, no 18% available in NSW.

  • +2

Please state what State this is before each state has different tarriffs and discounts.

For NSW there is little difference between the retailers (currently), this is probably the best deal with one of the lowest Tarriffs. The other retailers from what I've read of their deals are awkward ie Monthly prepayment, higher discount but higher tarriffs

Victoria's fully privatised market is probably the most dodgiesst, they get 27% off usage, but they pay 10-30% more in tarriffs, supply charge is 40% more for esaver equivalent

    Edit:
    http://www.originenergy.com.au/962/Energy-price-fact-sheets?g[user_state]=vic#VIC

    Holy cow
    Esaver
    NSW - Endeavor
Domestic Unit Excl GST Inc GST
Consumption of first 19.1781 kWh/Day cents per kWh 22.71 24.981
Remaining consumption kWh/Day cents per kWh 23.37 25.707
Daily Supply Charge cents per day 70.73 77.803
15% off usage on 12mth plan

    Vic - Ausnet
Peak consumption of first 11.1781 kWh/Day cents per kWh 24.81 27.291
Peak consumption - Balance kWh/Day cents per kWh 29.81 32.791
Daily Supply Charge cents per day 118.71 130.581
Dedicated Circuit (Where applicable) cents per kWh 12.44 13.684

Fixed income/pensioners/poor, are so scewed in Victoria…

  • So it works for NSW?

    • having looked at the other state deals, its a NSW deal

  • I am on this 18% Elec & 14% Gas deal with Origin in SA, got my 16/12% bumped up yesterday before seeing this thread today.
But we get robbed blind here in SA with the prices anyway.

Origin Daily Saver Plus - SA (one of the best around) -
Domestic Unit Excl GST Inc GST
Peak consumption of first 10.9589 kWh/Day cents per kWh 31.420 34.5620
Peak consumption - Balance kWh/Day cents per kWh 37.790 41.5690
Daily Supply Charge cents per day 73.790 81.169

Based on my last bill of 1445 KW used over 91 days (inc discounts/ex Solar feed-in $'s) compared to the NSW Esaver rates, I am $120 worse off (ex GST), and $42 worse off than the Vic Ausnet.

So imagine being a "Fixed income/pensioners/poor" person with no solar panels or discounts in SA… they would be struggling big time..

    • +1

Australian version of derregulation… where prices go up instead of down

  • i clicked on the Website deal and on their website it didn't have anything about 18% off?? what's going on?

    • Third line of the OP

      • yeap, I asked and they said in my area, they're only able to offer 15% at the most?? anyways, it seems origin don't automatically give discounts anymore, people have to ask for it.

        • Its been like that for the last couple of years… its why the old and the ignorant are suffering.

Unless you're a heavy usage, its the extra 2% might not match up to the $50 sign on bonus
