  • dan, can i cancel and re sign?

    • It says:
Origin customers, if you already have either an electricity or natural gas account with us, you will get a $50 (incl. GST) credit* when you switch your other fuel (electricity or natural gas) to us for the same supply address by 18 January 2015. We'll put the credit* towards the charges on your bill for your new account.

      • Hmm, the way I'm reading that, you only get $50 credit if you bring a new electricity or natural gas account to them. So if you have both with them already, then no $50 credit. Only benefit of re-signing would be the higher discount rate than their previous standard eSaver a few days ago of 11%

        • Actually, I just renewed my electricity plan with Origin this morning (previous one expired yest but couldn't renew online >.<) and I still qualified for the $50 credit.

The customer service person from their resolutions team (3rd personnel actually after being put on hold for 20 min and then redirected twice!) also renewed my gas plan as well (also with Origin on a separate plan expiring in Jun 2015 but on a lower 7% discount) for no additional cost/exit fees but not sure if that qualified for the $100 credit. $50 is better than nothing I guess.

  • I'm in QLD. It appears they have the same deal for us re: $50 credit.
However they only give 9% QLD vs 15% NSW discount for paying bills on time and in full for 12 months….a bit unfair.

    • you should see VIC… 28%!!!!!!

    • +1

QLD is a risky state for retailers. Wholesale prices are volatile so they can't really give high discounts. This will probably change in a couple of years when QLD government privatise the generators.

VIC wholesale prices are the cheapest (thanks to cheap brown coal) hence the higher retailer discounts in VIC.

p.s. I work in the industry.

      • "This will probably change in a couple of years when QLD government privatise the generators."

It definitely will. We will be paying a lot more when everything is privatized. Privatization = rich people stealing from poor people.

People always tell me how wonderful and efficient private enterprise is, but privatization always results in the customer paying more for less. Anything the private sector can do, the public sector can do better and cheaper. The only thing free enterprise is efficient at, is finding ways to ripoff the decent, common folk. Origin is one of the most despicacle companies operating is Australia.

The main reason power prices have been skyrocketing nationwide the last few years is because private companies have been overbuilding the infrastructure despite declining power demand. The companies get a guaranteed return on any work they do. There was an article about it on the ABC site. Just another example of how capitalists are stealing from the public. Despite what Republicans in the US say, in reality it is the rich who lean on the poor. Too much unregulated capitalism is why Australia has become such a horribly expensive place to live over the past 10 years.

        • I'm not defending privatisation in general. History showed, in NSW and VIC, government's generators were bought by private retailers and this decreased the wholesale prices.

Unfortunately "overbuilding the infrastructure" was mainly done by local government's network (distribution and transmission) companies (eg NSW, QLD). Energy bills skyrocketed, networks got almost 50% of that bill, make huge profits and local governments (as shareholders) received big dividends.

So don't believe when politicians whinge about increased electricity bills. They get most of the money they are the culprits.

    ACT Electricity 16% - Gas 12%
    SA Electricity 16% - Gas 12%
    VIC Electricity 28% - Gas 16%
    QLD Electricity 10% - Gas 6%

But it's important to remember that discounted rates may not make them the best offer, it's best to always check the kWh rates as well as service charges against other offers.

    • It would seem that for ACT at least, the only competitor (ACTewAGL) has identical rates. Including the home saver etc. So the savings are in the extras and discounts and bundles they offer.

    • VIC retailers are the most dodgy when it comes to pricing

  • Looks like the 16% off is on the eSaver plan with Green option - which is another $1 a week minimum.

The Government need to make a law so it is something similar to what banks have, electricity needs a comparative rate. It's getting way too complex to work out the real prices these days. What's next they will go the way of mobile phones? $5000 power for $450 a month charged at $2.8kWh in 10kWh blocks.

    • they already doing this, no body has a set retail price

    Agree with JoelWilliam

If anyone could pass this on to the right people who can make a difference ( if they wanted to)

    Hope thats of some help.

  • Thanks heaps, was looking for new electricity plan as old one is reaching expiry

whats the actual price of electricity they are offering?

they can offer 99% off, it doesnt mean anything unless we know what the prices actually are, from experience origin are normally higher in price before discounts.

  • Origin was offering similar discounts in my area (I live in ACT) about a month ago. I called up my current electricity & gas provider and they matched Origin's offer.

  • Is discount off total price or just usage?

    • Discount off usage only

  • Check the rates here
    http://www.originenergy.com.au/priceguide/?sme=false&ga_vs=h…

There more expensive than other companies

  • I did the math a few weeks ago and worked out the same as I'm paying with me current provider, and if they decide to pull the discount some time in the future I would be a lot worse off.

  • So… the discount is for 12 months.
I can't find any info on contract length though, is it month to month?

  • The rates are not that cheap.
I recently signed up with energy Australia
And they give 27% discount.. But i switched again to momentum energy. 50$ credit to cover the exit fee. And the rates are cheaper.

    I am in Melbourne btw

Great offer! Compared with iSelect and for my usage and suburb (NSW 2015) these Origin rates after discount are the cheapest anyway, plus the $100 after 6 months are free extra money (only $50 available via iSelect by the way), plus no exit fees unlike most other providers! Will switch over from my current AGL freedom plan (low discount, high rates) immediately - thanks OP!

  • +1

Forget the percentage.. it's too prone to marketing lies.. look at the rate in cents per unit instead!

    According to ozb posting guidelines:
    "CHECK competitors prices before posting."
"Is this really the best price on the web? Check for the lowest prices. Is the cost of postage, fees or other costs included?"

  • Expecting shenanigans, I did an energymadeeasy.gov.au comparison and checked it against one I did in September. Surprisingly, the electricity tariff and supply charge (for NSW Ausgrid at least) haven't increased to offset the increased % discount. The gas discount was already 12% and nothing's changed there.

Doesn't look like an existing customer on eSaver can switch to the higher discount online (it lets you switch to different plans, but not eSaver to eSaver), so guess you'd have to call them.

    • Yes you can switch. I was on eSaver plan with 15% discount and last night I signed up with this eSaver plan with 16% discount.

      • Just got off the phone with them re not being able to change online using the 'change plan' button in My Account. Was told to switch via:

        https://www.originenergy.com.au/renewplans

        • I could switch using online account admin under My Accounts, Change Plan button.

        • @nani:
Me too. The Agreement letter included "A $50 (incl. GST) credit on your account after 6 months of energy supply". Did anyone else got this? I thought the $50 credit is only for people switching from another provider.

  • I've been meaning to check the competitiveness of my energy providers! Thanks for the info!

  • I am with origin in Sydney. should I re-signup to get this discount or go to another retailer? which is cheaper? hoping someone who recently done research can just tell me so I save time!

    • +1

I am in the process of moving homes and have done some research around this. I was with Red Energy and will be continuing to do so. Their rates work out to be around 3c/KWh cheaper than Origin anyways plus a lower service to property charge. So even though Red only offers 10% discount on electricity, the overall figure works out to be much lower.

Did the same exercise for gas as well (red doesn't offer gas in NSW). Found AGL to be the cheapest as I was able to negotiate a 12% discount with them.

I'd recommend just going through Red's energy rates (cents/kwh and service to property charge)- http://www.redenergy.com.au/epis/nsw and comparte with Origin's - http://www.originenergy.com.au/files/necf/NSW_Electricity_Re… for your post code.

      • Is your gas with AGL on any contract ? thx

        • +1

Nope. Ask for friends and family offer. Just say you knew someone who worked at AGL. They usually don't ask for more details.

  • Thanks, will check it out.

  • I've been with Origin (VIC) for more than 10 years. Didn't realise they are actually quite expensive. Been doing research for the past week and finally decided to go for Powershop (VIC only). They have great offers and no contract so you are free to leave if you are unhappy too. Already submitted my leave from Origin 2 days ago

    • Have you had a look at momentum energy?

      Is Powershop cheaper comparatively?

      • +1

I've looked at RED Energy, Momentum, and Energy Australia. According to the people at Whirlpool, Powershop is cheaper, especially if you diligently buy their specials every now and then.

Powershop is kinda unique because they have different rates for each season and you can pre-pay some units pre-Summer and pre-Winter to get even cheaper rates.

Besides, I can pay with my Amex card without credit card surcharge, no complain there ;)

        • And get 1/2 point per $. I never pay my bills with amex anymore because of that rule.

        • @Sharp:

Wait, which rule? I thought it's 3 points per $ (Westpac AMEX anyway)

        • EDIT: Realized someone mentioned VIC only

        • @lyon:

Amex issued cards started giving 1/2 point per $ for utility bills last year. Not sure about the bank issued cards.

  • Guys,

Click Energy Platinum [via One Big Switch - but call them if not via the site]

    For Electricity
    17% on usage
    17% on Daily charge
    No lock in period.

Not available to solar [but have 10c FIT net for solar non subs]

The daily usage 17% wipes out this deal for value in NSW particularly.

    K

    • I just had a look at this. I have solar, Control Load 1 and am part of the Endeavour network.

Click Energy are offering "Shine Saver" 15% Pay On Time off Entire Bill after 6c feed-in-tariff solar generation deducted from bill (or "Shine" 7% Pay On Time off bill + 10c feed-in-tariff but that's worse for me). Both give $25 rebate after 1 year.

      Origin Energy charges (excl GST):
      Peak Usage = 22.71c
      Off Peak Usage = 6.73c
Daily Supply Charge Total = 75.47c

      Click Energy charges (excl GST):
      Peak Usage = 23.986c = ~5.62% more than Origin
Off Peak Usage = 6.786c = ~0.83% more than Origin
Daily Supply Charge Total = 78.351c = ~3.8% more than Origin

Given my bill is skewed with the usage cost heavily outweighing the daily supply charge, my bill would be worse off with Click Energy by around $13 a quarter. So after the $25 rebate after 1 year, I would still be worse off by $25 for the year.

But given that Click Energy is relatively new and has all the teething issues, not to mention monthly $100 billing then quarterly reconciliation, I would rather stick with Origin.

So it all depends on your usage profile, meter type, electricity network etc. Use little and Click Energy might be better, use a lot of peak and Origin would be better.

    • unit pricing is around 5% highrt

  • I just signed up to AGL on a 14%/12% 2 yr contract (am in NSW), but having checked out the T's & C's of both, I can see that Origin's electricity rates are cheaper, as is the supply charge. With the extra 2% discount, I reckon I'll save up to about $80 to $100 per year with Origin. Gas fee structure is exactly the same for both. Then there's the bonus $100 credit. Here's hoping I'm still within AGL's cooling off period!

    Thanks OP!

  • couldn't find anything about breaking the contract, ie penalty, anyone know?

    • Origin doesn't have exit fees any more. If you qualify for the $50 or $100 credit by moving your services from another provider to Origin, then you would want to wait at least 6 months, in order to get those credits.

As an update for me, if you don't qualify for those $50 or $100 credit and don't like online billing, you can give them a ring and sign up to the Daily Saver Plus instead, which also has 15% pay on time usage and 1% direct debit billing (for NSW as an example). You can find the Energy Price Fact Sheets online, though you can't change to the Daily Saver Plus online, its something that only the call centres can offer and change for you.

      • Just looked at the Energy Price fact sheet.

Why would you sign up for the daily saver when its 9% then… don't see any other difference.

Other than discount %, there doesnt seem to be any real difference between them all.

        • Daily Saver Plus, not Daily Saver. You're right there isn't too much difference between them all.

          For NSW:
eSaver = online billing, 15% pay on time discount off usage
Daily Saver = 9% guaranteed discount off usage (no need to pay on time to qualify)
Daily Saver Plus = 15% pay on time discount off usage, no need for online billing
Rate Freeze = Price rate freeze for 2 years.
Origin Supply = Standard agreement no special discount.

All above plans have an additional 1% discount for direct debit.

  • Well I have just done the math… about to move and looking at what deals are available (currently on esaver with origin)

A few suppliers beat origin even with the discount (this is will only be relevant for sa)

Here are origins rates compared with competitors (rounded and inc GST)
    First 10kwh - 34.56
    Next 16kwh - 41.57
    Daily - 81.7

    Dodo
    First 10 - 32.45
    Next 16 - 40.81
    Daily - 75.46

    Alinta
    First 3 - 32.66
    Next 7 - 33.89
    Next 16 - 38.91
    Daily - 83.38

Origin offers a 15% discount on esaver while the other two offer 20% discounts and there usage rates are better

and for the record - Dealing with Origin customer support is an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE

  • Hey Guys,

I found this pretty confusing in terms of who can get this deal, I'm an existing customers and have been for over 4 Years but haven't swapped to any other retailer before, I asked on the phone about if I would get it and was told No it only applied to new customers..

I was like I can't see it says that on the website anywhere.. the guy on the phone didn't really seem to care much.. so I wrote a letter in (Email) to there marketing team ;)

I can successfully confirm that almost after 23 days of waiting for a reply I received a phone call informing me they are going to credit my account as a gesture of good will! =)

    Pays to ask!
